1. Thanks all for the pointers, I'll take a look at all the links and get those books on order too and start going through everything this weekend. Should keep me busy.
Never mind all that, anyone who has Richard for an avatar is cool as feck before a bass guitar is even picked up!! For Pony!! geekmode *off*
You all saw it! That orphanage attached me!
2. I'm still a newbie at Bass (after being a refugee from the guitar) and currently my lessons consist of using songs to learn techniques rhythm and timing. That's all going great but I feel I need to augment that with something theory based. What I am looking for more specifically is to understand music theory as it relates to playing the bass, how to play off the drummer, what makes a good bassline (and more importantly why) & how to write music in general. Additionally I play a 5 and basically everything I play only requires a four so anything I learn I want to be easily transferable to a 5 (or a 6). Sorry if I missed something obvious on these forums or else where but my GoogleFu failed me.
3. Thanks everyone for the kind words, it's definitely a great starting point. They had some of the other Dingwall basses in all of which looked fantastic, but so far out of my price range....for now!
4. So after being a Guitar player for many years I've decided to take bass more seriously. So on Saturday I braved the torrential downpour to venture down to Bass Direct in Warwick. I had a great couple of hours trying out basses and talking about the music business and playing in general with Mark and one other customer. On a side note I thoroughly recommend a trip to Bass Direct if you need anything bass related. I went in with the idea of getting a Spector Rebop 5, I tried a few others including a Warwick Corvette Pro 5, an MTD of some description & finally a Dingwall Combustion. After a fierce battle the Dingwall won out over the MTD by a small margin and I took her home, a gorgeous 5er in Trans White on an Ash body. I've played it a fair bit since Saturday and I'm really enjoying the bass so this time I think I'm hooked and I'm going to stick with playing Bass
5. Absolutely gorgeous basses all of them. I've always loved Music Mans (hence why my first bass was an OLP Stingray) and would love to have a collection like yours at some point. Although I am tempted by the bongo, but no music stores in the area seem to even stock Music Man instruments. Anyway dude enjoy your basses!
6. That's a lovely bass. I always loved vintage Fenders but I'm not quite sure why? But anyway, thats a lovely Jazz and I hope you're enjoying it!
7. Thanks for all the replies so far guys they have been great. The link stevie provided seems pretty good, just need some spare time to give it a look over. And yes Doctor you hit it on the head, thats exactly hat i mena! It looks like I have a lot of work to do... ...well no time like the present to start!
8. I've been thinking a lot recently about expanding my knowledge, and it seems that being able to read bass clef (and treble clef to an extent) is important so I thought I would start there! Now I have a fundamental knowledge of where all the notes are on the staves themselves but I realised I'm not too sure how to transfer this to bass. What I mean is if I'm reading an E on my sheet music, how do I know which E this is on my bass? I have looked on the net for the answers (including doing a search here) and can't really find what I'm looking for. Can anyone recommend any good websites or books that would help me out with this?
9.
Yeah....that guy is pretty awesome. I'm from the US so I can't really tell, please excuse my ignorance, but is he from Scotland or Ireland? Sorry, I don't hear Scottish or Irish accents a lot.
He's from Belfast, Ireland. And yes he is great and has helped me out a lot playing wise.
10. I think I've seen the advert for it 2 or 3 years running so it is more than likely an annual thing they do. Infact I may find myself on this next year it sounds great fun and would be very handy indeed.
11. Hmmmm it's certainly an interesting idea. I have Marshall JCM900 100watt half stack in my bedroom but have yet to test it out on my bass...... If it sounds any good I may just keep it instead of selling it like I was planning to. Hopefully I'll get chance to see how it sounds this weekend and I'll report back.
12. Just taken a look at that Bass and wow that is very nice. I've just registered for an account on the Dean forum with the intention of putting my name down for one. As long as it does run at the expected £400-£500 I think my bank account won't suffer too much as well.
