1.
best way to deal with trolls is to ignore them or agree with them, they're just looking for an argument
Same with idiots who snipe from the sidelines.
 2.
And that's how two or three individuals derail a really good thread, and turn it into a mud slinging contest... Nice one chaps...
Well I'm glad you enjoyed it mate
 3.
Where, precisely, did I or anyone else say that? I would share my interpretation if I wanted. I didn't ask you to respond it, and I couldn't give a monkeys if you're interested in it or not. Well with the best will in the world, I'm not a mindreader so I can't tell you exactly what he meant. As I said, I've got my own interpretation and it is precisely that -- mine. As far as I am aware, I'm under no obligation to voice it. Still can't work out why you're so defensive about it, especially when nobody else seems to have taken the same umbrage. Totally bored with this now.
Mate! I quite agree that you are under no obligation to share your interpretation but but if you are not going to then don't refer to it. Secondly because I disagree with something does not make me defensive it simply puts me in a contrary position. Neither have I taken umbrage because, and here at least I do agree with you, I am not particularly concerned if people disagree with opinions or simply don't like them. If you are that bored with this then let it go and don't say another word but if you do know that I will respond.
 4.
This is quite an interesting thread without this, could you guys get a room?
Mate I got bored with this hours ago but if anyone wants to address a point to me then you can guarantee that I am going to respond.
 5.
Well for starters, there is nothing whatsoever to suggest that he was speaking to you specifically, given that he didn't quote you and his post did not follow one of yours. As for precisely what he was saying... well I know what my interpretation is, but why don't you ask him? This is quickly becoming ridiculous.
So unless someone specifically addresses a comment toward me or they quote a previous post of mine I am not allowed to respond ? As for your interpretation of what he meant, if you're not going to share it then how can anyone even be interested, never mind respond. And I responded to his assertion that people who play in standard covers band put no thought or effort into what they do and he hasn't responded but you did.
 6.
That's not what he said at all. From what I can see, nobody has accused you of that or anything like it. Why so defensive?
Then what is he saying exactly?
 7.
+! At least bordering on rude.
As I said previously I don't agree that I was in any way rude. Condescending...having or showing an attitude of patronizing superiority...I stand by this Pompous ...affectedly grand, solemn, or self-important....I stand by this Twaddle....trivial or foolish speech or writing; nonsense....Istand by this I maintain I was simply being candid. I will accept unpleasant and/or unpalatable but not rude.
 8.
Please do stop playing them....
Well I'm afraid that it is unlikely that I will be able to in the immediate future as I have rent to pay. That said as tedious as the thought of these types of numbers may be I have to say that once we start them and the punters stream onto the floor it is a real buzz to watch people enjoying themselves to music that you are playing. It's the reason I started playing music in the first place.
 9.
I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
You're not a lawyer or politician or human resources person in your day job are you?
 10.
Back when I used to play in rock bands, the drummer and I were putting together a covers band as a side project to our originals band. At about the time we were putting together the set list I was walking down the high street one Sunday afternoon, past about 4 or 5 pubs, all of which had bands on and all of which were playing 'Wishing Well' as I passed by. At that point I decided that we weren't going to play the same stuff that everyone plays, or if we did, it would be in a very different style (ska-punk version of Beautiful by Christine Aguliera (sp?), breakbeat version of Seven Nation Army etc.). we did quite well out of it, even though half the set was made up of obscure album tracks rather than singles. So, I suppose I'm saying that you don't have to play 'what the people want' - if you put some thought and effort in you can give people something they never thought they'd enjoy.
So what your saying is that for the past 30 years or so I've put no thought or effort into what I've been doing on most Friday and Saturday nights?
 11.
I'm reminded of my old band The Premature Ejaculators. The music was raucous, and the lyrics were far too offensive to be enjoyed by anyone civilised, and yet whenever we played, we went down a storm. The only cover was "love comes in spurts" ...So I think Bilbo is right in that people ARE ready to experience something different, you just have to do it in the right way. Maybe it's just easier to engage people if you're playing the radio 2 playlist?
So we can all stop playing Mustang Sally, Brown Eyed Girl, Summertime , Autumn Leaves etc and still get regular work? Yippee! I wish I had known this years ago.
 12.
