  1. Another 'also a drummer' here =D

My first instrument was bass.  About 10 years back I joined a 3 piece on bass as they'd never had a bassist.  The drummer eventually got ousted.  He'd been playing a decade but only played the most basic stuff and reckoned himself the tits.  I jumped on kit as I was better and not even actually a drummer at this point.  But not that there's anything wrong with basic stuff but if you're keeping it that straight, you have to be Phil Rudd, really.

He got turfed because of his timing and general angriness.  Eventually, I got turfed and they reformed under a different lineup with old boy back on kit.  Still angry, still sucky.
I got turfed because I had ideas and didn't just want to do what I was told! =D

I only really came back to bass properly a few years back but in time away from bass, I learned so much about the way the two work together.

What makes a good drummer?  A good bassist, and vice versa.  But other than that, I'd say it's the qualities you want in your mates or a partner:

    - Empathy (matches the energy of the song)
    - Good listener (plays accordingly, for the song)
    - Good humour (has fun with it and fun to be around)
    - Reliable (timing and won't back out of a gig last minute)
    - Understanding (they don't have to be a musical genius and neither do you, you just need to understand what you're doing and aiming for)

    That's my 2 pence.

you need some suitably bendy veneer (some types bend better than others) just pm me your address and I'll send you a few strips in the post.

That's really kind of you, thank you.

What I've attempted (a fix that has worked for many things previously) is to make a paste from wood glue and pencil shavings. Put some in and tried hammering back in but it wont sit right and doesn't seem to want to go all the way in. That or the hole is getting bigger which is making me scared of giving it any welly with an actual hammer over a pedal beater... eesh.

  3. Oooh, I'm not a happy bunny. After reacquiring a JC bass (foolishly sold the last because of an old band),  it appears I've been sold a dud.

Some numbnuts with no clue about how to set up a 3 point had the back 2 posts higher than the front and it's pulled the back posts out, mainly G side.  I've tried to hammer them back in with a hard felt kick pedal beater but they won't stay and I'm pretty gypsy's kissed. They've clearly messed with it as the screw slots are shredded too.

Any suggestions on a good fix that won't screw it up or make it worse?

I did wonder why the dude had put a bunch of nuts on the ball ends with no real reason or rhyme. Seems it was an attempt to counteract the pull as opposed to lengthening to increase tension.

  4. Ah right, I forgot about the wood assembly and treatment.  It still seems quite a jump up in price for what essentially doesn't make a discernible difference to the regular ear.  I mean, yeah I'd bloody love a 10 or 2025, obvs but a few mods to the 425 get me close enough.  I'm not sure I really 'believe' in 'tonewoods' anyway =P

I'm sure the construction makes a difference to tone and sustain but for someone who often palm mutes or whacks a sponge under the strings (such as myself) I think the 425 will do.  Although the B never quuiiiiite intonates correctly (12th fret reads about a quarter tone sharp) and that's a bit of a gypsy's kisser (especially as it now sports a Gotoh bridge), it does the job and does it mighty well.

Anyone else modded their BB in any way?

Bridge, pickups, string tree are the main differences then some of the earlier 1024/5's had lacquer on the necks.

They're great basses & I think Yamaha have lost some of the essence with the new models.

String tree is nominal, bridge already replaced, pups it be interested in trying others but seem to be fine now that I've A/Bd them with the Fenders. I could lacquer the neck myself if it bothered me I guess but I usually take a bit of fine sandpaper to my necks anyway. As before, 425 is a monster. Beyond pleased with it.
