1.
Ooh... harsh break! Having said that, I can't imagine an act that Bellowhead couldn't follow in that genre. I loved Nancy Kerr's bassist, he held it all together beautifully.
Yeah. He had a lovely touch. I was quite far back and the video screen didn't really focus on him. Was that a Stingray?
2. Did anyone go to this? I wasn't gigging as I first thought, (assumed), I was at Folk By The Oak. Was it good?
3. Yeah I thought the running order on the main stage had been well thought out. Each act got progressively better, although maybe The Keston Cobblers Club & Nancy Kerr could have been interchanged, until MCC came on and then she brought it right down. But she was the big star of the day I suppose. At least Bellowhead didn't have a difficult act to follow. If you remember last year poor old Seth Lakeman had to follow Richard Thompson...at a folk festival! Now thats a tough gig.
4. I have just copy & pasted the ad I put on Gumtree so ignore the hyperbole used for a non-bass player site... Three quality bass cabs for sale. All of these cabs have been gigged but each one is in excellent condition. They are... An Ampeg Classic SVT-15E. 1x15 speaker. 200w RMS. 8 Ohms. See Ampeg site for full technical spec. As it's title suggests this is a classic 1x15 cab from arguably the most sought after name in bass amplification. £200 http://www.ampeg.com...classic/svt15e/ A MarkBass Traveller 102P. 2x10 speakers. 400w RMS. Piezo Tweeter. Rear ported, 33lbs/15kg. See MarkBass site for full technical spec. This is , unsurprisingly, an award winning cab. The power handling and response from such a small and light cab is just phenomenal. £200 http://www.markbass....etail.php?id=37 SOLD A MarkBass Standard 104HR. 4x10 speakers. 800w RMS. 1" compression driver with custom horn. Rear ported. 56lbs/25.4kg. See MarkBass site for full technical spec. It's power handling and response allied to it's weight and portability makes this a very difficult cab to beat. £350 http://www.markbass....etail.php?id=29 SOLD All of these cabs are offered individually however should you buy any 2 I will reduce the combined price by £50. If you buy all three I will reduce the combined price by £100. I am based in Canterbury in Kent and these items are available for collection only. Any shipping would be arranged and paid for by the purchaser. I am willing to discuss meeting at a mid point to effect the sale. I have four other ads up at the moment and have used up my quota of MB and can't put up any more pics, or if I can I'm not sure how. I do have pics of each of these cabs and will happily email them to anyone who asks
5. Slightly off topic but.... If you play in a band that is not 'mainstream', in as much as it doesn't do familiar covers, then you can always approach venues and offer to gig early in the week for nothing to get your foot in the door. If you get a Tuesday night gig at a recognised venue and garner your support, (friends & family etc), then it vastly increases your chances of getting a gig not only at that venue but other venues on the manor via word of mouth...assuming you do a good gig. Yes there will always be venues/landlords who won't acknowledge the 'loss leader' concept and expect you to also play a Friday night for free or very little but that's just a negotiation. At least they are offering you a gig. The fact is that if you play in a band that is considered in any way 'inaccessible' by local venues you are going to have to work that much harder.
6. Lady Elenore by Lindisfarne and How Come by Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance. These are always well received. We play these in my three piece acoustic folk-rock/americana band. I would have to acknowledge that we do tend to play to an audience of a certain age. Rod's Mandolin Wind is another one.
7.
Good point about landlords who generally know f*ck all about music.
They may well know f*ck all about music but generally they know a great deal about making money. Most of them don't care what kind of music you play or even the level of ability of the band collectively or individually. All they are interested in is your potential to draw a crowd. Not getting your head around this concept is likely to be a big disadvantage.
8.
An interesting point's being made here about seemingly 'obscure' songs replacing the coma-inducing 'Sex On Fire' etc. A bit of a change doesn't have to mean obscure. There's a thousand songs out there that punters know that just never get played.
I wholeheartedly agree as per my original reply to this post.
9.
Love MCC's music.
Sadly she was very disappointing again. I last saw her at the Albert Hall where she did the big orchestral thing which was very drab and a bit pretentious really. It was also bloody expensive! She seems to want to do all of her slow numbers and then slow them down even more. On Sunday she even did Passionate Kisses as a ballad! I've seen her about half a dozen times over the last 25 years and I doubt I will bother again. Not having a rhythm section this time didn't help but at least she had the ever present and very wonderful John Carol on piano.
10. I've always maintained that there are really only two sorts of pub bands. One that tries to entertain the as many of the punters as possible which invariably means doing a lot of lowest common denominator material and the other sort that says 'This is what we do like it or not'. The reality is that you are likely to get more gigs and more regular punters with then first than the second, not always but mostly. I have played in covers bands for most of my life and what is very rewarding is when you start to play a song and hear people say...' I haven't heard this in years' but trying to find popular songs not often played by other covers bands is of course the difficult part.
11. Did anyone else go to the FBTO festival yesterday? My second year and it really is a pleasant day out particularly as the weather was fine all day. Not sure about the music this year though despite there being some big names from the folk & country circuit...Mary Chapin Carpenter, ( three piece with no rhythm section), Bellowhead and Unthanks. Best band was the Moulettes on the Acorn stage. Check them out they are kind of psychedelic folk !
