You make some good points, yes we do stand on the shoulders of those earlier designers but while we are doing so, most of us are careful (respectful) not to stomp on their heads.

I have talked with other designers (including one who was responsible for some of the Peavey class D designs) about the ethics of (and the differences between) learning from other designers and simply copying. Most designers have surprisingly high morals and take pride in developing new approaches while refining long standing circuits to improve performance and reliability.

There's general agreement among designers that the customer will accept a "cheap copy" if the price is low enough. The pedal world is a good example of blatant copying (including PCBs). If there's enough of this, it will affect those companies that are currently bringing new approaches and new ideas to the players, ultimately the investment required to develop innovative new products will dry up and many new ideas simply won't make it to market.

It is a real shame because, Behringer and many others for that reason, have unlimited access to cheap Chinese manufacturing, electronic designers and factories that enable them to hoover up any patents that are no longer protected, while churning out much cheap equipment from massive Chinese manufacturing plants. Although expensive, I love UK made HiFi and US Ampegs etc! However, most of this is now owned by groups such as Behringer and IAG, then massed produced in China. Castle, Wharfedale, Ruark, Cyrus, Tannoy, Ampeg and the list goes on. I guess luckily, Ampeg are now owned by Yamaha.

I've been thinking of buying a spare Yamaha BB for when I'm feeling tooo precious about taking my vintage BBs out on the road. The recent chat about the 10 series has made think about the BB 1024... what do they go for these days on the second hand market 🤔??

    About £600 👍

    Embarrassingly, no.

I might actually make a concerted effort to do some on it tomorrow as I have an unexpected day off.

I'm still just not sure what I want to do with the back of it.

I don't just want to do the easiest thing and then regret it.

Absolutely, art takes time and getting it right for you takes even longer. Looking forward to seeing the project take shape for you.

Very kindly @Len_derbyoffered to go out of his way and collect it for me from Coalville. He's heading down my way(ish) in a weeks time so I'll drive up and meet him.

    Can't wait. 😁

Absolutely beautiful 😍 any further forward with bex?

I had a pair of Aguilar SL112s a couple of years ago and I was a Hartke endorsee too, so I have a little bit of background in each camp.  I just felt that a pair of 1x12s was the way I wanted to go and once you get an idea in your head...

Irrespective of the Hartke Hydrives I used (1x15/4x10/2x10 - sorry not the 1x12), I found them all quite bright and they suited my desired tone ('gritty/driven') so based off that, I wouldn't really expect a pair of 1x12s to differ from that significantly - it's simply what they do and they do it very well.

I owned a pair of Aguilars, too - a bit of a vanity purchase - I just figured these would be a decent upgrade from a Barefaced Big One.  To be honest, they didn't suit what I was doing.  They were very hi-fi, quite a bit bassy and lacked a lot of the top end that the horns in the Hydrives (or the 6" Barefaced tweeter) provided.  At the time, I just thought there was something wrong with them, but the horns were working in both cabinets, but the effect was very subtle.  I sold them on.

Right now, I'm running a single Darkglass 1x12.  If I ever have the desire to go back to full time gigging/band, I'd probably get another one of these.  It's quite lovely.

Those are of interest to me. :D

  6. Dood used to use two HD112s, his style of playing requires clarity in all registers so, he would be a great person to ask for some advice from. I have an HX112, it's really cool and I'm on the hunt for another. I like the tweeter and the ability to change the ohms setting on a single cab. Don't know how to tag him in but will try @Dood

Nice one Andy, that was a great bass, some tone from it. and it looks not too bad too lol.

It is the first bass I've owned since my old Yamaha mk1 TRB5 that ticked all the boxes. Looks great and sound sublime :D I love the pup/preamp combo as is really dark for me.

Hi guys. I am thinking of unleashing my inner Mike Inez (Alice in Chains). I've seen some good deals at the moment on the Performer 4 and the Legend 4. One is made in Indonesia, the other in Korea. The Indo one has a reverse P config, the Korean Legend one doesn't. I've seen some demos that suggest both models could do with a pickup and electronics upgrade.

Apart from the finishes, any suggestions of one v the other?

I'm fairly new to Spector basses myself but I do own a Euro LT4 with the Bartolini/Darkglass combination and I absolutely adore the bass and tone from it. The deals on the performer and legend look ideal. May be worth saving for a little longer and picking up a used Euro/Rebop/Eurobolt which may suit you better? There is a rebop on here:

    Good luck, Andy

It's a sad, sad day in Chez Maude today. I have broken my one per decade rule and sold another bass. My BB1024X has gone. 😥

@Al Krow, strike the 1024X from the front page please... but add a 734a while you're editing. 😀

How are you getting on with the BEX?

I'm really pleased that they're being good about it. I mean they should be, but some places aren't.

    I don't want black.

I don't want a refund, as they were the cheapest but price is showing as over £50 dearer.

I'll see what they offer by way of discount and either go with that and flat and polish the lacquer, or return and wait for a replacement, September will soon come around.

If you and Merchant City Music (they are cool :D ) can negotiate a suitable compromise then, that is really good.

    Kind of.

Firstly I want to say I bought the bass through Merchant City Music in Glasgow, or Guitar.co.uk as they are known online, and they are dealing with the problem perfectly. It's not sorted yet but they're offering plenty of options.

I hate complaining to a shop like this as I always feel like they probably think I'm trying it on, it's quite the opposite as I'll happily sort any little issues myself but this is quite bad, and I really didn't expect it on a higher end Yamaha. They're usually bang on.

I sent the seller some pictures and videos of the finish but it's really hard to show a problem in clearcoat, the camera either focuses on the woodgrain or the reflections of the surroundings.

This is the email I got back.

    Hi,

I have spoken to Yamaha today to ask for an opinion and some assistance with this and am just awaiting a reply. The bass in this finish is out of stock at the moment and it looks as though the next available stock is due around beginning of September at the earliest, so seeking a replacement could be a little bit of a wait, but it is something we could make arrangements for. The best alternative we have in stock is the Black version. We can of course collect the bass and cancel down the order within the first 14 days if that seems to be the best thing to do.

As the issues do not affect the functioning of the bass itself though, do you think if there were any scope for a discount to compensate that it would help in keeping hold of the bass as is?

    Thanks,
    Paul

I can't ask for more than that!

So not sorted yet, but it will be one way or another.

    🙂👍

That’s a really good offer, what’s your thoughts?
