1. After some research I bought SM57 for recording my bass and guitars and I am truly impressed with the results. Obviously the mic positioning deliveres different results. I'm thinking of getting AKG mic too so I can capture both low ends and highs of the bass. I tried mic and di but regardless how much pro producers swear by it, I had not had good results.
What mics do you guys use for bass recording?

There are a few useful tools such as the action ruler above, there are also feeler gauges and calipers, all can be useful and worth having for various "tech stuff". However, I think you're approaching setup in the right way by setting the bass up correctly for your personal playing style and the bass itself. Everyone has their preference and the guidelines figures you may have read are just that...guidelines. They are going to change if any of the variables change, such as fret wear (or improper leveling in the first place) string gauge and playing style. So, don't sweat the numbers, if you're setting them up for yourself and they feel good to you, then good job...I'd call that efficient :).

Action rules is probably what I need

    That sounds right to me.

Watch this series of vids by John Curruthers, It explains the full process.

I have followed this in the past to set my bass up.

  4. I have set up my basses previously following this principle.
    1. Neck/ trust rod depending what strings I used
    2. Action
    3. Intonation
I always set the action by feel that seems to work for me.
Is there a more effective way to set up a bass? Any gauge measuring device I could use for action setting?

Any constructive advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
    P

    Yep

  6. Lewis is a truly genuine bloke who knows his stuff. I bought a Steve Harris P bass in Royal Blue with fitted SPB 4 from him. He chucked in new strings, set it up and added the original SPB-1. Had a nice 15 mins talk about bass gear and music. Thanks Lewis.

Ah yes, trouble is I'm going to Reading to sell a bass, which will mean I'll have quite a full wallet going in there!.....Perhaps better just drive home and pay it in the bank.....

I think I might be going there (soon) myself to get a new strap for 'my new bass' ;)

Here is my 2009 Made in Japan Steve Harris Signature Fender P-Bass in Royal Blue Metallic, a replica of the Bass Steve has played for all of Maiden's career, but it was only finished in this colour from approx 1982 for the Beast on the Road Tour, right through to the No Prayer on the Road tour in 1990 (Maiden's heyday, some would say!)

Its an amazing bass and I'm sorry to see it go but it unfortunately never gets played by me and it really deserves to be played by someone!

I've been over the Bass many times and I cant find fault with it, Chrome Scratchplate, Badass II Bridge and I added the Seymour Duncan SPB-4 Steve Harris Signature pickups pretty much as soon as they were available to buy (these weren't available when the bass came out in 2009, they actually had the SPB-1), if you've had the pleasure of trying one, you'll know how good they sound.

Only used by me at home sparingly in 7 years, never gigged even once, and has become something of an ornament now, which is a real shame for such a Bass.

This was one of the first to come into the UK and was purchased by myself in January 2009 (my local store was a Fender Dealership at the time) and will come with its padded Fender Gig bag that came with the bass when I bought it, and Fender Hang tag.

Weight of the bass is 10.2lbs

The pictures speak for themselves, the bass is in fantastic condition.

I even have the original Steve Harris signature Flatwound strings if you want them, they didn't work for me so they came off pretty quickly.

These new were Approx £1100.00+, and you obviously can't get them now, since the new MIM West Ham logo model superseded it.

I'm asking £850 o.n.o for the bass which is in pretty much as new condition, with Pickup upgrade.

Any questions, please ask by commenting or PM.

Bass is in Bridgend area of South Wales, but I can/will travel to accomodate buyer.

No trades on this one thanks gents, I'm all good for gear at the moment..

So I had a spare 5mins at work today stuck in the centre of Hanley so popped into Academy of Sound they don't have many basses usually but now and again a secondhand instrument comes in or the odd fender that's worth a look.
Strangely this time a Squire stood out from the crowd.
It was an Inca silver classic vibe with matching headstock, looked really nice good neck pocket and for the money looked like a bit of a steal?
Now I didn't have time to plug it in but does any Basschatter have any experience with theses are they worth a punt as a gigging back up as I'm tempted to go back and give it a play/maybe buy.
I own a Squire vibe jazz bass. Fantastic sound and playability. I replaced the pups with SeymourDuncan pups.Roto round wound strings.it growls like a lion.

as I stated before (in the middle of a post so easily missed) it was in a pub, in the corner of the room on a raised hard wood area, a difficult sound check with lots of hard surfaces for the sound to bounce off, then the sound altered as the room filled up
You could've chuck some people around to make it sound better.

