Thanks for sorting that out for me AT So the Spiders are £9 odds for delivery and if it comes in at less than 755mm wide I'm on a winner. That's all the space I've got left. It should do the Rockstand's 735mm.
I tried adding two of them to my basket, to see what would happen to the delivery price. It simply doubled. It looks as if the low purchase price is being made up a bit by charging quite a lot for delivery. I considered PM'ing KevB to see what part of the East Mids he's in and what he wants for his stand, but I really need a stand to hold five or seven basses & guitars.
I found this firm about an hour back. Looks very similar to the Stagg and they got them on offer. I emailed them about postage and widths so I'll update with them soon as I know but have a look at these. https://secure2.spid...tar-stands-9458
The spider 7 guitar stand comes out at £24.40 including delivery and VAT. EDIT: Isn't this similar to another Stagg stand? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spider-Guitar-stand-Electrics-Acoustics/dp/B006GQ4TX6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top I found that looking for reviews of Spider guitar stands. The one review that is there is glowing. I had a look on Thomann, and they have this: http://www.thomann.d...and_rs20861.htm But, it only holds 5 guitars/basses and is a lot more expensive, though still reasonable.
AT Those Chord stands are rubbish. I bought one a few months back and straightaway I knew it was junk. I normally use Stagg SGA010 stands but Adrenaline never had them in stock so I got the Chord one. The assembly was lousy, it's in about 12 - 15 parts the Stagg's only 7. The welded nut snapped off when attaching the top rail, the Stagg has a shoulder fitting far better IMO. Even allowing for the broomhandle dook I fitted the whole thing is very unstable.
Thanks for the warning. I'll steer well clear. The Stagg looks rather simple, but should do the job: http://www.mannsmusic.co.uk/product/31/sga010/stagg-sga010-rack-stand-for-acoustic-or-electric-guitar.html
Been with the band for nigh on 30 years and played that song at every single show... could envisage the odd complaint if we didn't! Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower is simply sublime.
You're a member of Manfred Mann's Earth Band? I'm seriously impressed. Off to listen to 2006 on Spotify. Edit: Your version of "Down in Mexico" updates the Coasters original extremely well. I'm not sure I can say your version is better as like Dylan vs. Hendrix for "All along the watchtower" they are very different arrangements/interpretations, so it's an apples and oranges comparison. But your version is very, very, good and really goes somewhere with the song. IMHO.

While we're talking cheap guitar stands, would this be usable? http://www.juno.co.uk/products/chord-5-way-multi-guitar-rack-stand/526157-01/?currency=GBP&flt=1&gclid=CL_E7vGIqMICFUbMtAodBhQA0w
It's very much an age thing with a lot of covers. The Johnny Burnette arrangement is very much of it's time but at the time was anything but boring. I think it's a generation thing that we are never going to agree on and shouldn't agree as we are seeing them from a totally different angle and that's one of the reasons these sort of threads are interesting.
Which is fair enough. A lot of this depends on which versions have been heard first. In the last four comparisons I've posted, I heard the cover first, and then the original. The Yukihiro Takahashi cover of "I need you" that I mentioned before was one of the few covers I feel is better than the original that I heard after I'd known the original for a while. The original is fine, but the cover just makes something more of the song, and successfully updates it for a whole new era. But I can't find a copy of it. (Which may be a good thing as not all Beatles fans may appreciate all the synthesisers). I enjoy the Sid Vicious version of "My Way" more than Sinatra's version (if that can be called 'the original' given how that song came to be), for the reasons that you give. I wouldn't call it 'better' though.
The singing of the great Johnny Burnette and Ringo both bring me close to tears for completely different reasons. One of these is a classic and one should never have seen the light of day.
Different singers suit songs in different ways. I was thinking of including "All along the watchtower". But a quick relisten makes me think that Bob Dylan's rasp suits the song very well. Hence I think the Jimi Hendrix version is therefore different but not better . I think Ringo does a great job of "You're Sixteen". Johnny Burnette is a great singer and does sing technically better than Ringo, but I think his recording suffers from the rather boring arrangement.

Phosphor bronze strings on Acoustic Basses
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks for the replies. I don't have an acoustic bass yet, but am considering buying a fretless. I really don't like the sound of phosphor bronze strings. In the basses I've tried with them on, I've disliked the 'twangy' sound. I understand how that gives good volume and cuts through, but it doesn't sound like a bass to me. This video compares phosphor bronze to flatwound. The difference in sound is less than I expected. The audio recording might be normalised and therefore misleading. Given the small difference in sound, the lack of finger noise would be a huge advantage, IMHO. What difference in tone I can hear is in the favour of the flatwounds. I've heard that flatwounds are higher tension than other strings, and this can pull at the bridge. Other than that possible problem, it seems to be flatwounds all the way. If I bought an acoustic, I wouldn't use it for acoustic gigs/jamming, but just for practice, and plugged in as my first fretless. -
Why do so many acoustic basses come with phosphor bronze strings? Would Fender flats be a reasonable choice for a fretless acoustic?
+1 That's the one. About the only Beatles cover that's better than the original.
I disagree. Yukihiro Takahashi's cover of "I need you" is IMHO better than the original. Given the electronica production, I would guess that a fair proportion of Beatles fans might disagree.

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
20-odd quid for a pbass anyone? http://www.thomann.d...d_seri_deko.htm
Thats interesting. It doesn't show up in the category 'Decorative Guitars and Basses' even though the listing for the p-bass puts it in that category. There might be more 'decorative' basses that aren't easily found. EDIT. "Item is sold out." -

I am thinking about it very carefully. I could buy the bass and a set of Fender flatwound strings for about £57 total. -

£42 for a four string fretless. And I have some review credit that would cover the postage... http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_b_30_nt_fl_acoustic_ba_deko.htm -
It may cost less on here, but sadly still out of my price range. A thing of rare beauty, however.

This, IMHO, is the most beautiful Warwick that I've ever seen. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Warwick-NT-LTD-2007-AAAA-Koa-Top-4-string-/221616810096?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3399642870

I would buy it if I was a bit more flush with money. -
I pulled the trigger on one of their 5 string fretless basses, plays pretty nicely for such a budget instrument, sounds pretty good, colour me properly impressed.
Which model do you have? Solid body or acoustic? If the 'progressive' bass, is it the older or newer model?

The damage doesn't look very serious, and the action looks comfortable. Bargain city.
