I have cupboards and shelves full of CD's, about one thousand at the last count. I just can't help buying them, and trying them. Many of these have only been played once, all are in excellent condition. I've checked the prices against Amazon, I think they're pretty fair. All my prices include postage, the Amazon ones don't so take that into account if you do your own comparison. OK, here's a bit of a list. I can 'do a deal', if you want more than one. The never ending quest for the lowest possible action
Soliloquy replied to CHRISDABASS's topic in Bass Guitars
I have mine set up really low, a couple of millimetres at the 12th fret. I have ramps fitted to all my basses, that kind of helps to keep my playing under control so I don't get rattles and buzzes, unless I want them. -
Fodera Yin Yang - what do people think aesthetically?
Soliloquy replied to molan's topic in Bass Guitars
Wooten pulls it off. And i like the fact it's done with woods rather than a paint job. It doesn't offend me at all. The one you had at bassday UK was a much better looking instrument in my humble opinion. If i was buying a Fodera, i'd want it to look like mine, not his. If you get me?
I think it's a beautiful bass. However I totally agree with this, spending that sort of money I'd want something that was 'mine'. -
I bought this beautiful bass a few weeks ago, and I've really fallen in love with it. It's probably the closest bass to a Fodera that I've tried. other than a Fodera. It has a really beautiful 'natural' sound. It doesn't sound overly bassy, or middly, or trebly. Just a very even sounding bass. It's got a great preamp too, but I'm tending to keep the pre switched out. I'm not sure what the top wood is, I'm not 100% sure what the body wood is come to that lol. I am thinking about having it refinished though. It's currently got a sort of matt finish to it that I'm not keen on. I've had a couple of basses with this sort of finish, and I just don't think it's at all hard wearing, and it really doesn't show off the bass to it's full potential. It's got a beautiful top wood, that's very highly figured, and actually has a lot of 'flaming' on it, (very 3D when you hold it to the light). This wood look stunning with a deep gloss coat on it. I've approached Martin Sims, and he's given me a very good price, it'd take about 6 weeks. One thing that worried me though is this. Would the bass sound different with a deep gloss coat on rather than the very thin matt coat that's on it now ? Has anyone changed the finish on their bass, either from this to a deep gloss, or vice versa ? I bought a Sei bass from a guy a couple of years ago. He ordered it with this sort of finish, but when he collected it, it had been given a deep gloss coat. He didn't like it an told me it had 'spoiled the sound'.

I just bought this last week from a fellow basschatter. I couldn't decide between this and a Shuttle 6 or 9. I started several threads over on Talkbass about the subject, and went for the LM3 in the end. I played a Shuttle 6 this afternoon, and I really think I'd prefer one of them (if only I'd waited ). There's a nice one for sale on here now. This is in excellent condition. I'd like £395 including postage or you can collect it.

If you're in the market for a new cab, and you're considering a Bergantino or other such high end cab, then add one of these to your short list. I've owned pretty much every make of cab at some point in the last 20 years, but this beats them all, seriously ! I ordered it from Andy at Acme last Friday evening and it arrived via Fedex this morning, how's that for service ? It's incredibly well built, very much like the proverbial tank ! But it's still an easy lift. I ordered an 8ohm cab, I plan on buying another one the same in the next month or so. It's a '3 way' design, featuring two Eminence woofers, a mid range driver and a really nice tweeter. The mid range driver and the tweeter levels can both be adjusted by seperate attenuators located on the rear of the cab. I've been using it with my Markbass LM3, and I'm very impressed. The sound from this thing is amazing. It's very, very clear but deep. There's no 'boominess' at all, just deep natural sounding bass. I've been lucky enough to record in some very nice recording studios, and the sound from this is just like you hear cming out of good quality monitors. A low B sounds like a low B. The cab goes down to 31Hz which is the fundamental of the B string. Most other cabs don't get anywhere near this. I've read that manufacturers 'tune' their cabs to sound 'big' on low notes, masking the fact that they can't actually faithfully reproduce the note being played. The cost of this including shipping and import taxes/VAT is less than a Bergantino 2x10 and compares favourably with other manufacturers 2x10's, but it far, far better than any of them. It's probably not ideal for rock or metal, because it's just too clean sounding. But for funk, jazz and anything else it's ideal.
so on that metaphor wimbledon beating liverpool to win the 1989 FA cup is punk? a team playing the simplest football with passion can beat the most pure football sides with the best technique. As a spurs fan ill ask when arsenal last won something....
They were both professional teams, so I should imagine that their individual technical abilities were somewhat better than the average player. I can't imagine a coach on the eve of a big match saying to his team, "Ok lads, we won't practice ball control, or penalty taking, or dribbling or whatever today, just play with a load of passion and we'll win"

A hell of a lot of people 'get by' with the way they play. Sure, they're playing with bands and gigging, maybe doing some session work even. They really don't realise how much their playing can be improved by doing something a little different. Using a different approach towards an aspect of their playing. I mainly play 5 and 6 string basses. I went like most people from 4 to 5 and then to 6 strings. Taking everything I'd learned on a 4 string bass to each one. Applying the same playing technique to 5 and 6 string as I used on a 4 string. It was only when I had a lesson from Steve Lawson (I wanted to improve my solo playing), that I realised how much better my playing would be by using a different right hand approach. I was playing with my thumb resting on the low B string and stretching down to play the G and C strings. I studied briefly with the US player Todd Johnson a couple of years ago too. I learned some cool muting stuff from him. Again tidying my playing up. He uses the 'floating thumb' thing a lot in his playing. What I'm saying is you need to keep an open mind with regard to learning, and improving your playing. Forget the 'if it aint broke' mentality that so many people adopt.

Like I tell my students. Playing a musical instrument is a bit like playing football. We can all kick a ball about, but that doesn't make us footballers. It's about control of what you're doing, and execution of what you do. Technique can kind of be broken down in to a couple of different elements.............. 1) Basic playing, eg. clean picking only playing the string you want to play, muting so that unwanted strings don't ring. Ergonomics, efficiency of movement so you use the minimum of effort to play, you don't want to get cramp while playing. This comes from good left/right hand technique. Playing close to the bridge for a 'tighter' sound, moving closer to the neck more a more rounded sound. Bending strings, hammer ons, slurs, harmonics, playing chords etc, etc. 2) Technique for 'the gig'. What genre of music are you going to be playing ? Does it require slapping ? Is a fretless bass suited to the track, and all that entails..vibrato etc. Does the track/gig require detuning or a 5 string to get notes lower than an 'E'.
-
i think your ability to listen is more important than your level of technique. I've been asked to play on things because people know my level of hearing is such i can play stuff that is 'right' for the track. Over the years the stuff that is 'right' has become more learned as i improve my technique, but that is like a tool for the job
But to be able to play the stuff that is right for the track, you have to be physically able to play the stuff that you're hearing .

Just sold my GS410 to Josh. He PM'ed me one day and it was gone the next . Great guy to deal with, no messing about at all.
