  1. If you ever need a re-tube you'll have to take out a mortgage!! I left all tube amps behind decades ago but I do like to have a tube somewhere in my signal chain. I hope it keeps you happy for a little while before you start lusting after something else. LOL
  2. If you do go the pair of 2x10s route stack them on their ends to create a vertical 4x10. They work so much better in that configuration out in the room and you'll be able to hear yourself better on stage.
  3. For myself, I really don't get the fuss over fan noise. Sure I can hear it but after short while I don't even notice it anymore. Fans have a purpose and that is to keep the electronics cool. Without fan cooling the heatsinks would have to be far, far larger adding to the size and weight of the product.
  4. This thread got me to reminiscing about my journey with amplification. #1 - VOX AC50 with its 18" Foundation speaker cabinet. The cabinet was not equipped with handles so I had to add them. The whole set up was very poor so I rebuilt the amp with two channels. it was much better but I wanted more!! LOL #2 - Epiphone Constellation with its matching 15" speaker cabinet. The original driver had blown and was replaced with a Wharfdale 15". Was a good amplifier. #3- Fender Bassman with its 2x12 cabinet. It was horrible. I returned it the next day. They had sold the Epiphone but I left the Bassman anyway. #4 - now needing an amp I owned a Leak TL50 power amp that I paid five quid for. I built a tube pre-amp to drive. it. The amp had that convenient Octal socket for a pre-amp so I used that for power. #5 In Toronto - I used a Sansui 50W per channel stereo receiver. I plugged into the microphone input. I'd set it up at the gig and tuned in some music while we finished set up. #6 - I built a 150W tube amp with parts I brought with me from the UK. #7 - Getting into transistors I built a 200W per channel power amp. It worked first time!! Yea!! I built a solid state pre-amp to drive it and the whole rig was wonderful. I still have all the units that comprised the amp. #8 - Now I use a 2KW capable class D power amp. I designed a tube pre-amp to drive it and it sounds great. Mounted in a four space SKB rack case I can lift it with just two fingers. #9 - Sort of. I bought an Ampeg B15NF with its matching 15" speaker box. It needed some love so I recapped it and put new tubes into it. I fund that the amp was not happy with modern 6L6GCs and I traced the problem to the 270K resistors feeding the bias supply to the output tubes. Reading the RCA tube manual it specified 100K resistors maximum for this service. I installed 100K and the amp was happy. The next problem that arose was flash over in the GZ34 rectifier tube when coming off standby. A fellow bass player on TalkBass @beans-on-toast suggested preceeding the rectifier plates with a silicon diode each. The modification worked and the amp is now happy. As am I and the B15 is my practice amp and will never leave me. LOL Sorry for the long winded post but I just couldn't stop writing.
  5. GK make excellent amplifiers but they are not for everyone. We all have preferences to how we sound. If the GK isn't doing it for you move on.
  6. @Longwheelbass When you have the amp repaired please be so kind as to post the diagnosis so we can add to our knowledge base.
  7. Turn down the bass itself to avoid clipping. Nothing needs to be cranked full on for a recording. You could also just go Direct into a mixer channel.
  8. Time to take the unit to an amp Doctor for a check up.
  9. You have good woodworking skills. Most of us, especially me, don't! LOL 😁😁
  10. The OP could try mine or even plug into my B15NF at any time but I think the commute would be time consuming!
  11. In my mind the thing you need to look at is the efficiency of the installed drivers. With only 100W of power available efficiency is a vital consideration.
  12. Just as a bit of levity in a somewhat contentious thread; Does this mean you are a Robot?? LOL
  13. Y'know Bill the way you help out other players with your sage advice is appreciated. Thanks man!!
  14. Beware!! A Zombie has arisen!! LOL
  15. You're not looking for the normal glow of the heaters but a faint blue glow within the output tubes themselves. It indicates that current is flowing normally. Do you get any hum out of the speakers?
  16. There is nothing like the feeling when you take an old relic and give it a new life. Way to go Bro!
  17. I have never had the pleasure of using a Barefaced product. I do use a pair of Acme Sound B2 three way 2x10 cabinets which I stack on their ends for vertical 4x10. I would never try to gig with just one though I'm sure one would do fine. The vertical arrangement brings my sound up closer to my ears and improves dispersion in the room. I also feel that there is safety in numbers and not having to push the cabs. Barefaced use more modern drivers so I imagine that a 2x10 would handle most gigs you might play. I'd still stand it on its ends so that the drivers a vertically aligned for the above reasons.
  18. I am a trained lead singer as well as a bass player. When I attended a jam I would sing a couple of blues songs as well as play. A fond memory I have is on one trip back 'ome to Liverpool, the youngest of the brothers had arranged with the band at the local for me to sit in with them. I'm sitting there sipping my pint when I heard my name called from the stage. I went up and the bass played handed me his bass. I was feeling somewhat bemused but I sang a couple of SRV tunes and every one loved what I did! it was a magic moment for me as none of our brothers had actually heard me play before.
  19. Nothing made is more important than the health of a treasured pet. I hope your girl recovers swiftly and with no issues. We miss all of the many dogs we've owned. Usually we've had two at a time. The last pair were a Shepard/Husky cross called Bailey and a Chihuahua named Tia. We brought Tia home in a basket covered with towels to keep the tiny puppy warm. Bailey always liked to check every bag we ever brought home. Her tail would wag and her nose would disappear into each new item. We put the basket down and told Bailey that this one was for her. She knew something alive was under the towels and she ever so gently moved the towels until she found Tia. The look of joy on her face was a picture. She took that little dog as her own and cared for her and taught her the rules of the house as Tia grew up. When I picked a chicken carcass at the sink there was a dog sitting each side of me with their 'can I eat that?' expressions and their two tails wagging. As I pulled a bit of leash I offered it to them. Bailey would just sit there and eat it. Tia would rise up with one leg against mine as she got her titbit. Instantly after she plonked herself down into the sitting position again. We call this "Two tails wagging" a very fond memory.
  20. Hello @Longwheelbass are you there?? I'm trying to help you here!
  21. I would eMail Phil and see what he suggests. It could be simply a bad power switch or some protection kicking in. For interest how is the speaker connected to the amp?
  22. Ampeg B15N is one of the best studio bass amps ever made.
  23. I have yet to go to an open jam that didn't have a bass amp. Mind you I have lived in the Toronto area for the last forty years. Perhaps the UK is ahead of we yokels.
