1.
Cripes. Now we need to know how much "difficult" costs I suppose. Can a partial restoration be completed around the neck join as it is now?
No the neck needs to come off as it was so badly attempted to be repaired before. The truss rod is fine and works. The Luthier Terry is SUPERB and even though he says it will be very difficult to remove the neck without causing any damage to the finish of the guitar, I am confident that any damage (if any) will be minimal. He has stated that he could not do any repair to the finish of the guitar because of health issues, so I guess it involves chemical treatment? regardless, the important thing is that the bass plays & sounds good, I can live with any blemishes to the woodwork and I am even happy to sand it down and refinish myself... I'm basically waiting now to see what happens. I will of cause update here.
2. So, the previous person to attempt to repair this Hofner has glued the neck on with a resin and as such will be very difficult to remove now and may cause damage to the finish, or worse. Not the best news in the world.
3. Sounds like a good gig. The Hofner will do you proud. I used to use my 1978 P-Bass but that thing was so heavy, sounded great but wearing it for 2 hours was killing me, so to now have a Hofner that weighs in about the same as a pint of beer is wonderful.
4. A small update... Terry says he wants to take time with it, he wants to keep a lot of the mojo intact. and has managed to source some original plastic for the missing bits where the neck fits but he said he does not want to start replacing trim that has started to detach as it seems it has been glued back with an epoxy and could cause further damage if he tried to remove it, however he will fill the crack with a home made paste coloured to match, may be about 6 weeks to complete. The luthier is Terry Chapman https://www.tjcguitars.com/ cannot recommend him enough, he has done a lot of guitars for me and others through the studio.
5. That is correct, the neck does have binding, it is not clear in the photos. The year is almost certainly 1964.
6.
Looks very nice for its age. I am only two years older than it but I look totally knackered. I'm locked in for the follow up.
We are the same age then, June 1962, original (not reissue) bent neck but plays like a dream and have all my own teeth
7.
I used to do many tabs on request.....however i was much younger and easily led
*LIKE*
8. Many thanks to Niels for sending the Bass well protected. 1964 Hofner Violin Bass in need of some TLC, neck reset, and electrics, well I'v tested the electrics and it is the P-ups that are gone and will need rewinding. It goes off to the Doctor Terry Chapman to have neck done and also missing trim replaced and the bridge repaired. The Mojo is amazing. I am looking for a replacement headstock logo and maybe eventually a scratchplate however I never use one, even on my HCT ... As you can see I have already polished up the wood a little bit and I will polish it further just to remove the cloudyness from the finish, I want to keep it original so I wont be redoing the finish, mojo is very good. Will update the photos when I get it back from surgery
9. Just received my Hofner 1964 from Germany. Dealing with Niels is wonderful, a true gent. Thanks mate.
10. In my studio I use an M-Audio firewire 26/26 have done for years, nice pre amps and routing options, 8in 8 out with 2x ADAT for up to 24 out also has +48v for your mics and level controls for each channel. It can be used as a standalone unit too however I have never done that. They are cheapish, solid, sound good, they are full 19" rack. For recording a live gig, I was use the 26/26 with my laptop, use the ins from the 26/26, mix the sound to taste using the 26/26 front controls then i would use logic on my laptop to record the tracks separately while also sending a stereo mix out of outputs 7/8 to the house mixer.
11. Hello there, can you PM and we can talk about the possibility of getting this to UK please.
12. Thanks for the offer but not really my kind of thing, sorry.
13. Today is Friday, officially 'buy a vintage Fender' day
14. Consider trades against vintage Hofner violin bass
15. Very interested in this. I have my 1978 p bass on here for sale with a lot of interest so if it sells I will buy this from you and we can haggle collection discounts etc afterwards.
16.
She looks like a ripper. What is the weight?
Thank you, I have no way to weigh it at the moment but I can assure you it's heavy, Im away this weekend but will try to borrow some bathroom scales and get a rough estimate for you. I have gigged with it and its fine with a wide strap, my main problem was when i tried to carry it in the hard case from train station to gig .... OUCH!
17.
I think it would look better with the original guard on
It comes supplied with both so you can change it
18.
Sorry to be a pedant, but what exactly has been "done" to the electrics if everything is original? Gorgeous bass though!
Pots were cleaned and all re soldered, was part of the service he provides
19. With deep regret I am putting up my gorgeous 1978 Fender P bass for sale. This was a very tough decision to make simply because the bass sounds, feels, & plays AMAZING! It was good when I got it but I have had a wonderful luthier set up the neck, bridge and pups, also the electrics have been redone. Everything is original, I have the original black plate that is included and has a matching serial, I put the tort plate on because I love it. Since owning this bass I have used it for Studio work and for gigging. It comes with a newer Fender hard case and also a Gator semi-hard case (bass and hard case is rather heavy, actually it's HEAVY!!!!) the bass is ash body maple neck and is a heavy guitar but also it is very well balanced and with a thick strap it is very giggable even for an old man like me. I play Reggae so the bass was set up with flats, however, I have had it set up again with rotosound rounds (flats are included in the sale). I'm not looking for any trades at this time, I need the funds sadly because sometimes life gets in the way of fun and pleasure. It has been an absolute pleasure to own and play this guitar, the condition has people amazed and I regularly have fellow musicians asking about it and drooling over it. Thanks for looking, price is pretty firm based on work I have had done for my own personal playability and also the fact that these in this condition are seriously on the rise. This is an investment. Further photos on request, also I am happy for you to visit me and you can try it out for yourself