I have put on more weight. Seriously, though, I have no idea what you are talking about in terms of deleting posts in my 'God, I Love Jazz' thread. I have never been aware of any shenanighans on there that required any deletions and I certainly can't remember doing it (also, I cannot delete accounts; that's well above my pay grade). I am really not that easily offended (pompous and condescending I can take, but TWADDLE?!!!). And, tauzero, re: dancing to 7:4; there are more ways to enjoy a gig than dancing and I suspect (although I have no evidence for this) that, overall, more people DON'T dance at gigs than do. There are also other varables. Having done many wedding/party gigs with the same band, I am often amazed at the way in which the same songs/set can get everyone dancing at one gig and hardly anyone dancing at the next.
1. I notice that there is no denial that I was thrown off the thread. 2. I never said that my account was deleted. 3. The old ' I can't remember' is not the same as this definitely did or did not happen.
 13.
"...individual" implies you'd rather post an insult, which is rude Anyway, I play in an original folk(ish) band. We're not doing so many pubs now but we did for the last year or two. We never had a problem entertaining a pub packed with drinkers. I'm sure they'd normally be getting their "sex on fire" etc but as long as you put on a good show and engage with the audience, they will go with you IME
Using 'individual' shows I am making a concerted effort not to be rude.
 14.
1. Unnecessarily harsh. By all means challenge, but there's no need to be rude. 2. With all due respect, you've been here for 19 days. How can you have 'come to expect' anything?
1. I don't agree that it was in anyway rude. Vehement yes. Rude no 2. I was on this site before and on a thread started by this same individual entitled something like 'Isn't Jazz wonderful' I raised some points, these points were countered and I re-countered and so on as is the point of these boards. However, despite not using any bad language or being in anyway abusive, I was not only thrown off the thread but, as other contributors told me, also all of my comments were deleted from the thread. That is not just censorship that is abuse of power by a moderator. So that is why I expect his attitude. That and the fact that since I've come back he doesn't appear to have changed at all.
 15.
I run a Jazz gig Best audience reaction ever was Mammal Hands; a three piece sax/keys/drum trio doing totally original material most of which was not in 4:4 or 3:4. Worst audience reaction - perfectly competent girl singer doing the great American songbook. I think there is a lot of lazy thinking on here; tediously conservative (small c). Giving the audience who are there what they want may be udnermining your ability to attract many more punters who want something else. Most people I know would not more go and watch a 'default' covers band than they would a free form Jazz gig. Give them something that they will like but surprise them at the same time.
The usual pompous, condescending twaddle we've come to expect from this...individual.
 16.
I don't know sorry, I think they're a bit "before my time". I watched one song then f***ed off. It's not my kind of music but each to their own
Fair enough.
 17.
Middlewich FAB Festival. It's a fairly local festival but pulls quite a crowd. They had us on again this year with Lindisfarne as the headline. Not my cup of tea!
Which line up of Lindisfarne was it do you remember? Was it Ray Jackson's? He was the original mandolin and harmonica player. There is also Ray Laidlaw's Lindisfarne. Actually it doesn't really matter as neither is half as good as when Alan Hull was alive. I keep saying I'm a Lindisfarne fan but the reality is that I'm a massive fan of the Fog On The Tyne album. A masterpiece IMO
 18.
Is the MarkBass 4 or 8 ohm? Thanks
They are both 8 Ohms
 19.
We used to stick an acapella bit in, would get a good singalong response from the right crowd.
Lol acapella sections are a bit of a trademark of any band I'm in.
 20.
My last band used to do How Come, along with McGuiness Flint's When I'm Dead and Gone (save the singer swapping from guitar to mandolin too often)!
We do Malt & Barley Blues by Mc Flint and I am pushing to get When I'm Dead and Gone into the set
 21. Aha! Sanity intact if memory a bit shaky. Who are you again?
 22. O
I wasn't even drinking, and it's still a blur to me. I spent most of the day chasing the twins around, and caught a bit of music when I could! I'm sure photographic clarification will be available soon.
One of the few benefits of getting old is not having to worry about the kids . Good luck with that
 23. Now that's a possibility actually. I am certain that I saw an electric bass on stage but given my age and the amount of Fanny Ebbs I consumed it is possible that I got the acts mixed up.
 24.
Lol. He might have done, I was only down the front for half the set before I was required back for parenting duties. I only saw the upright.
You've got me doubting my sanity now and am desperately searching the web for pics but that said I remember thinking...'Ah ! The first electric bass of the day'. The only electric bass of the day on the main stage as it turned out.
 25.
Crikey, you were far back! If it was a Stingray it was a very big one, and acoustic, and fretless, with f holes and a scroll top!
I'm pretty sure he played an electric for a couple of numbers
