Took delivery of the PF-50T and connected it to my Super Twin, then plugged in my '73 P and played along with a classic soul compilation.
Oh. My. God.
Punchy, fat, touch-responsive sound. Smooth and effective tone controls, including a Treble control that actually has a useful effect with flat-wound strings. The Gain knob should actually be labelled 'Fur', as that's what it seems to control (in the best possible way).
This amp is all that I hoped it would be - and no hum, I'm pleased to say.
Here's the rig, and the settings I ended up with:
You turn the bass down?! What kind of maverick renegade are you?!- 1

I still can't get much in the way of change in tone with the gain turned up though - no noticeable change in tone regardless of the level of gain, just makes it louder.
I thought that at first but when I took it to rehearsal after about 20 minutes of play, it really started to growl. Maybe it just needs a little more time to warm up?

Ha HA! It's mine now! Great meeting you yesterday!😃😃😃
Haha, how did we not figure this out sooner?! =D
Glad it's gone to a good home, hope you didn't get in trouble with the wife! -
I tried my PF20T at rehearsal the other night. Used the cab from the rehearsal room (some Hartke 15" I believe). Was almost maxed out, Gain at about 1 or 2 o'clock, bass at about 4 and volume around 3 to be heard against kit, keys, 2 guitars, trombone, trumpet and vocals. With the gain there, had to play gingerly to stop it going from a purr to a growl but it held its own against all that. I'd have no qualms gigging it with PA support at a larger gig or by itself with a smaller band. The difference with a second cab when playing at home is pretty huge too so if I could be bothered to take 2 cabs, would be fine for most regular gigs.

£750 anyone? I'm actually quite surprised this isn't getting snapped up...

Price drop to £800 ono

Yeah man, thing's complete, never actually put it on the bass I got it for, which I no longer have.

Offers considered as it has to go asap but no trades, thanks. I'm already losing money here so someone please buy it soon so I can pay my road tax and car insurance =S
You probably know how rare these are. Head is handmade in Essex. 30 watts, all tube.
I bought this on a whim after finally entering the world of tube amps. A very expensive whim. It has to be said, this is the only Ashdown amp that's ever sounded good to my ears. But not just good good; the kind of good that has you cackling gleefully after playing for about 5 seconds. Maybe it's just battered old rehearsal room gear that hadn't sold me on them but this is a beast. Was hoping to keep it but as life has a habit of kicking you in the penis when you're smiling, I've got to let it go.
Only had it a few months, left the house once. It's basically brand new. You are of course welcome to come try it as it won't be posted unless you want to arrange all that and take the risk.
That said, I'm willing to deliver within a reasonable distance. If it's more than a 20 minute drive, we can discuss. I'm in Walton -on-Thames.

Still got this??
Yep, still kicking about

Do it! I love my pf20 and that's plenty loud with 2 cabs. Would've gone for the 50 but already got the pf500.

Aargh, I notice Kenny's is showing the PF50t as still available, and I might be close to caving in!
I have a new band lined up who are retro-minded and not crazy loud, so I'm kind of tempted. My old Dynacord would do the job, but this is lighter and has useful stuff like midrange EQ and DI outs that would make it more useful for gigging...
Do it!

Was Motown a genre or a record company.? Im sure it was the latter, but I'm open to be educated
Given that it was a record label, I'd be willing to put money on saying it was/still is a record label.

