1.
Probably; a bit like resisting The Borg I think.
I tried similar thinking to resist getting a Strat "coil splitting the humbuckers on my guitar will get me the sound" but yesterday I bought an American Strat lol. I'll probably end up getting a P and punishing my wallet even more
 2.
It's a good sound. It is big. It does remind me of a P... but it does not sound like a Precision. How close do you need it to be? It's a good sound, it's fat, it'd go well for anything where a Precision would do well. But it does not have *that* Precision sound.
Appreciate the reply bud. I agree that it does sound good and it does sound fat. I just stuck some flats on for the first time since I installed the series switch and it sounds great! In a way the question was to see that maybe if a lot of people were saying that once the tone's rolled back, a series J sounds just like a P it might allow me to talk myself out of buying a P. Maybe resisting GAS is futile!
 3. In your opinion, when a J is modded/switched to series pickups and played with the tone rolled all the way back, how different is the sound to a P with the tone all the way back? Unnoticeable or still a different sound? Would it make a difference if flats were used?
 4.
Emailed them late last night. Had a reply at 07:40 this morning. Top service.
I've emailed them with a few inquiries before and they always respond well and quickly. More reason I'll be going to them for my next pickup purchase.
 5.
I had a look at the guitar pickups a few years ago after hearing positive things, but got put off by the ridiculously 'metal' names for everything. Not sure whether they were being ironic, but I came away from the web site thinking they should do the Spinal Tap endorsement.
Their pickups are named so people have an idea what they sound like, they're mostly named after guitar players. The ones that have "metal" names are named after metal players and will be suitable for metal. The pickups that are suitable for other genres are named for them too, e.g. "Black Dog" - Jimmy Page sound, "Mother's Milk" - RHCP sound, "Apache" - Hank Marvin etc.
 6. Been seriously considering buying a couple of sets of these for a while now. They get a lot of praise on guitar forums.
 7. I had GAS for a P-Bass but I've cured myself of it by installing a series switch in my Jazz. Only time will tell if the PBAS comes back
 8.
I've just bought a second hand MIA Fender P bass from a seller on this forum...it's a red one, but hey, I'll have to live with that! I'm hoping that this'll scratch that itch. After some thought, I realised that if i went for a MIM Fender or the Squier CV I'd spend all the time I had it wondering what the MIA would be like. So thought it would be best to just dive in...it's not that much over my initial budget...really. Thanks to all that contributed to the thread.
Just watch you don't spend your time wondering what a Custom Shop would be like
 9.
There's a Squier CV in Inca Silver for sale on here for £199. For me it's an absolute no-brainer; if I could get on with Jazzes I'd have had it. My two Squiers are excellent instruments and incredibly well made so I'd have no qualms buying it blind. http://basschat.co.u...46#entry3106246 Additionally, I've tried the VM Squiers and while they're nice, the difference in quality between them and the CVs is night and day.
Nice!
 10.
Instant upgrade - what's not to like?
If you put the gold USA Fender logo on instead of the black Mexico Fender logo on it, it's an even bigger upgrade
 11.
I would say that more expensive doesn't always mean better. I have a MIM Fender Jazz, and have played MIA Jazz's in music shops and can't hear a lot of difference. There is a difference, but is it £7 - 800 worth of difference; not in my opinion. Price is about desirability. Also, some MIM and MIA basses sound better than others. I wouldn't go for a MIA over an MIM without hearing them both first, that's for sure.
If sound was the only difference you could just get the MIM and buy the Custom Shop pickup used in the MIA for 100 quid and save a fortune.
 12.
Squire's are great buys you can easy take the decal off and put a fender logo on it
I hate that idea so much
 13. I just installed a series switch into my J bass and recorded a wee demo of it on and off: https://www.youtube....h?v=se2z4keVXKs I've only been playing for 3 months so apologies for any lack of skill or technique.
 14. If you add 39 quid to your budget you could get a Schecter from Andertons that has Grover tuners, large chunky bridge, Tusq nut, good strong pickups and made in one of the most reputable factories in the world.
 15.
My query is really whether the new one (above) is of good quality, and is the price difference between new & second hand purely down to collectability.
The more expensive second hand ones will be MIA. If not then the seller is taking the piss. The MIM standard P-Bass is okay. I preferred the Classic 50s when I compared the two but it is a good bit more expensive. According to a lot of people, the Squier Classic Vibe 70s P-Bass is better and cheaper than the Fender standard P. That wouldn't surprise me if it's true, especially the pickups, because Squier CV guitars have better pickups than standard Fenders. It does have "Squier" on the headstock though which may or may not matter to you.
 16. Interesting to see this post about the switch. I was thinking about getting an S1 switch but it seemed a bit footery to wire up so I've just gone for a push-pull. What is it about the actual switch itself you didn't like compared to a push-pull?
 17. Anyone got any EQ tips for making a Jazz sound more like a P on a recording?
 18. I bought a J because people on forums said it can sound pretty much like a P with only subtle differences. I then found it to sound nothing like a P but have now grown to love the J's own sound. I do still want a more P sound though and am wanting to try out a serial switch mod but the pickups on my bass are weird and have all sorts of wires so I'm hoping to get some clarification on what the wires actually do.
 19.
Higher due to the board radius - I couldn't stop playing it and I really doubt you need to change the pup.
Yeah I'd only change the pup on the Standard, I'd keep the 50s stock. Anyone know if the 50s ones are ceramic or Alnico? Think I could get used to the radius. Would be a stark contrast to the 16" fretboard on my J.
 20. Just had a play of both. At first the 50s was weird how the middle strings were higher than the outer but it was actually nice to play, felt different to what I expected. Glossy neck maybe felt a tad sticky. Then tried the standard and was surprised that the neck was less comfortable. Still decent but I actually preferred the 50s.
 21. Another thing to note when talking about the price difference between Squiers and Fenders is that there are a lot of people who will pay extra purely to have one logo over the other. Just like when people pay 3 times the price for a polo shirt with a Ralph Lauren logo on it.
 22. MIM Standard to American Standard, there is an upgrade in the hardware and electronics used. On guitars certainly the American has a neck with rolled edges, not sure if that applies to basses. Going down to the Squier Affinity there will be an even further drop in the hardware and electronics. It'll probably be as cheap they can possibly find really. Where it really gets muddy is comparing high end Squiers to low end Mexicans and high end Mexicans to low end Americans. By pretty much any account I've ever came across the high end Squiers are better, or at least as good as, the low end Mexicans despite costing less. Same with high end Mexicans being as good as low end Americans.
