Blackstar HT-1R or HT-5R would be my choice. Brilliant little amps, and can put out a fair amount of noise if you ever wanted them to.

[/quote]Guitarist chum of mine just got the 5R, he's very pleased. Fender Super Champ X2 is worth a look too.

If Discreet offers you sweets, politely decline and walk away from him backwards. Welcome to the forum!

    He's not wrong though ;)

As to twin 'buckered basses for around £400, Ibanez SRX530 http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/eb_page13.php?area_id=3&data_id=256&color=CL01&year=2013&cat_id=2&series_id=115

I remember many years ago I was looking at my first 5 string purchase but didn't know which way to go. There was a big, live, open air gig on the tv with lots of big names (I can't remember the event) but the all the bass players whose tone really stood out were playing Ray 5s, this decided my first 5 string buy and I wasn't disappointed; wish I'd've kept it, but then hindsight is a marvellous thing and GAS is a mean old S.O.B.

  4. More comfortable (for some); prettier finishes; oiled necks. Electronics are subjective, I think, as many prefer the tone of the SUB. I bought mine when they first came out and still have it (paint stripped off the neck now as it became sticky when it got shiny) but I had a 'full on' 'Ray which has since moved on; there is a certain something about the original SUB that, for me, makes it a keeper.

  5. Mrs Ez and I have wound down what we buy each other at Christmas and this year we're not buying anything for each other. I could be miserable and say that Santa is probably bringing me shredded nerves this year as we're spending it with the in laws and their kids (I work in a primary school and could do with a break from children frankly) but that would very Scrooge like (even though I've managed to it do anyway ;) ). I did receive a pressie from my daughter and a quick feel revealed that it was a framed picture; I've been on at her that this is all we ever really want as we don't see her very often. So as we're away I opened it and I'm so glad I did......