But Motown's a record label that put out
loads ofsome, if not most of the most widely recognised Soul music regardless of whichever exceedingly specific boxes people like to use...
You know what, to paraphrase you, horses for courses. I'm gonna leave it there. -

Is Motown soul? I’d argue no, it’s pop; it doesn’t have the earthiness of soul.
Uhh...
Just... wait, it's gonna take me a long time to get my head around this one... -
I feel like I'm poking the bear here but what then do you make of James Brown as the 'Godfather of Soul'? He was known more for his funk years than his crooning early days but still gets the title. For me, it's always been Otis. Otis, via Michael Jackson, got me into music in general. Natural progressions and that led me to where I am now but seems a bit like taking a dump on a recently deceased indisputable legend for the sake of opinion. It's a meaningless title really, a sales pitch, but she is quite easily one of the most influential artists of all time and if musical monarchy is decided by the people, she's easily the queen. Never mind that she was making music a decade before Anita (not to discredit here, I consciously know but one of her songs). Almost akin to calling Charles Bradley or Sharon Jones the king/queen of soul when they passed. Charles Bradley is the only artist that I've literally cried (emooooooo) every time I've seen him, live or on video ffs. That makes him the king of my soul but what does that mean to anyone else? About as much as the rest of this rambling message, probably.

Just want to say, Paul is a great teacher. He taught me at ACM many moons ago and I've returned for private lessons to fill the gaps in my knowledge.
I point vaguely in the direction of what I want to improve, he has it all laid out on a plate waiting for me. I digress with something vaguely related, he ties it all back up. Couldn't recommend him enough.- 2

My 20 through the pf210he and a pf115lf sounds mammoth in my bedroom... reckon it would more than hold its own in a rehearsal at least so don't see why the 50 wouldn't work for smaller gigs with no pa support.

Ace. What’s the ETA on this? Very interested!
They say 7-10 days normally but previously they've come within the week.

Stoked for you, man. Glad they came through and you got it sorted.
Swan were really decent too, I did them a sketch with all the dimensions and they've now got them on the site to order. Nice enough to give me a discount for the sketch too! Link here for anyone interested.

For such an unusual shaped amp I would have thought they would provide a decent case for it. Id prefer the PF50t if it came in a traditional 'box' case. I wonder could one be retro fitted around it? It looks a little vulnerable.
As far as I'm aware, no official case exists. I guess they assume yo'll be buying the PF115HE? Found a pic that doesn't have the central strut the 210HE has so that probably answers my earlier question.
Castle cases do what I assume you mean by a box case https://www.castlecases.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=183_26_76&product_id=1901
Cage is pretty sturdy on the head and I imagine case manufacturers would have some decent hard foam shaped around the protruding bits to keep it snug (any Swan cases I've had have done a pretty decent job of that kind of thing).
Swan have asked for the exact dimensions because of its weird shape so it seems they're taking that into account. -
Just an FYI for anyone considering the PF 20/50T: if you have a fliptop cab (specifically the 210HE at least), the head won't fit inside the cab so you'l need a case for it (got a quote from Swan for about £106). I don't know if they changed this with the newer cabs? Would've thought that given it's modelled on the B15 they would have made it so the tube head can fit inside the cab 🤷♂️
Maybe it's different with the 115?
Also, annoyingly, the PF20T won't sit atop the 210HE because of the handle... so it's either flip the lid and put PF20 on PF500 or just use the 115.
Or actually... if you have a detachable lid case, flip that and put head on top of that. That should work, I hope. -

Power Amp into Ampeg SCR-DI...? Or small Class D head?
in Amps and Cabs
Posted · Edited by Misowaki
So I've just ordered myself a Barefaced One 10 and am thinking of either downgrading my PF500 to get something like a TC BH250 or Markbass Nano Mark or something but then thought... would a little power amp work from my SCR-DI? Anyone know if this is possible/a practical way of getting a little amp head in a bag without spending another £200-300?
I normally take a Spectracomp, Polytune and the SCR-DI to a gig so a little power amp would do the trick if it's doable but then so would a BH250 with toneprint and tuner built in and leave the other bits at home...
I know I could just chuck the PF500 in a bag/double bass case and be done but I like the idea of something smaller. I have a PF20T too which I'm sure will sound phenomenal through the One 10 but in case I don't fancy driving to a gig, wanna be able to basically have everything in one bag and the cab in my hand.
Anyone got anything to say about either head or the power amp thing? Either of them any good?
Cheers
