I listened to Pino on Gary Numan's, I Assassin, because I'm a massive Pino fan. Prior to this album, Numan had used Mick Karn. On I Assassin, Pino sounds very much like Mick. As that album was pre Pino's more widespread notoriety via Paul Young's No Parlez, I wonder if Mick was an influence on the blossoming Pino?

I think so, even though it's missing the preamp (easily sorted with some eq if you really want that full on zing).

Well, it turns out it wasn't any of the possible issues suggested, and turned out to be very easy to fix. Seems like the spring in my pick holder may not have been seated properly, because touching the casing made the buzz go away. I fenagled the picks within it a bit and then tried playing the open A again and problem solved!

 

Thanks everyone who chipped in. Atw least I have knowledge for in the future in case it's not a cheapo gadget causing me grief!

Yes. I shielded my JMJ Mustang from the pickup rout, through to the control cavity (making sure it connects with the metal control plate) and it is noticeably quieter.

Yes, PJB stuff isn’t as cheap as some sadly. I’ve never seen anyone else using them live at gigs I’ve been to, although Pino (with PSP) and Kyle Eastwood are among their most prominent list of users.

The problem isn’t always the speaker either, but the cabinet it’s house in. I know it’s not always practical, or even possible, but trying out combos beforehand, preferably side by side, is the best way forward. FWIW I use Phil Jones rigs for both EB and EUB, which feature multiple 5” speakers (as alluded to by @Beedster above) and, IMO, sound great.
