1. Thanks for showing interest! Glad you like it I've mostly been carving away at the neck, taking it slow. Working with the wenge veneers around the neck/body transition has been a bit tricky with the wenge splintering every chance it gets. If i was picking out veneers for something like this again I'd be staying away from wenge... It's getting there though... PICS! Also inlayed the 12th fret marker. It turned out alright I think, though it looks better up close than from a distance... I'll probably put a few coats of danish oil on the FB, Im hoping that will make it a bit more distinctive. Thanks for looking!
2. Well, that didnt turn out at all like the original plan.. after som recording, banging my head against a wall and deleting everything I opted to just sit down and record something and hope for a flow to set in. It did, sort of, though the track is a bit of a mess (which makes sense with the storm theme)... we'll see if I can resist the urge to go back and rearrange it after a few days, but I really need to focus on school stuff now! https://soundcloud.com/organicpulseensemble/storm-chasers-lament
3.
Coming along very nicely - I'd say the saddles will work well as long as the holes the screws thread into are tapped suitibly (I assume you've got some more ovankol or rosewood to make more if things don't turn out perfect the first time!).
Yes im a off cuts hoarder so theres plenty of potential saddles where these came from thanks for looking!
4. Some more progress. Fitted the control cavity cover, carved the body some more, carved the neck some more, made som wooden saddles for my bridge (if these will work I'm not sure but I figured I'd give it a shot).
5.
Looks like mahogany to me
Yeah im pretty much set on it being sapele mahogany, thanks for helping out 👍
6. All good suggestions but im unable to say for sure, sapele might get close with a comparative google search... I found some pics of some snakewood thats reasonably close also
7.
I love posts like this. Brilliant. Envious and inspired! Really looking forward to following this.
Thanks for that, glad you like it
8. I went to the flea market today and picked up a set of used thomastik spirocore upright bass strings and a piece of hardwood in the form of a primitive cd shelf. It looks kind of cool, will probably try using it for some neck laminates but I have no idea what it is, thought one of you might know? Any ideas? Ps. sorry if this is the wrong forum for this sort of thing
9. started some work on the back/neck. You can see I've lighly started shaping the neck, not quite sure where the veneer layers will end up yet but will probably sand them back quite a bit still... also in this picture, a rough routing in pursuit of a smooth body/neck transistion. And here it is after the orbital sander... still some work left but I'll leave it like this for now.
10. Did a bit of routing and glueing in the days past. One wing control cavity... im a very sloppy routerer, rarely taking my time to make a functioning jig/template.. hopefully i will learn with time. ... and a cavity cover... ... and heres the whole thing in front of a 34'' bass to show of its petiteness... Thats all for now. Whats next? Neck carve?
11. Thanks all, ive not routed into the floor as of yet
12. I had the same issue a few weeks back and it was my bank that had changed procedures for card purchases, i had to "open" my card every time i wanted to use paypal
13.
Lacks cowbell ...
I knew id forgotten something... Might have to alter it now Thanks
14. Heres mine https://soundcloud.c...-release-breeze Its a bit rough around the edges but since its the first track ive made in over a year and half I'll take what i can get. I imagine its about standing up there feelin the suspense, then the release of the drop and then swimming around takin it breezy... and in the end climbing up and doing it again. Yeah. Oh and as I dont have a drum kit I had to make do, playing a gong with a chopstick made for an alright ride and the touristy conga that usually functions as my nightstand became a kick drum when played with a tea-ball
15. So progress has been slow lately, but I got a few hours in today, mainly spent them doing boring stuff like making sure stuff is flat... but also started making a wooden bridge (with standard fender type saddles). Here are som pics! my drilling was less than perfect.. but it works I managed to align the saddles a little better after taking this pic This is where its gonna sit... but as you can see its still a bit chunky. Im gonna slim it down some more. Hopefully inspiration will be plentyful as we move into brighter days. Thanks for looking!
16. While a great disco band, their early funk days are often skipped over. Here are a few gems https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEvrwNofxyI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaIMHc451xQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMzcJLvfsh4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLWM1wuGFjI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBq1T3IqlYM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RwuBRumq_k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSpvY9K5STE Maurice white was also part of a soul/jazz outfit called The Pharaohs, but departed before they recorded their first album, White hired a large chunk of the pharaohs horn section for earth wind and fire after the pharaohs had disbanded. Heres a track by them as a bonus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqRUIPZga5s
17. Whenever Betty Davis comes up I also think about Camille yarbrough. Even more forgotten, released just the sole album which is a bit more low key than Betty Davis but pretty funky none the less. https://youtu.be/haFh_VkEhpM
18. Further history lesson - Betty was the wife of Miles Davis for about a year, i think it was
19. Very nice work, thats one eye-catching bass!
