Frankly, for the money, it looks pretty tempting. I glad that I am on a bass buying moratorium. Why am I still checking here then?

My experience has been totally different to this (yes I know I sound like a scratched record). I have used mine in Jazz settings ( http://www.myspace.com/huwwarrenmusic) as well as the National Folk Orchestra of Wales and numerous other smaller settings. It has been greeted with nothing less than rabid enthusiasm by very experienced musicians who certainly would not just say nice things to my face to humour me. Kiwi, the one you played might well have been a duff one, but I have played duff P basses and would not choose to tar the whole of P bass world by that one dodgy one I played. "The intonation was shocking, absolutely impossible to tune up on open strings and play a note in tune." Again my experience is the polar opposite. The intonation at the 12th fret on mine is not bang on but shocking is not a word I would use. I can quite happily tune mine on open strings and both my Polytune and iStrobosoft apps are more than happy to tune it acoustically. If it was a new one then yes the strings need time to settle, like any strings, but definitely non metal ones. "The E string was a non event". Dead string? Certainly not an issue on mine. I am not looking for any sort of conflict here, each to their own and it would be pretty tedious if we all played Gibson EBO basses and nothing else but to diss a whole model line so publicly as you did on the initial post is I think slightly unfair. Your experience, while quite possibly true for the one you played was presented as a factual analysis of the whole line.

I just did a gig with these guys (as a dep) http://www.clera.org/saesneg/clerorfa.php playing the ubass. These are HARDCORE folk players. They could not get enough of the ubass. It is a totally valid instrument.

For about 1 minute max. Clear lines are then drawn. I am too old to be fighting with other people for my space.

So glad that I have no funds for this and that you are a solid 5 hour drive away. What would I do with a 2x15 anyway? Partner it with that Trace VA350 (or whatever it is) valve job. I would then be ready for all my rock gigs. I hardly ever do rock gigs, but if I did this would be waiting in the corner for me. It is just as well that I am broke.
Through the AI however it sings
I am not a betting man, but would put money on the fact that it sounds good because the AI pre-amp is buffering the piezo properly.

I ventured down from North Wales for this. It was a superb evening with quality all the way. The interplay and musical communication within the band was obvious and real. They have been touring for a lot of the year so it would be very easy to just pump out the tunes and get out of there, but from where I was standing they were all totally engaged and delivering - supporting someone who was singing from her heart who was performing songs which obviously meant something to her. There were no tedious solo moments delivering gratuitous chops, everything served the song - and THAT is where it is at. The older I get, the less interest I have in being in the same room as someone giving me the benefit of their practice regime, I want to see musicians communicate and create something beautiful. If you do too, then get along to see any of the gigs on the rest of this tour. Proper players playing proper songs. Kenny was great, just laying it down The only bit I did not enjoy was the fact that I was in the audience and not playing the songs - that must be a great gig to have.
Great project. I got in touch with Road Toad as well about a bass uke, but after 1 reply didn't get anything else! If you don't want an order then so be it! Do you know if Pete builds a bass uke anyway as I can't see anything on his site?
This is his first, but having spent some time with him I have no reason to believe it will be anything but stonking. He was going to build a full acoustic one (with pick up obv) for me but I fell in love with the Uklectic concept. He does "build a Uke in 3 days" weekends so I might well find myself there for one of those and build a "normal" bass uke one day. My experience with Road Toad was exactly the same. Strange, because my money is good, but I am happy because I am getting it done by a bloke down the road:)

I have no problem shipping abroad (unlike 70% of Americans), but be aware that Paypal will hit you for more cut to change money from one currency to another.
I've bought an igig, mono and protec contego in the past three months - I'd have to say that whilst they're all excellent bags, the contego is my favourite as it offers the greatest level of protection. They're available at thoman for about 90 euros - much less expensive than an igig
http://www.thomann.de/gb/protec_contego_e_bass_case.htm Contego 71 Euros which is £59. I have one (and paid more for it) It is the bomb. At that price I might well put my Wood n Tronics and my Reunion Blues and my Ritter ones up for sale. There really is no competition - what a great sales pitch that will be.

So I went to see Pete again this evening (those of you who live in less rural areas have NO IDEA how unusual it is to be able to jump in the car and go and see a luthier). He has done all the scale drawings and I am going full cocobolo front/fingerboard/headstock facing. He has said that he is making two - the second with his own choice of front woods - so if anyone else fancies one you know where to go. I tried bottom F sharp once. It was all great apart form the open string. The open string would have worked if I had filed the nut at all. D'ohwen
I was thinking about getting one of these to get pure electronic bass sounds with the original bass sound taken totally out of the mix but not sure if there are any good sound modules out there with decent bass sounds on them. Anyone know? With regard to string dampening, has anyone tried putting a strip of foam under the strings at the bridge? I saw this on a regular electric bass years ago for string dampening.
You could hang around Ebay waiting for an Alesis Nanobass to turn up. I cannot believe that they have any resale by now and they are packed full of useable bass sounds.
Just checked the afore mentioned J5 pics and also my '96 US Jazz which is also for sale. They both have the same kind of Gotoh tuners, so I guess these would be the natural choice if you can get them.
I have some Gotohs like in the pics, but the holes are WAY too big for them. I have a set of bog standard Schallers with the ferrules which kind of fit so I will get the metalwork dept in work to slce a bit of the backplate off and then I can rejoice in the fact that I have saved a few £ Thanks all.

Hands up who would not charge 400% more for their time if they could? End of. And frankly, good luck to them as well.

I picked up a repaired US Jazz 5 neck from silverfoxnik. I have now worked out what to do with it but cannot work out what machines to put on it. It had none when nik had it, and the holes vary in size from just over half an inch to almost three quarters. Truly stupendous QC. There is a US J5 from the same year on here (http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=97782) but the machines are too small for the holes. I have tried some Gotohs and they just get lost. I have a set of bog standard Fender-esque Schallers but the backplate is too big. There seem to be 3 holes for these, two towards the tip of the headstock and one towards the nut. I REALLY don't care about authenticity, but wondered if anyone could shine a light on what might fit there? I can do pics if it helps. TIA
Now I've sold a couple of instruments, I'm in the process of shopping. A NBD is coming I've seen the Dingwall Combustions and am really taken by them. I've also seen other basses like the Laklands 55's, Daryl Jones and then other interesting basses like the Bolin NS5's Has anyone got any opinions of any of these. Any thoughts much appreciated.
I have a Bolin NS5. I have tried to sell it, but I just cannot let it go. It is light and the piezos sound like I always hoped piezos would (are you listening Music Man?).
