1. OK - so I've no gigs to practice for, and I struggled to keep motivated! So, I have had a go at a couple of classical pieces in the past - which kept me out of trouble. Anyway, I had a kind of bonkers idea, which was to record a classical orchestral piece playing all of the parts on bass (like you do!). I plumped for The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, as I kind of knew the Cello part from when I was in a school orchestra. I eventually found a score to download, and spent quite some time learning and working it out. Sometimes I had to change octaves, so there weren't too many bass guitars playing in the same range. There are 7 basses playing. Violin (which I did 2 basses for the 1st Violin and one for 2nd), Viola, Cello and two oboe parts. I used Fender Jazz for the strings and a precision for the oboes. Anyway - enough of that here it is. I did struggle with some of the parts, so go easy!!
2. Thanks for this! Just installing it now. Nice one!
3. Thanks Lozz196 and Beedster - really appreciate the advice. www.Deeperpurple.band if you want to see the mesa rig in action - on the live vids, lockdown vids are just DI'd from a Sansamp! Cheers!
4. "A lot of it depends on what sound Phil is going for, because the 400+ is a pretty versatile beast?" Beedster- most of my gigs with the Mesa are with a Deep Purple tribute - it's loud, the guitarist likes to be able to hear what I'm playing - and I play Fenders with a pick! There are monitors at our gigs (normally house PAs), but there sometimes isn't enough juice in those to be pumping the bass guitar through them - and the vocalist gets priority! I just love the way the Mesa cuts through the noise - and I like the height of the rig, so that if things get really hairy, I can retreat to my stack and hear what the hell is going on!! It's just the logistics of dragging the mesa plus two big cabs around that can be an issue. We have gigs booked (although I have no idea if they will go ahead) for next summer including a trip to Ireland. I want to be kind to the band, and if possible reduce the weight!
5. Thanks - will take a look at them. Don't really know much about Ashdown apart from the Geezer Butler connection!
6. Thank you Beedster.... not that often on this forum - so appreciate the advice about target audience! It's kind of what I thought - they are going to be a bugger to replicate. I think at least I should put the head in a lighter case. At the moment it is in its "road ready" wooden box, and then flightcased....sometimes you just have to stare at the thing for a while, to summon the will to lift! Cheers
7. I've got a mesa 400+ along with road ready cabs - 2x10 and 1x18. On the last tour that band were getting a bit fed up with lumping it up stairs, into lifts etc. I have a mark bass 800w thing that has a little valve in it and matching Mark Bass 2x12 cab - but I find it really way too clean and I don't like it. I also like having my mesa stack, which is nice and tall! Any ideas as to what could replace the mesa gear with something a bit more portable, and yet without the "hifi" sound of the Mark Bass rig? I've looked at the TC 2x10s and maybe one of their amps.... and also at the lightweight Mesa gear - but the price on those cabs seems a little ridiculous. Happy to hear any recommendations. The amp doesn't have to be 2 kg, but I would rather it wasn't the 47kg of my flightcased 400+!!
8. Well spotted again! We have a new keys man (featured in the Tokyo vid) - Paul Morris, who has been known to share a stage with Mr Blackmore in the past! Cheers!
9. Ahem, shorts!! - yes the drums and bass were done at the end of this summer, and the guitarist lives in Spain, so he always seems to have great weather. It took a while for the other chaps to do their vids, so we only released this a couple of weeks back..... Regards the juke box - our manager fancied a cameo, and he has this in his living room - so that was an easy option, and a bit of fun! Cheers Paul
10. Hey Paul - we have a video of us doing that live! It's a long one, but I think we did manage to get stems from the mixing desks - so please enjoy! The vocals are pretty damned good!!
11. Hi All Deeper Purple have done a few "lockdown" videos - as our gigs for this year have been cancelled, and only myself and the drummer now live in the UK. Anyway, the latest is Woman From Tokyo - which I dragged my PC to a rehearsal space, and recorded drums and bass (whilst filming) directly onto Cubase (using a Behringher USB mixer). The bass was DI'd directly from my Sansamp Bass Driver DI. Next were guitars which were sent to me as WAV files from Spain - and then Vocals from Greece and Keys from USA. Check it out - we hope to record a few more of these in the coming months. Video was mostly mobile phone footage, and a go pro over the drum kit. I put the video together using PowerDirector. Seemed to work pretty well. Let me know what you think.....or have any questions.....
