Is my Peavey Deltabass Crap ? Ideas on replacement wanted
bass_ferret replied to Prosebass's topic in Amps and Cabs
I have found Peavey to be quite coloured, so not surprised by your problem. The man that made my basses started importing EBS gear because he found it was the best for what you are trying to do - not a cheap option though. -
Good advice Lo. But did you not see the post where he said he had got an SWR Workingman 15?

An active bass has to have a battery. It is possible to phantom power actives with some (EBS) amps but nobody would build an active bass in expectation of phantom power.

Welcome. Good news on the band front - beats working 100 hour weeks as a junior doctor

You are lucky you can get it in the corner. Without knowing a lot more about your gear and the venues its difficult to say cos corner is best. Side and back walls have less of an impact but may produce echos that muddy the sound but there is f*** all you can do about that. The other thing thats likely to be a problem is if you are standing right next to your rig - you probably wont be able to hear it but move a few feet away and its likely to get a lot louder. I think 15's are worse than 10's and 12's in this respect and this is one of the reasons they are less popular than they used to be.

If you read this it does have a bit of a rant about the labelling of volume knobs on amplifiers. The problem is they are all different and I am assuming that by gain you mean the input level next to the jack and by volume you mean the master. That is my assumption based on your assumption that we all know how the knobs on your amp are labelled. Many amps now have led's on the input level and suggest that for best signal to noise the level is set so that the light flashes briefly when playing the loudest notes. In the absence of a flashing light you have to use your ears. Doing this may well sound different to turning the output level to full and using the input level to set your volume because there will be a hotter signal going through the pre-amp. f*** about with it - try both approaches and trust your ears as to which sounds best.

Not sure whats so hard to understand in the wiki article here - even tells you what frequencies are affected depending on how far away from the wall you are, but its pretty clear that corner is best, close to the wall is not so good but better than not close to the wall. How is this not clear?

Sell the combo and buy a head - it will probably work out cheaper in the long run and a lot less f***ing about.

Ashdown is a bit marmite. Never heard a bad word about GK or SWR. Ampeg can have reliability problems.
Alex, can you perhaps explain to me what the difference would be between setting the gain on your amp to max and setting the volume control to achieve a given perceived sound level, and setting the gain lower (say half?) and then setting the volume control to achieve the same perceived sound level as in the first scenario?
Not sure what you are getting at here as you seem to think gain and volume are different things. Have a read of the article on the wiki concerning this very subject.

Surely the bass merchant took the opportunity to sell you a bag and ears and leads?

Welcome - another speaker nerd/guru (delete as applicable). I see you have already met Alex and Bill

26.5 is short short! Strings could be a problem. I think there is something to do with the speaking length of the string but I dont know - when you see some of these ERB players putting hairbands round the 12th fret to damp the strings that makes the scale of the bit they are playing a lot less than 26'5.

Looks like something out of Dr Who!
Off Topic, but is that a Naim CD player & speakers I see there Mr Ferret?
Only the cheap ones though

I have two Genz Benz NeoX112T's. I just picked on the Ashdown cabs because somebody was recommending adding a 1x15 to an Ashdown 2x10 in another thread.

Get yourself down to Mark at Bass Direct - Kenilworth aint that far from West Brom - and try the Mark Bass with some Bergantino cabs.
I can see what your saying about matched cabs etc. Maybe the 15 and 10's combination would work better with two amps, one through each cab. Then you wouldnt have an issue of 10's overbearing the 15. Im actually thinking of having second amp running through 15's or 12's in addtion to my two 4X10's. In effect having two rigs. ONe for mids and highs (the 10's) and one for super lows. Daft maybe but I think it would sound great.
You wont be the first. Before he started bi-amping The Ox used to have one Hiwatt Head with the bass turned up full and one with the treble turned up. Jack Bruce did the same with his marshalls IIRC.
Thought I may aswell add my two cence. From a completely "untechnical" view. mind I used a 4X10 & 1X15 for years. And I could definitly notice the 15. Just seemed to add a nice fat backbone to it. I think many people use this set up because well....to sound a bit niave maybe...it sounds good?
I must admit I was quite surprised to see such a difference with the Ashdown cabs and it may explain the marmite response to Ashdown in general and why so many people think it sounds like sh*t, if they have been listening to a rig like that. I've just looked at EBS Pro-line cabs and there the 1x15 has +3dB on the 2x10 and is the same as the 4x10.
I don't really understand the technicalities but I am intrested in cutting through the 'I think this is better than...' that tends to exist in the various opinions bandied about. What conclusion do you draw and what would you recommend the potential buyer (thats me now BTW) should take into consideration in wanting a decent headroom and suitability for double and electric. Sorry it's so obviously personally motivated, but I am looking for a rig as you know. Cheers in advance Jake
Well of course everyone should buy with their ears but I doubt if many users of mis-matched cabs have tried matched cabs and there I guess is the rub. What I have done is found a cab I liked and bought two of them. I think chopthebass has got 3 Aguillar DB112's.

Dead spots can strike any bass any time unless its graphite. Thats the nature of wood. Take it back.
