1. Another vote for ACS Custom's. I've been using them for years, as a gig goer and onstage when IEM's are not available. They do seem to have a bit of a high end shelf, but mine are the older ER-15's. Never had any issues though, even with that slight high end cut (that's the harmful stuff anyway) there is always plenty of clarity.
2. Are you considering any trades for this beast? I have an EBS Fafner 2 I'd be happy to trade if you're interested?
3. I was lucky enough to visit the Orange factory last year and try some amps. I've been using and touring their 8x10 for about 5 year now. I went in with the preconception that the 4 Stroke would be my least favourite of the three amps they now do. I left with serious GAS for one! The OB-1 just sounded too fizzy for my liking. And as much as I love the AD200b when I have used one with a supplied back line, I really struggle with its limited tone shaping. An Orange employee showed me the way the Compression knob worked and I was sold. A really nice bit of kit. The only thing that has since stopped me getting one is the struggle to part ways with my EBS Fafner 2.
4. I may come to regret this but here we go. For sale is my EBS Fafner II Extreme Edition. Its a 750w power house that is up there with Aguilar DB751’s and Ampeg SVT’s. I have been using the amp since September last year, I’ve done about 5 full UK tours in this time and it has served me incredibly well night after night. If you’re reading this then you probably know all about them, but I’ll describe some of its features for those who don’t. It is a hybrid amp with two channels that can be used in series or parallel. One channel is solid state super hi-def, classic EBS. The second is a dirty channel that runs through a pre-amp tube (this most recent Extreme Edition in particular features a Groove Tubes 12AX7). Each channel has its own volume with an overall master volume. These features make it incredibly flexible. But to be honest though this is just scratching the surface of what this amp is capable of. If you enjoy dialling in your specific sound then this is the amp for you. When I originally got the amp the Tube channel did not work, this was down to a resistor coming away from the PCB. Steve at Root Two in South Shields repaired this while also lifting the component further off the PCB for better cooling all the while further bracing the legs. Steve is incredibly capable and is more than happy to confirm this work on request. The Tube channel has been fully operational since Steve worked on the amp in September. The amp is in fantastic condition, it just has some small scratches on the bottom from being put in a rack case (I’ll throw the SKB one pictured in with the price). All positives then, so I hear you asking “why are you selling?!” Well I am lucky enough to have been offered an endorsement with Orange, so this will be going towards the purchase of a new Orange head. I understand this is a serious bit of kit at a serious amount of money, so I am happy to answer any questions or show the amp working by request for anyone with genuine interest, so no time wasters please. I am based in Sunderland. Due to the amps weight it is COLLECTION ONLY. I may consider drop off or meeting halfway within reason. Unfortunately I am not interested in trades. £1500
5. Apologies for re-booting an older thread. But I was lucky enough to visit Orange HQ a couple days ago to try a couple of the new heads. Ive been using their 8x10 cab for a few years now with a number of different heads (none of them Orange). Rightly or wrongly I went with a preconceived view that I was going to be choosing a favourite from either the AD200b or the OB-1. I was genuinely shocked by the 4-stroke's quality. As many have expressed on here, I was concerned with a lack of 'Pre-Gain' control, I love to add a bit of bite and aggression before the EQ stage. However bringing in the Compression control acted like a really versatile gain control, adding grunt and bite as the knob went up. I was really impressed, totally opposite to the clinical tone I was expecting. The EQ section on the 4-Stroke was nice and powerful and perfect for someone like me that really likes to dial in certain frequencies. To be honest, it made the AD200b look like a stone age one trick pony. As the Orange employee rightly said, 'the AD is more of a sledgehammer than a precision tool'. For me, the OB-1 just didn't do it. The Drive control was a bit fizzy. Although the distortion was post EQ (so the EQ did effect the distortion) I still struggled to get the sound that was in my head out of the 8x10 cab. Unlike something like a Sansamp BDDI which blends the original signal and the effected single really well, the blend control on the OB-1 was still quite separated. Like I said, just not for me. I'd just like to say I am no way affiliated with Orange. All food for thought. I just thought I'd post my experience with the head for anyone who'd be interested. There doesn't seem to be much else kicking about the net!
6. Here we have my Gallien Krueger 700rb MK2. I bought this new from GAK in about 2006, it has been serviced twice in this time. I am only selling due to a recent purchase so it has became a backup which I haven’t had to call upon for over 6 month, so it might as well go! This has been one of the most reliable and versatile amps I’ve ever used. It has played everything from small rooms through a single 15” cab to festival main stages through an 8x10, all the while never being out of its depth. This head would be bang on for any player looking for an upgrade to something with a little more power or someone looking for a lightweight head reliable enough to tour. I’ve done numerous UK and EU tours with this little beast, it has never let me down. The head has a few scuffs and scrapes that I have tried to picture. It is the usual rack rash etc and all purely cosmetic. The worst is a small scratch along the top which happened in the first week of purchase before it was housed in a rack. Since then it has never gigged without a case. This won't come with the case pictured. I have a larger one I can probably dig out to put it in. The gain pot is a tad scratchy when turning, but could probably do with a bit of electrical cleaner to sort it. No time wasters please. Based in Sunderland. Collection only. Can be shown working by prior arrangement.
7. Very nice! I was seriously considering a Greystache last year when I was on a quest for my first Fuzz. Ended up with a Hail Satan Deluxe by Abominable Electronics. I can't rate it highly enough! So versatile and plenty of options to still cut through two guitars live.
8. You may have mis-read the post there my friend. No one said it was a £50-£100 repair, I was suggesting thats how much I'd hope to pay. From talking to a few amp repair companies thats a good couple of hours on the bench. I gave EBS a very detailed description of the fault and judging by the signal path within the amp it could only be a few components that are causing the Valve channel to be faulty. I am certainly a lot more confident with EBS' diagnosis than anyone else's. One amp repair company I spoke to said if I gave them the amp to repair they'd even do the same thing and email EBS for a diagnosis. The seller has no clue what the issue is, he's been happy to use it as a Solid State and just wants something all valve for his studio. Regards the purchase, it would be a trade. With the Fafner standing me about half of what you suggest the going rate for them is used.
9. Thanks for the reply Graham. I dropped EBS Technical a direct email after reading on a few forums that they are incredibly helpful, and they were! (It might be worth dropping them a line yourself. They've been known to supply parts and advice on amps that aren't even in warranty!) They basically said the Fafner 2 has a very low failure rate and is no doubt in need of a small repair to a broken connection on the pc board. I could probably afford to spend £50-£100 repairing it and it would still stand me a lot less than I could get for it on the second hand market. So I think Iam just going to bite the bullet and take the risk!
10. Hi everyone. Iam a long time reader of these forums but Ive got myself into a little bit of a pickle which has called me to post in the hope of finding some answers! Ive been offered a used EBS Fafner 2 at a very good deal. I went to try it today and it sounds great (well half of it did). Credit to the seller he did mention that the preamp valve needed replacing. So i took a spare 12ax7 valve with me to try that. Sadly it was unsuccessful and did not light up. That means the “Dirt” channel on the amp does not work, at all. And when you send the full signal via the valve the amp went silent. The clean Solid State side of the amp worked perfectly. Has anybody had an experience with this or any other hybrid amps and the preamp valve playing up? And more importantly how much it cost to fix the issue? I really love the amp and its defiantly the sort of sound I’d like. However I don’t know how comfortable Iam taking the risk and getting it, only to be slapped with a big repair bill. Any advice would be highly appreciated!
