1. Thanks for the replies. It does sound like the BF Compact will do exactly what I'm after. I've just looked on their website and can just about afford the Super Compact. I agree about the mid spike in the 1212L. It's nice to have for getting me out In to room but can be bloody annoying sometimes, and yes, definitely not a traditional low end. My worry was purely based on an uneducated theory about how can one 12" speaker be as loud as 2. Ive also had very lightweight cabs and they have ended up jumping around the stage, because there is no heavy amp on top. Ive never gone over 11 o'clock on the master so I know I'm never actually pushing my 1212L, but that mid spike certainly helps me keep the master down. It seems like most off you have already gone through this transition though so I'll take it as read that the BF will work perfectly. I know Alex really knows his stuff so I shouldn't really have worried. I'll keep an eye out on the classifieds as well. It's not something I want to get now, we only have one gig booked, but if the new band does take off (and we have been promised work from the old bands ages to) then a BF compact or super compact is on the cards. I must admit they do tick every box. Cheers all.
2. Yes, a Barefaced cab has been on and of the cards for a few years. They do seem very expensive if new but I have seen one or two recently that have spiked my interest. I'd like one of the smaller ones though as space is at a premium, but they just look so small that I'm not sure if I can believe very the description. I think I've gone over this before in another thread, the Barefaced vs 1212L question, but now I'm ready to try something else. I'm trying my hardest to give up pick playing. I'm in a new band with a new sound so I think I might as well get a new sound as well. It's using this TNT combo that's really opened my eye, or ears, to what I'm missing. Building something is not on the cards. I'm useless at all that, don't have the tools and don't have the time. Mark. If I ever do get rid of the 1212L you have first refusal, but like you, say, this could drag on and on lol.
3. ......What would be a good replacement? Ive had the 1212L for a good few years and have no issues with it, but recently ive been using a Peavey 1x15 combo at rehearsal s and love the tone. Im starting to think the "quirky" Schroeder tone might not be getting me the best tone from my basses. Over the past few years ive tried other cabs, Mark bass (never again), Epifany UL212 (too soft sounding) and UL 115 (best cab ive ever owned but lacked volume) but always seem to go back to the 1212L. Ive never needed the amount of volume it can handle, but ive always felt safe knowing ill never run out of steam. The 2 UL cabs needed me to push my head too much for a couple of big gigs i did. I went back and did the same gigs with the 1212L and it was much easier with this cab. I apreciate the 1212L is very pokey though, but not a traditional sounding cab, and this is what im after now. So, now id like a smallish, Neo type 1x15 (must be light weight, im not getting any younger or stronger) that has a nice low end and will match up with my Markbass F1 and P or Jazz bass. Something a bit more traditional sounding. I suppose it need to be rated at 400watts or so. I dont use FX's and dont slap, and im just playing wedding type covers. Price is a consideration, id say up to £400 would be perfect but the budget might be able to go a bit more for the right cab. Ideas, thoughts appreciated. Two cabs is not an option, and my rig supplies all the bass at gigs so PA support is also not an option. Happy to go second hand if i have to. Ill keep the 1212L so i can afford to make a mistake although id rather not. Cheers.
4. Yeah, pretty unique and the best looking bass I ever owned.
5. Wow, this is my old bass. Never thought I would see this again. A bit of background. I brought this new from the Gallery in 2009. It did come with Hanson pups but I was never happy with the tone. I decided I wanted a P tone but loved the look and feel of this bass. So I got the Gallery to put the Nordstrand P in. I got a blank pickguard from Simms and the Gallery did the rest. After i realalised the bridge pup was going to buzz when used on its own I put the Norstrand bridge pup in myself. Still didn't get on with the tone so reluctantly sold it. All in I paid £1600 or there abouts. I've always regretted selling it but, the time just isn't right to buy it back at the moment. Good luck with the sale. The asking price is pretty amazing for what the buyer will get. Edit: Actually the original pups were indeed Aero's and not Hansons.
6. Im thinking of getting a Lakland bass from here http://www.musik-produktiv.co.uk I normally use Thomanns but they don't seem to stock Laklands anymore.
7. Ah ok. That makes sense. Cheers.
8. If you are using nonstandard pitch does this mean the whole band has to also use this tuning? I'm very intrigued as to why people want to do this though.