12.
A fine, fine instrument that I have had the pleasure of playing in the past. Get in quick, this is a top notch bass and a bargain.
Ta!
13. 1983 Fender Precision. Tobacco sunburst. I'm pretty sure it's a 50's re-issue. Not really sure what I can say about a P apart from see pics. Yes it's tatty but I will replace the pots before sale and give it a general overhaul. I'm not overly fussed about selling this bass but I would be interested in a swap/ part ex for a Precision with a rosewood fingerboard. Not offered with case. This bass is for collection only. If you want to arrange and pay for shipping then fair enough. Depending on distances involved I would be willing to discuss meeting at a halfway point to complete the deal. For some reason it has only allowed me to upload 3 pics. Maybe it's because I've put up 4 different ads so far. If you want to see more just contact me and I will send.
14. Sandberg California JM although they were subsequently re-branded as TM. Bought from new at the guitar show in Birmingham about 6 years ago. It's basically a super Jazz. For what all the controls do and what the various tonal options are I would strongly suggest that you watch this video on Youtube...https://www.youtube....h?v=cyTLOktzDRg This bass has hardly been played and again is in immaculate condition. See pics...very pretty. This bass is not offered with a case and is for collection only. If you want to organise and pay for shipping then fair enough. Depending on distances involved I may be willing to discuss meeting at a halfway point to complete the deal.
15.
The pics look fine to me. Pleased to see you got one ad up ok. GLWTS
Two now actually. It's a real relief . I was thrown out of the Luddites for being too technophobic you know. Cheers!
16. Bernie Goodfellow handmade boutique bass. I had it made in 2000 so just one owner. Swamp ash with maple neck & fretboard. All the usual GB bells and whistles but I did go for the extra piezo pickup under the bridge. I won't bore you with the usual superlatives just see the pics. One anomaly; I originally had it made with gold hardware but once it was finished I changed my mind and went for black however the strap buttons were overlooked in this process. The bass is offered with a custom case. The history of this bass is that I was made redundant and had a fairly big wad of cash burning a hole in my pocket so I decided to go for a boutique bass. To be honest it was a bit of a folly on my part. This is a highly sophisticated instrument and I am essentially a Precision man. The result is that I doubt I have gigged this bass more than a dozen times and it has sat in it's case for far too long. It is, as a consequence, in immaculate condition. This bass is for collection only. If you want to organise and pay for shipping then fair enough. Depending on the distances involved I would be willing to discuss meeting at a halfway point to complete the deal. I will listen to sensible offers but if I don't get any it will go back in the cupboard accumulating value. Finally...despite what is shown in some of the pics this bass does not come with dog.
17. 1976 US Fender Jazz Bass. Black on Black. Maple Neck with dark, (not sure what), fingerboard and block inlays. Typically this bass has the 70's 3 screw neck-plate but there is no problem at all with intonation or tuning. Generally in very good condition but with a few nicks, dings and the marbling you might expect on a well gigged 40 year old instrument, (see pics). Plays really well, just a classic Jazz really. Not sure what the body is but it is heavy although this 55 year old can play it comfortably through an entire gig but I would recommend a 'comfort strap'. No case offered with this bass. This bass is for collection only. If you want to organise and pay for shipping then fair enough. Depending on distances involved I would be willing to discuss meeting at a halfway point. I will listen to sensible offers but I am aware that 70's Jazz basses are going for well in excess of £2K in Vintage & Rare and the Bass Gallery etc. Finally...hands up to be the world's crapest photographer. If you want more pics just ask. If you want better pics I'll see what I can do.
18. Just looked it up on Youtube...just a riff really but ok https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR36mm4oSM8
19.
I'm going to stand my ground with Crazy Horses. Along with Run Run Run by Jo Jo Gunne is was as heavy as anything in the charts that year - and yes, I suppose you could argue that it was rendered null and void by Little Jimmy Osmond's effort that year, but, yeah, I'm standing by Crazy Horses!!
I couldn't agree more. Crazy Horses is a great song. I'm pretty sure Alex Harvey used to a version of it live, but then he used to do a version of Goodnight Irene as well; a true rock n' roll eccentric. When I was in a NWOBHM, (remember that?), band in the late 70's we used to do an Osmond's song called 'Life Is Hard Enough Without Goodbyes'. We dropped it because we got so much stick for it. I can't really remember that much about the song but it must have been pretty rocky for us to do it.
20.
Is there no option to pay as a guest using Paypal (without signing up for it) ?
Not unless I'm mis-reading it again. Anyway thanks to Douglas, (Dad3353), I've managed to reset PayPal password and pay my subscription.
21. So as a postscript to this I tried to pay my £20 annual subscription and the only way you can do this is via PayPal. So, I go through the screen filling in all the fields and at the end it tells me I'm trying to use an existing card number with a different password. It then occurs to me that I did indeed set up a Paypal account some 8 or so years ago and I'm pretty sure I did it in order to buy the bass, (from Ebay), that I am now trying to sell. Can I remember the password? Can I buggery! I find this sort of thing so utterly deflating and depressing.
