1.
Hi, My name is Tim; I am a representative for www.GuitarSend.com. We are a legitimate company and we have sent steinbergers to almost every part of the world since our inception. I would be happy to assist you with any questions you have about Steinbergers: both new or used, thank you. Unfortunately our prices are higher on new Steinberger models; this is due to the fact that we pay a very high price for these guitars (only slightly less than what a regular US citizen pays for one) Our pricing on classic pre-gibson 'bergers is generic worldwide however, and I invite you to peruse our website or contact me directly for more info. Tim www.GuitarSend.com
Hello Tim, welcome to the forum. Did you get my email? Cheers, Jake M
  2.
There's no way that i'd ever buy one, What's the chance of a faulty system detuning you mid song? It's a lot of cash to save you about 15 seconds work every week or so. I think the problem is that it dosen't appear to be aimed at musicians (maybe this is what the OP meant by insulting)
Yes indeed, that's what i meant.
  3. I've just seen Gibson's "robot" guitars: http://www.gibson.com/robotguitar/ Frankly i find them quite insulting and offensive. What a load of nonsense. Cheers, Jake M
  4. It's almost impossible to get hold of a new Steinberger in the UK it seems. I found this site: http://www.guitarsend.com/ Looks suspect to me and price's are rather inflated. Does anyone know if it's legit? Cheers, Jake M
  5. Similarly, this Rick 4000: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/70s-RICKENBACKER-400...%3A1|240%3A1318 I own one of these myself. Hardly any original parts left on this one. Been listed for months now, can't think why it's not selling. Cheers, Jake M
  6.
Anyone got one? I'm tempted to get a fretless for noodling..... OK or pants?
I just bought one of these: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=31715 Sounds and plays great. Cheers, Jake M
  7.
I have to admit I was interested in getting one of those, however your photos are the first decent ones I've seen and I'm really not impressed by the (lack of) bridge.
I agree about the bridge. I didn't realise how "basic" it actually is until i saw it. It's a steel plate screwed to the end that allows for up and down movement for string height, but there's no way of adjusting backward and forward for intonation. I spoke to Patrick at Play Away, and he said that it'll be a case of making something wedge shaped and pushing it in behind the plate. Probably be easier just to fit a bridge somehow. Only time will tell if it becomes a problem or not, but for now it's fine. Maybe i'll modify it somehow when/if it becomes necessary. Cheers, Jake M
  8.
Pardon me for asking, but i was just wondering how that's much more portable than a normal bass? I'm assuming that it's a 34" scale so it's pretty much the same length as a normal bass and with the bits that stick out it's almost as wide, just a bit lighter... And those aria ones on the same website, in what way are they portable? They're the same size as a normal bass (if not bigger) it's just going to be a bit lighter. I'm not criticising you at all, i've just never understood what makes these basses so portable. I understand the steinberger, but not these... I have no problems carrying any of my basses around with me.
You're right, it's not that much shorter than a normal bass, but it's SO much lighter, and in it's gig bag it's literally just like a big stick. I don't drive, and i'm just too long in the tooth these days to be humping heavy gear around on the bus, bearing in mind that the bass itself isn't the only thing that i need to carry. Also, i usually play Fender/Rick, and call me paranoid, but the streets and buses where i live just ain't safe these days to be carrying expensive gear around, especially with rather obvious logos on big cases that attract attention. I honestly didn't think this "contraption" would sound as good as it does, but i thought i'd take a chance and buy it anyway, and i'm genuinelly chuffed, especially at the price. Cheers, Jake M
  9. The bass in the pic below is a Basstar, if you're wondering. Just got this yesterday, purely for its portability. I wasn't necessarily expecting much when i ordered it, but thought i couldn't go wrong at £150. Been looking for a resonably priced Steinberger, bit little chance in the UK. Well, i have to say i'm pleasantly surprised. No lack of sustain here, in fact quite the reverse. Of course, the sound lacks some body, but not as much as you'd expect. It has a very powerful pickup which sounds quite Rickenbackery. It's quite crudely made, which is more for functionality than cheapness IMO. I think the philosophy must be that someone buying a guitar just for it's portability won't be wanting anything too expensive, because the focus is on sound and playability, and there's no real compromise there. It came with a low action, nice to play without setting up. The bridge moves up and down, but has no way of adjusting the intonation. I'm told you need to "wedge something in". Anyway, no need at the moment, it's fine. Needs a decent set of strings on it though, the set it came with are quite nasty. I'm wondering if standard length will be long enough, because they wrap around the end. All in all, my initial opinion is that it does exactly what it claims to do and does it well. Recommended. Available from a very nice man called Patrick: http://playawayguitars.co.uk/ Cheers, Jake M
  10. I own an old mid 70's Hiwatt myself. You won't find them for sale anywhere. Last one i saw on eBay went for over £2000 to a guy in America. For that reason i put out a feeler recently. The general consensus was £600-£800, but of course the guy who paid £2000 would beg to differ. There's some useful info and a mesage board here: http://www.vintagehiwattconvention.com/ Cheers, Jake M