I can see that would work really well in a full band mix and be nice and clear sounding.

That's not a laughable eq setting at all, it's the kind of setting we of the bass chat community advocate.
What works for you or for "we of the bass chat community" does not work for everyone. The OP does not state what venue the gig was at, carpet floor, pub furniture, stage layout, acoustics he. Therefore the guitarist in his band may have been correct with the settings.

I don't use Ableton; I was hoping you'd recognise what an 'Arrange' window was..! I'll have a scout around and see what I can find. Meanwhile, don't you have a manual or guide..?
    Back shortly...

    Edit...

OK, have a read of this ...

    Ableton Arrangement View ...

As always, I'd pass on the invaluable 'helpful hint': RTFM. No, seriously; it's a great short-cut, saving oodles of time in the long run.
    Hope this helps.
Haha I know what the a range arrangement view is and read the manual too. Thanks anyhoo.I always ask as it may have saved me tons of time.

Is there a menu entry for effects

Does this make sense to you..?

Ableton normalizes when it consolidates audio, but it compensates by bringing the clip volume back down. So, in the arrange window,

Right-click ---> Consolidate.

Reset the clip volume to 0 db
... and you've got a normalized piece of audio.

Give it a try; tell us how it goes, please..?
No idea where to right click. Any suggestions please

Sounds like your output levels are quite low... you may get more volume by turning up the individual tracks, but compression / limiting is likely to be needed fair soon to avoid the peaks distorting.

If Ableton can normalise (close) to 0db, that's easier.

Quite a complex subject, but reading up on mastering is probably a good start.

"loudness wars" may make interesting side-reading, too...
Individual tracks turned up.It's the final product where the volume plays up.

I'm not familiar with this software, but assuming you can't increase the volume on your final mixdown, compression and limiting could be the answer
I used compression and can increase volume but increasing volume affects clarity

  17. I have been using Ableton live lite 9 for recording. I record mic up bass amp and guitar amp.The sound is outstanding. After mixing and adding effects everything sounds to my liking but the output is weak and when I play it on my phone or car I have to almost max the volume to hear it loud enough. How do I get the output volume right like if I listened to a CD or mP3. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  18. SM 57 in front of a cab. You need to experiment with mic positioning ie place it in front of the centre of speaker, move it slightly to side towards the rim of speaker. Also the distance from speaker will give you a different sound. You can place it at an angle etc. I recorded two different guitars and effect set up. The slightest mic positioning returned different sound.unbelievable how good sm57 is.as for the bass recording I finally managed to get the sound I wanted.no wonder sm57 has been around for donkey's years.

Bass is an instrument that really benefits from compression… so in my opinion you should all be using it! :)

The confusion around compression typically stems from it being perceived as something that “squashes all of the subtlety and dynamics” out of a sound - or that it’s some kind of “cheat” that compensates for poor technique (“for me it’s all in the fingers”, etc). Both of which are missing the point.

Fact is, an electric bass is capable of throwing out a very wide range of frequencies with widely differing ‘energies’, or volumes. A compressor - if correctly used - helps to even out the signal level so that each note played by the bassist has a similar ‘volume’. This helps each note to be heard and enables the bass to sit better in the mix.

Used correctly, compression is a very creative and musical tool. It can be subtle and virtually unnoticeable - allowing plenty of room for dynamics and expression. Or it can be aggressive, pummelling the sound into all sorts of cool distortion.

I’d wager that nearly every recorded bass that we love listening to has had compression applied to it (almost certainly if it’s been recorded in a studio). It’s really not some kind of artificial ‘performance enhancer’ - it’s a necessity for achieving a great bass tone, IMO.

Me, I always record my bass dry (without any effects) and then apply compression afterwards. I don’t currently play live, but if I did I’d probably prefer to invest in my own compressor (not one of those 'one knob' pedals; a proper one with variable attack/release/ratio, etc) or have a friendly chat with the sound tech to get it set right during the warm up. Either way, I’d want compression on my bass. Period.
I agree. It's nearly impossible to play low and high end notes in fast lines with an even outputhough and post recording the sound can be even out with a little compression.
I am new to this so still experimenting before I buy one.At the moment using Red3 within DAW.