12. Ah - I found the page at last! Just wanted to let people know - I bought a Fender Custom Shop Pro from Mick. Real nice gent - left me to noodle on the bass for a good hour. No pressure, and allowed me to play some of his other wonderful basses so that I could compare them with the Custom Shop Pro. Really nice guy - definitely buy with confidence. Cheers Mick. The bass has been in action with Deeper Purple! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3H7Ve6djAU Sorry this feedback took so bloomin' long! Phil
13.
The problem is that the cabinet was tuned with the EV in mind. You may find it hard to replace the EV but it can probably be repaired. Try http://www.audioloud.../boultons.shtml they quote £70 for an EV 18 repair. Alternatively Wembley Loudspeakers http://wembleyloudspeaker.com/
Update - I emailed both companies. Wembley Loud speakers never replied! The guys in Norwich did, and turned my speaker around in a week (£80 plus £15P&P). The speaker has just been through 3 two hour sets with Deeper Purple, and is as good as new! Thanks for the advice.
14. Wow - thanks for that technical explanation. I think I will try and avoid the bi-amping option, just due to logistics etc. but very interesting explanation thank you.
15. Hey Chienmortbb - the speaker has been packaged off to audioloudspeakers today. They have quoted £80 plus £15 return postage. I will let you know how it goes! Cheers.
16. I have also gone the H9 route! Great as an octave, chorus, phaser etc, plus lots of weird and wonderful harmoniser effects for general messing about with! These pedals are all powered by the Cioks DC5 - which fits neatly under the pedaltrain metro 16 board. I did try a cheapo power supply, which hummed and went back. I also didn't want a power supply that needed its own transformer! 17. The is now on ebay (but would rather sell it to someone on here!) (bump!) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USA-Spector-Handmade-NS2-Bass-Guitar-Immaculate-/132121936813?hash=item1ec314c3ad:g:SYUAAOSwuxFYwtHU
18. Just in case anyone else is interested, I have just purchased an SKB flight case from an army surplus guy on ebay - originally designed for guns! I will put new foam in! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141975912641?ul_noapp=true This is basically the same top notch, waterproof and very strong case that sells for about £280 - and the same dimensions as their bass guitar version...... I will let you know how it goes!
19. That's great advice - thank you. I had already emailed Wembley loudspeaker - but will try the other co. as well. For £70 it would be worth a punt!
20. Hello people I have a bit of a monster rig, which I dragged out last night for an impending mini tour with Deeper Purple. The rig is Mesa Boogie - Bass 400+, along with the old diesel cabs - 2x10 with horn, and 1x18. The problem is, about 2 years ago, the original EV 18" speaker started rattling very badly (a very unpleasant metallic distortion). In my hurry to get a replacement, I bought an Eminance Definimax 4018 LF. I always suspected that this was not a patch on the original speaker - and last night in a rehearsal room, it really noticed. The 2x10 completely over-powers the 1x18 - you have to bend down to appreciated it is acctually working, and the resultant sound mix of the two cabs is very toppy. So, does anyone have a suggestion as to an appropriate replacement? Should I try and get the original speaker repaired even??? (although I did hear that re-coning etc, can be problematice)..... I think the EV was 8ohm 400w. Ideally I would like to get something that would make the same noise as the old rig used to! Help!! Thanks.....
21. Thanks for the info and the pics! I have been in touch with Alex and I am now pondering..... Cheers.
22. Hi there. Maybe a daft question, but what is the height if you "stack" them, and what is the width of the top cab?? Also, the impedance of each cab - I'm not familiar with them, being all old fashioned and used to lugging around 10 ton cabs! Cheers. Phil
23. Hello people. I have a gig in Spain this summer (Deeper Purple - playing at Estopona bull ring - along with a Floyd and Zep tribute). Normally when I fly to Spain with my bass, I fly with Easy Jet, as they have always allowed my bass, in a soft gig bag, as hand baggage - with no extra costs incurred. Well, this time, as the promoter was buying a lot of flights, he ended up booking Ryan Air - and the bass will have to go in the hold .... So, I am after a case for my bass that is good for baggage handlers.... I do have an old very heavy duty flight case that came with the bass (a 77 Precision) - but it weighs a tonne with a very uncomfortable leather handle!! Are there any "plastic" type alternatives, like Peli cases make for camera gear etc..... preferably about £150 tops........ Advice would be welcome. Many thanks.
24. My original photos came out a bit small - so I have taken a few more today with my mobile phone (!!)....and started a flikr account thing - so let's see how this works - https://www.flickr.c...3/shares/Q6kVrp Can someone confirm whether they can actually see any photos please! Thanks
