  1. Just a thought - if you added an MBX cab you'd have a 2x12 and maybe no need for a 2 x 10 ? This is an excellent little set up - use it myself for pub gigs. Surprisingly I find I have plenty of power. OK I guess unless you have to compete with a loudish drummer and /or guitarist.

Did sir receive my two PM's ? Dont seem to have had any replies yet. :)

  3. I've reluctantly decided to part with my PJB suitcase and cab ( called together a Bitchcase) . My duo gigs only need a microcombo, so this bigger rig never gets an outing. It's been sat in my bedroom but getting sadly underused except for a bit of personal practice.

Suitcase combo is in pristine condition, cab has a couple of small marks. For those who dont know Phil Jones gear, it is superbly built, very high end, and expensive. As well as looking classy, this rig is versatile, portable and articulate :

    - The two cabs fit easily in the boot/back of a car.
    - The amp has two independent channels, each with its own separate graphic EQ. This means you can set up two basses on stage, adjusting each to taste before the gig. Useful if you need both fretted and fretless basses, or a passive and or a 4 and a 5-string. You dont have to use this feature though, it sounds pretty good with just one bass.
    - This rig gives me the clearest sound I have ever heard from a bass amp . I've used many amps in my time (GK, Eden, Markbass, Orange etc.) but the clarity from this is phenomenal. Id keep it, if I had the space.

Heres some propaganda from the PJB site and some pics

[i]This has to be one of the highest spec ranges of amps on the market; I can readily see why this is regarded as a connoisseur’s amp. It’s bomb-proof in construction, has uniquely pure sound that will transform the sound of any bass put through it, and it provides everything the gigging player will want in terms of quality, reliability and sound. Totally silent and pure in operation, the no compromise hi-fi approach really works beautifully. For what it offers, the price is simply unbeatable (there’s a lot of higher priced amps that cannot match the suitcase for performance) and once you’ve tried one you will never look back.

Thanks for your interest folks! There will be plenty of others coming along, they regularly do. Just not as nice as this one... :)[/quote]

    Excellent decision !

  5. Advertising this for my good friend Rick. Its in excellent condition : he bought it new in the 80's. It plays well - Ive tried it - nice straight neck. The bass is in Nottingham.

    £100 + p&p

  6. Well, many thanks for all the ideas, and I hope the thread is useful to others in the same situation. I'll go back to my LMII and Aggie GS112 and listen again before trying out some of the other suggestions. Some folk like high clarity in their sound ( the Phil Jones does this is spades) but I guess I'm looking for the the rig to colour the sound to make it warm.

Two aspects not considered here is (i) the bass itself - the P bass gives the softest, the G&L L2000 the grindiest and the Epic the clearest sound... and (ii) the strings which can make a big difference - I use stadium elites

I might just pop a similar thread in the other forum sections for advice on these

Thanks again for all your help folks.

  7. Hi folks,

I'm searching for warm vintage pure tones with a bit of punch for a folkish/countryband Ive joined..My trusty GK microbass does nicely for small sessions, but the bigger gigs are a problem. Like many, I want to go lightweight. (The best rig ever was a Mesa 400+ with a 2x15. However, I almost slipped a disc carrying the damn things, so I probably have to avoid pure valve amps.)

I've tried several bass/amp/cab combinations but the lightweight modern amps/cabs just dont do it. Even fiddling with the EQ, they seem too clear, rather 'hard' and sometimes harsh, and they dont have the warmth. Ive tried combinations of Markbass LMII, + 210HT, Phil Jones suitacse + 4B, and hooked in an Aguilar GS112 to both amps. The LMII/Aguilar combination wasnt bad but lacked some clarity . Tried an Ashdown Mag 300 115 which seemed good. A Schoeder 1210 was just too damn loud ! Then, on Saturday night I heard this guy using a Trace head SP12(?) with a Aguilar GS112 and a Yamaha TRB5P bass.....and he had it.....the sound was well defined, cut through but was rich and warm......wow

Where should I go ? I have thought to

    - Take a better course in EQ setting ?
    - Bigger GK head ?
    - Older head/combo ?
    - Ashdown ?
    - Should I go for 15" or perhaps Aguilar DB112 as speakers?
    - Avoid neo speakers ?
    - Try a new bass (present basses are a P bass(rosewood neck), G&L L2000 and occasionally an alembic epic).

Does anyone have any recommendations please..............?

  8. Being nearby, I popped around last night and tried this out. Slazman kindly allowed me to compare it against my LMII/ Aguilar GS112 combination.

The immediate impression was that the Schroeder 1212L was so much more open and 'airy' than the Aggie, and it accurately reproduced the individual sounds of several different basses in spades. The cab had plenty of immediacy, presence and tons of bottom end, even when isolated from the floor. It dcertainly made its presence felt as well as heard.

    A phenomonal cab sonically.

It was also an easy carry - those neos make it as light (if not lighter )than my 1 x 12 Aggie. The only reason I didnt buy it on the spot was it was perhaps just a bit too loud for the duo work I do.

For a use with a rock band with a drummer I wouldnt have hesitated

    Excellent price too