    Distortion advice
I want to attain that rasping distorted sound that JE got from his setup in the 90's for when we do our Who songs in our set. I think he used a Digitech Guitar 2150 processor (the purple rack one), but think thats too over the top for me. Could someone recommend a floor pedal that would come close? Ive tried some distortion pedals and they seem to fair better than overdrive pedals. Would a guitar distortion pedal be better than a bass one? I only want to distort the upper frequencies. Any advice tips would be great. My existing set up is in my sig. Thanks
I'm thinking of earlier Entwistle now, but personally i don't think a sound like that can be acheived through "signal processing". Just an old Hiwatt, a Precision or Rickenbacker and sheer volume in my case. Nothing else needed in the chain. Go old school. Sorry, just realised you were thinking of his later sounds. No help here then. Cheers, Jake M

  15.
A decent P Pup? My abbreviation knowlege needs some work! What's that? Thanks to all the above. Nice to know what he used. I have also seen them a couple of times - in 1997, with the Hanley/Burns rhythm section (as I'm also a drummer, it was my dream night!), and in 2002, which I think was filmed. TBH, the '97 gig was the best. Better group, and more chaotic! It was just months before he sacked all the band, and the gig was looking dubious from the off. The band played the opening riff of 'Masquerade' for about 10 mins before Smith arrived, considerably refreshed. They proceeded to play the loudest gig I've ever attended - including Motorhead! I've not bought the last few LP's - I really should - but I found post '98 that the guys he was working with really lacked any identity or 'groove', like the old Hanley rhythm section. But I do hear that the new LP is a corker!
P is for precision bass, pup is for pickup!
  16.
Could the sound city cab (and unidentified amp) be for the keyboard? Then the other amp in the picture - HH (possibly VS Bassamp) would be for bass? I used a HH VS throughout the late '70s and into the mid '80s, a very fine piece of gear indeed that lreally made my Ripper growl.
Knowing The Fall they're probably all playing through the wrong amps on purpose anyway.
  17.
Another Fall fan here-I've seen them a couple of times, last time was in 1994 in Penzance. Bloody superb stuff-if you want to elicit howls of outrage from your average listener-in-the street, put some Fall on. When they were on Jools a few years ago, after Hanley had left, their bass player had a very tasteful black/black/maple Precision not unlike my own.
Saw them last March at Bilston Robin. Never saw them back in the day, and loved every minute. New albums pretty good, especially Fifty Year Old Man, which is as good as anything they've ever done IMO. I read Renegade by MES recently. Didn't really spill the beans as i'd hoped, although very funny. The Fallen by Dave Simpson looks more promising. Cheers, Jake M
  18.
I've been a big Fall fan for years, and have always totally loved the bass sound and style created by Mr. Steve Hanley when he was a mainstay in the band. Question is, I know he played a Precision througout his time with them, but does anyone know any more about it? What was that colour called - it was kind of yellowey, with (I think) a black scratchplate. I'd love one the same! I'm no Fender expert - I'm a Rickenbacker fan through and through (I'm sure I saw a video clip with him playing one of these as well once?) - but the sound he manages is/was totally fab. Any idea how he got it?
Nice to hear from another Fall fan. Here'a a picture of Steve and his gear taken in 1983. Sound City speakers, but as for that head? Cheers, Jake M

  20.
The M series is the more conventional 'guitar' shaped Steinberger as designed by Roger Giffin (some say in association with Mike Rutherford)? Often referred to as an XM2/A If so then I was offered a red with white binding one (my fave colour for these) for under $1,000 a couple of months ago. Did some haggling around the $800 mark but didn't get anywhere in the end. Probably a decent marker for US prices would be $1,000 for one in really good condition with dealers asking more like $1,200. Hope that helps
Yes, thats the M series, and it helps. Cheers.
  21.
hmmmm! what you got in mind?
What, you mean you've got one up for grabs yourself?
  22. How much should i pay for a Steinberger M series bass approx? Early 90's, good cond. Sorry, no more info at the moment. Could do with some help on this asap, because the guy's waiting for an offer as i type! Cheers, Jake M
