If I was more concerned about decent hammond and reasonable pianos and synths, I would go for the Roland VR09.

And now you've got me looking at this😁

I see you can download a cover band preset bank for it, which would be useful for lazy buggers like me.

looks a bit cheaper than the ds61 with a better organ/synth trying to work out what the advantage of the ds61 would be over this?

I have a Roland DS61 which I love because you can play whatever sound simply and easily, again large keyboard.

That’s interesting, I’ve been drifting up in price since I started looking at this and the Juno DS61 was looking like a great choice. Am I correct the phrase pad thing can be used to trigger wav files that can be loaded in?  Only real downside is it a bit on the large side.

btw- There’s one on gumtree in Bridgend at 325 which seems a bit of a bargain, but a bit too far for me to travel, so might be useful for someone nearby.

  3. The footswitch thing looks really useful, especially to fill things out if you only have 1 guitarist, but for what I’m thinking I just want a cheapish small lightweight keyboard with some decent sounds built in, that can occasionally be used on some songs when there is a keys intro etc. I’m playing in pubs where space is a premium and I don’t want to be messing around with laptops etc., that will likely get beer spilt on them, knocked on the floor or nicked. So far the MX49 mentioned earlier, or the Roland Go:keys, look like they might be contenders.

The McMillan 12 step pedals on my pedalboard.

Just had to look that up.

Not sure how you make use of the the 5 note polyphony though unless you are an octopus🤣

  5. I currently play bass in a rock/pop covers band. I love playing bass and wouldn’t want to switch to any other instrument. There are times when a bit of keys on an intro etc., would be useful so I did wonder if it was practical to have a little keyboard setup on stage to do this, then switch back to the bass for the bulk of the song. I can play the piano a bit, so wondered about giving this a go.

Anyone do this? If so how do you get on? Is it a major hassle?

I don’t know much about keyboards, but I’d want something lightweight, compact that doesn’t take up too much space, doesn’t require hooking up to laptops etc., and has all the sounds built in. Wouldn’t want to spend a great deal either, ideally under a few hundred quid. Any suggestions on this front?

Why not take the neck off and ship both parts in your suitcase ?

I do that with my Yamaha RBX270. Leave the strings on, takes 2 minutes to take the neck off. Always take it on holiday/work trips, fits nicely in a largish suitcase. Also take a little vox amplug headphone amp. Don’t forget to pack the screwdriver so you can put it together at the other end.

  7. Thanks for all the tips.... I hadn’t looked at the 425, I assume it is just the previous version of the 435, is there much difference?

That Peavey looks nice, but I guess I’d have to wait for one to pop up for sale.

I’ve got a MM sub4 so know they are great, mine has 20mm string spacing so assumed the sub5 would be generous too, but found out they are only 16mm, which makes me a but hesitant.

I was going to bid on that Maruszczyk Elwood 5 mentioned previously but I found out it had been ordered with the extra narrow bridge instead of the 19mm it comes with normally - shame as it went for a bit of a bargain price in the end.

  8. Shamberg. 🤣

Yeah, I’d looked at those, a lot of bass for the money, I’d seen some reports the HBs could be pretty heavy and the QC can be a bit inconsistent but I guess if you get a lemon you can send it back.

Currently thinking for £350 I can get a Yammy BB235 or TRBX305. Based on the sound clips I think the 235 sounds better, but I already have P, J and PJ basses so the 305 would add a more modern sound. Plus the 24 frets would be nice. Is there a big step up with a BB435, I don’t hear the 235 mentioned as much.

What about the squier vintage modified jazz 5? They regularly come up on eBay for not much

Yes, I’d consider one of those.

There's a Maruszczyk Elwood 5 on eBay for £499 at the moment. About 1/4 of what it was new.  I'd have it if I didn't have two already.

That looks very nice! I’ll keep an eye on that thanks.

  10. I have a MM Sub4, it’s a great bass for the money. The sub5 was definitely on my radar and I was thinking of posting an ad to see if anyone wanted to swap a 5 for my sub4

I’m also a Yamaha fan, my first bass was an RBX270.

The sires look like great value.

  11. I keep thinking about trying a 5 string, but I’ve been a bit reluctant up until now in case I like it and it makes my 4 strings redundant.

Ideally I’d like a 34” scale length so it doesn’t affect my muscle memory switching to my 4 strings. Also I don’t get on too well with narrow string spacing - prefer a pbass neck to a J, though not sure if it is the spacing or the thickness/width.

Any suggestions? I don’t want to spend loads in case it’s not for me, ideally under £500 but might go higher if needed.

  12. I think I’ve come to realise I’m not really a pedal person.

The one thing I couldn’t live without however is the pitch shift on my HXFX. I use it for Eb, D and C tunings for various songs we do in the band. I’ve finally updated my hxfx to 3.0 and the new poly capo tune does sound a bit better (less warble but at the expense of a bit more latency). You can get away with it in the mix however solo’d at home it’s a bit unnatural.

As this is pretty much all I need I wondered if I’d be better served by a £80 digitech drop rather than the HXFX. Has anyone tried one vs. the helix?

  13. Hi,

Just got my first set of labella low tension flats and they have little numbered cubes on each string at the ball end.

A quick google brought up some suggestions from the talkbass forum that you take these off, however when I put them in the ferrule and apply tension the cubes allow the string to rotate freely. When I take them off they don’t rotate easily, so I’m thinking that actually leaving them on may help prevent the strings getting twisted when I wind them onto the tuning pegs.

    Any thoughts on this?

Right lockdown #3 is here and I'm not going to go another year without music so I'm going to try and get my psuedo band using Jamulus.

It could be an uphill battle ..

    - drummer: highly skilled IT engineer but doesn't know what an audio interface is or what to do with it.
    - guitarist: got his first PC this Christmas, although in fairness he has already got an audio interface and we did just test JamKazam.  Latency was an issue but he was on WiFi so we need to solve that problem.

I've got a Jamulus Server configured to run on my Laptop so we don't need to worry about the central servers (hopefully that will help with latency).  Once we've got their IT issues solved I'm hoping we can have some successful jams.

Our guitarist setup a server in his laptop, but to be honest it had more latency than some of the public ones. When I looked into it to get a low latency private server you need to setup a cloud based one.

The other key thing is WiFi has too much jitter, so you must wire in direct with an Ethernet cable to your router. I bought a cheap 20M Ethernet cable from Amazon so I could route to my music room without moving the router.

  15. Just bought some DT770 pro's too and agree, weak midrange and a harsh top end, they are supposed to be fairly bass heavy, but these sound pretty tinny. My Sony XM1000xm2s sound a lot better.

I'm wondering if they were defective then saw your post @dave_bass5 . Out of interest where did you return yours to? I wondered if I got your  returned set!

I got them to go with some edrums I'm getting for xmas, and from what I've read on drumming forums they are highly recommended, so I might wait till Christmas to see if they are any better with them.