13. Also doesn't Sheehan himself use Rotosound Swing Bass strings?
14. Just checked out the song on your MySpace and I have to say it is recorder beautifully in my opinion! I'd even go as far as saying its better than some 'professional' recordings I've heard! Everything seems well defined and sits exactly right in the mix which I think can be a difficult thing to achieve at times. I don't think you need to doubt yourself Lateralus as you have done yourself and your band very proud I think
15.
you can get car sprays for halfords that are a similar colour to lake placid blue, and ice blue mettalic, well, lots of metallic blues (or at least in the halfords near me). i was looking and imagining the other day when i was in there. and i know car sprays are the same as what they use for guitar finishes (or at least - i know you get a good end result when using car sprays, so im guessing thats what they use)
Aha yes I can't seem to find LPB for sale on the net anywhere, so Halfords is indeed a great idea! Infact I won't be far from one at all tomorrow so I'll take a look to see if I can get a close or even exact match. I definitely think LPB with matching headstock would look great on this one with a white pickguard.
16.
It would look nice i think, but i like coffee table basses May be a little hard though for what i can assume is your first build?
Yes this is my first build I have been reading a lot today about Fender colours, and in particular the custom colours such as LPB and CAR both of which are very appealing and great candidates to be chosen. I'll probably make the colour decision at work tomorrow when I have some free time, that way I'll have had plenty of time to mull it over!
17.
Maybe get hold of a maple veneer or something? That could be nice, then do a trans finish.
Hmmmm I have managaed to find some cheap veneers available, but it makes me wonder if its worth having something like that with a scratchplate? Maybe I'll stick to a solid colour this time around and use a veneer on the next one for a nice Trans Blue or something. Oh and thanks for the Link BigRedX ill taker a look at what they have, might inspire to finally decide ona colour!
18.
Go for a trans finish maybe? Trans blue would be cool.
I do like Trans finsihes but basswood isnt very "pretty" so I think its better to stick to a solid colour. I quite like both Surf green and Lake Placid Blue, so I think it may come down to a toss up between those! I have been looking at suppliers for paint for use on this project and am unable to find certain colours available from seelers in this country. I can find surf green fine but when i try looking for LPB or CAR I have no luck what so ever. Does anyone know anyone who supplies these colours?
19. As some of you guys may know from my other thread I have purchased a P-Bass kit from Ebay. Now the kit has finally arrived I can start work on it. I plan on using most of the parts the kit comes with apart from probably better quality pots, jack and straplocks which I already have. I may also get a better bridge if I can, possibly a gotoh 201b to keep costs down. But first of all the unfinished basswood body needs finishing as basswood is so un-impressive with a natural or Trans finish. I was thinking of a solid colour but was unsure as to what colour I should go for. So onto my first question: What colour do you think I should go for, and should I do a matching headstock? Also does anyone have any links with step by step quides maybe on how to paint a solid colour onto a bass/guitar?
20.
You shouldn't feel like that. Unfortunately it's a common error a bit like the difference between lend and borrow.
I feel exactly the same way you do about the difference between lend and borrow. A simple thing that truly escapes most people. I will endeavour from now on to remember about input/output jacks too!
21.
Just being my usual pedantic self but basses don't have "Input Jacks". The signal is generated in the bass and leaves via the "Output Jack". Amplifiers have "Input Jacks"
You are totally right and now I definitely feel stupid Ah well we all make mistakes!
22. Thanks for the informative reply bnt! Its always nice to know what does what Just ordering a Switchcraft Mono jack now for the project I'm starting as well as some pots.
23. Thats a great song you guys have got up on your My Space page! Very The Who like others have mentioned but not too like The Who as you still manage to maintain your own identity. Overall a fantastic band IMHO. And as for the bass playing? I thought it was excellent playing with a brilliant tone. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
24. Hi Guys, I have a very noobish question now which I think will give some of you a good chuckle. I am building a parts P-Bass and wondered what is the difference between mono and stereo input jacks? It may seem stupid but I don't remember being told/reading about it anywhere before. Also whilst I'm here what value pots (potentiometers) do you need for the volume and tone controls for a passive P-Bass? I know the values for guitar but not bass.... Any help greatly appreciated!
25. Thanks for all the help so far guys. I actually went ahead and bought the kit that Neepheid linked, but with the intent of using some slightly better parts in place (thinking of bridge and pickups at the moment). So I'll soon post this in the Build Diary section when i receive my kit. Have no idea what colour im gonna finish it and whether I will stick with the supplied PG or not. I think after this I will use a real F body and maybe a Warmoth neck or something, but this will do me for the tinme being. So thanks guys but I'm sure I will be bugging you all again (especially when it comes to the actualy process of refinishing the body)!
