I'm not all that keen on the solo but I love the song. Matt Freeman is one of my favourite bassists

I can't believe what I'm reading! Maxwell Murder, for me, is up there with the best bass solos ever. I absolutely love it 🤯

I think Flea had a lot more to do with that album than anything before or after - as in songwriting, lyrically too.

I find it’s a bit patchy and overblown at points.

Honestly, any band, anyone would’ve struggled to follow up BSSM - and as JF had so much to do with that album - it’s no surprise that it jars a little.

Indeed, they've not managed to release anything since that comes close to the brilliance of BSSM, let alone topping it.

My fave Chili Peppers album. Dark, heavy, seething with menace and lots of heavy psychedelic guitar. It's absolutely nothing like anything they've ever done before or since (aside from Aeroplane, which I can't stand). I love it - it comes from a dark place and shows it.

Seething with menace! Love that, that is a totally spot on description of that album! It's a totally unique sounding album in their back catalogue. The last three or four have sounded largely the same for me.

  4. As I mentioned previously, One Hot Minute is an album I've grown to appreciate more and more over the years. I dig the Dave Navarro era, anyone else a fan of the more rocking Navarro Chili Peppers? Also that album to me, is Kiedis's songwriting as its best. The lyrics are really memorable and coherent.

I dunno, £70k a month outgoings to an ex would spur me on to make songs happen.

And you have to admit the timing points towards money being a motivating factor. Anyhoo, there may be some great music on the rest of the album where they take some chances and bring back some of the energy of their earlier music.

  6. I have to say I'm not entirely convinced John Frusciante's heart is in this. Him rejoining for the second time after about 12 years of working on his own music - totally unlike RHCP, came very shortly after reports that he took a big financial hit with a very costly divorce settlement. All of a sudden he's back in the band. The cynic in me says he's just going to stick this out to bank the cash from an extensive tour where ticket prices are getting into Rolling Stones levels of expensiveness, and then go back to doing music he actually cares about.

  7. Musicianship aside, what kind of lyrics are these?? Absolute nonsense throughout. This is an underwhelming return but I can't say I'm surprised as this is what I've come to expect from late era Chilis based on their last couple of albums. This kind of material makes me really miss the Dave Navarro era, which I know was generally not looked upon that fondly once Frusciante came back to the band. I'm going to listen to One Hot Minute once I finish work

  8. Absolute beauty!!!!!!!!!! I have the exact same bass - same year, same finish, which I bought used last year and I can confidently say it's the best bass that I've ever owned and also ever played. These new Stingrays really are that good and I'm not alone in thinking that. The feel, playability and sound is amazing and they're so light for a Stingray that it's frankly kind of weird! @Kev shame you're selling it, whoever buys this in time is in for an amazing, next level-quality bass. So, so good. GLWTS.

Haha that wasn’t what I was expecting 😂

Who knew that NBA teams had so many high profile bassists as fans? I’d like to see Mark King perform God Save the Queen at the FA Cup final just for something a bit different.

It would be Stuart Zender playing Land of Hope and Glory at the last night of The Proms for me..😁

I quite like him, he was one of the ‘gateway’ players that got me into playing bass but is he an all time great? Possibly not.

Not keen on that national anthem though, it might have been OK without all the improvisation and shredding!

Yeah, I prefer Christian McBride's jaunty version 😉:

  11. I really like Flea but in my view this is the worst Chili Peppers song ever. It's utterly dire, devoid of originality and Tom Petty should have sued. Just to be clear if you love it, I respect your view and am happy that you get enjoyment from it. To me it represents a creative nadir for the band and signposts towards their bland late era output. No disrespect intended to the OP but there are so many better RHCP songs.

For sensitivity and tastefulness, Gary King bassist on Idris Muhammad's Power of Soul

Not strictly funk all the time but Jamaaladeen Tacuma doesn't seem to get mentioned here much and he's an amazing and unique player:

Just found another scorching Tacuma clip. Awesome grooving, and then solo from around 2 and a half minutes mark:

@MoJo buy yourself a copy of Sharon J. Butler's book 'Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome'

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Conquering-Carpal-Syndrome-Repetitive-Injuries/dp/1572240393

The exercises and stretches in this book for fingers, wrist and forearms helped me a lot with my Carpal Tunnel problems. I was made aware of it on this very forum would you believe?! The exercises aren't fun to do, but doing them regularly really sorted me (and quite a few others on here) out.
