  1. Two that stand out for me:

Herbie Hancock in 2005 at The Barbican. Both him and his band were unreal! I don't know the name of the bassist but he was all over the double bass and a 6 string bass guitar like it was nothing - he may as well have been playing a ukulele. Both his superhuman musicality and physical endurance left me awestruck. Also the drummer looked about 14 - hilariously, and was also a total monster on his instrument. I remember thinking how is this possible?

Secondly, Mars Volta at The Barbican in Summer 2008. The intensity and commitment of the performance and the craziness of the music was exhausting and exhilarating. Juan Alderete de la Pena holding it down on bass with class and taste throughout amidst all the Latin prog rock mayhem. Wow....just wow.

  2. Just sold an acoustic bass to Johann, this is my second time dealing with this polite and friendly gentleman and as expected the transaction was as easy and pleasant as I could have wished for. Great guy to deal with, and now the owner of the best sounding acoustic bass ever - the lucky boy! Thanks again dude! 👍

Lucky my finances have been in a mess before you withdrew, or this would be in my collection now! Beautiful bass.

Ha ha yes! I have been missing the Stingray I sold a few years back,  but basically gave up on the idea of selling some stuff to put towards getting a Stingray Special as it wouldn't have got anywhere near raising the necessary funds. They're just too damn expensive! In no way do I need another expensive bass though - I currently don't play in a band, or indeed with any other musicians at all at the moment thanks to covid. The Ibanez is staying put 👍

Here is my feedback from previous Basschat dealings for assurance of an honest transaction:

  5. I'll join in. Here's my 1997 TR200 :

I had this up for sale recently then thought better of it - which I'm glad about. Cool bass and you don't see that many about; also, I love that colour (looks even better in real life!).

Hi, I have the same set of pickups, with an Aguilar OBP3 Aguilar preamp, however I experience a great loss of  punch in the sound, I really get more punch connecting the trucks in  passively mode.  What preamp do you use?

Hi @All-X mate, I didn't change the preamp; just pickups, bridge and tuners. I drew the line at the preamp as I'd already sunk enough cash into this what with import tax and the like. My DiMarzios sound very balanced and responsive through what is an inexpensive preamp as this bass wasn't top of the TR range when available new back in '97. I can't give you any information about the stock preamp, all the mods were done by my local guitar shop. I should point out that I had the exact same set of pickups in an Aerodyne Jazz I used to own and have never experienced the problem you describe.

  7. The unfortunate flip side to the old cash on collection chestnut: I've had a couple of fairly priced basses for sale on eBay where I insisted on cash payment, and collection only. Adding those two levels of inconvenience has proven to be the best way to kill all buyer interest.

Still, I learnt the hard way once before that eBay gives completely no Fs about protecting sellers from fraudulent buyers and will always side with a buyer over a seller. Better to be safe than sorry. eBay and PayPal are literally the worst when you get screwed over. Cash is king!

The fact that this is still here tells all we need to know about the state of the market

    Good luck mate.

Thanks dude. Anyone would think a global pandemic had interfered with people's plan to spend all their disposable cash on more shiny basses. 🙄

Some Surprising names coming up in this thread! Clearly showing one mans trash is another man's treasure!

I'll play though!Adam Clayton,- made millions, dated supermodels, has more signature basses than you can shake a stick at. Plays F all on bass, that doesn't get in the way of his over ego guitarist. Man's laughing his tits off.

Peter Hook - plays bass like a guitarist and not in a good way! Gets a signature Yamaha.

    Here's one, Joe Dart!!!!

Rocco Prestia clone, anyone under 25 and addicted to youtube thinks he's a bass God,gets a signature musicman,  Hell of a right hand on him though 😁

I think Joe Dart is quite an impressive player on a technical level (and I'm a lot older than 25). I just can't stand the smugness of the guys in Vulfpeck though. It's not like they're doing anything other than recycling 70s and early 80s smooth funk jams

  10. Difficult to say as most bassists are essentially unrated. I say this as most audience members and music listeners are fairly ambivalent to the bassist in a band they're listening to, unless they are a musician and even then they might not be too bothered. As per the mainly supportive nature of our instrument's role.

Maybe Mike Dirnt fits this category?

  11. For me definitely one of the most underrated bassists of the last 15 years is Roy Mitchell Cardenas of Mutemath. Damn fine player. I tried to start a thread on Roy's playing here, not a single reply.

Very underrated and it would seem not that well known.