9. I have the Peterson strobo clip tuner thTs is very accurate but it's not something I take to a gig as it's not cheap and feels a bit fragile. I mostly use the small headstock tuners that stay out of sight. Saying that I can't remember the last time I needed a tuner on stage anyway, my basses just seem to stay in tune, so it's more there for me to look at and try and make up words as Im playing :-)
10. Yeah, that's how I see it, although as all the strings are different gauges to what I used to use I would think the tone would also be a bit more even string to string. Maybe not so much that it's noticable though.
11. Have a look at post #62. It has a test video on a 5 string bass. http://www.talkbass.com/threads/a-tc-polytune-clip-on-and-its-better-than-ever-and-it-works-for-bass.1158769/page-4
12. I love these strings. I now have them on all my basses. I was a bit worried about a .107 E string but after the first strum i was hooked. Ive used nickel XL's for years, and to be honest i dont really hear any overall balance difference (if there is supposed to be one) but the overall feel is really nice and i find it quite inspiring.
13. Strangely enough i was just reading the thread over on TB about these. They look pretty good. Not sure id replace my Peterson clip on tuner but for £35 i might get one to keep in my gig bag. There is at least one review in that thread on TB, although its not a glowing one.
14.
Thpp! I know, but I've owned a Sire V7 so am used to it...
IMO the Sire is not even in the same league as the G&L abominations :-)
15. Haha, that BC crap as you call it is what keeps BC going :-). Without all that all we would have is a boring old gear forum. I love listening to Weller, especially every other week on Eastenders when he is playing on the "radio". Gotta give the man credit for his integrity lol.
16.
Some people really need to get over theirselves
What does that mean?
17. Mark, my Squier CV P neck is sitting in a cupboard at the moment. You are welcome to borrow the neck for a bit if you can find a body for it.
18. I too prefer Jazz necks. Ive used my Squier CV jazz neck on almost all my 4 string basses since i got it. Its a neck i wouldn't part with. I even have a maple Lakland JO neck on my CV Jazz so i can use the Jazz neck on my CV P (everybody keeping up lol). What i love about the CV necks is the fret size. I love those small frets (the JO neck also has them).
19. Ive had my CV Jazz since they were released and ive had issue with it (or the neck in general) at all. Probably done 200+ gigs with it.
20. With the drivel Weller has been putting out for the past 10+ years i wouldn't blame Buckler for saying no just based on musical grounds.
21. I almost turned it off when it was on TV, but glad i didnt. Im not really a lover of one man band acts, but i really enjoyed that. I liked his phrasing, it reminded me of someone else (who i cant think of right now). EDIT: Petshop boys :-)
22. Actually the one thing I had to do to both my Squire CV basses was to change the bridge. I felt uncomfortable with the 20mm string spacing so put Gotoh 201 bridges on both. The other mods were more for fun, although I do like the Wizard pups better than the stock jazz pups.
23.
Most players set the saddle, trust rod etc. I noticed there's a slight curve on my jazz bass neck due to chunky roto strings i use. Of course it plays out the box, but everyone talks about setting up. I personally lower the action.
Well yes, but most player do this to get the bass feeling and playing as they want it. you dont HAVE to do this and not everyone dives straight in with all this. Wait until you put your Rotos on and then see what needs doing. Sounds like you know how to lower the saddles anyway. Start with that.
24.
I have ordered one too. I ordered a white one, they delivered a black one yesterday. The box even said vintage white. I called the shop and they should deliver one tomorrow. Another day wasted waiting, hopefully itll e worth it. How do I set up the bass. Never set one up.
Well what needs setting up? Is it not playable out of the box?
25.
If you swapped the body, would it still be a Matt Freeman?
Im not really sure what makes it a Matt Freeman sig model anyway, other than the name on the headstock. I mean, its a standard P bass as far as i can see. Also, im pretty sure he only plays it in one colour, so the other colour is just there to help sell the bass IMO. Not that im complaining, i just cant figure out what makes it special. Im not a lover of P necks, but as has been mentioned already, the CV necks have a certain feel that makes them very comfortable to play, and the smaller frets really add the icing to the cake for me. When i picked my CVP up after a year of playing 5 strings i loved how narrow the neck felt. It took me a while to realise it still had its original neck on it. Now it has the Jazz neck its easily my Fav bass (other than the colour still). Ive been tempted to look for a trade, but also tempted to just buy a MF and sell off the neck. Saying that, if i got the White/Maple version then id probably use it like that as well. gotta love that combo. I wish Squier would bring out something with a maple jazz neck in the CV line. I did have a VM but never really liked it. The neck felt a lot cheaper than the CV necks and the frets were bigger.
