Cheap Chinese Double Bass SOLD
Jezyorkshire replied to Jezyorkshire's topic in EUBs & Double Basses For Sale
-
As i now have another Double bass my old one is for sale, it looks the same as the ones gear4music sell with the solid top, mine is really easy to play as the bloke i bought it from (a basschater) had fitted a new bridge and the action is low (g-4mm, d-5mm, a-6mm, e-8mm), have been using it on gigs and it has got the usual wear on the edges to the varnish, it did get knocked once in the car and there is a crack on one of the upper bouts about 3 inch long, i worked some pva glue into it and its never been a problem and is solid, i got it from a basschatter for £150 so will pass it on to someone for the same price, if no interest will be going on ebay, cheers, Jez

Looking for a decent double bass
Jezyorkshire replied to Bass Wielder's topic in EUB and Double Bass
i might be selling my cheap chinese solid top for what i paid here from a basschatter (£150) as i now have a new bass , just need to hang on to it for a little while as i may be having a bit more work done on the new one if things work out, its easy to play as it has a lowish string height, cheers, jez -
Blimey i only took it to Jan a week ago and i now have it back, the work looks really good, and sounds really good, the string height is a bit higher than on my cheapo chinese bass, about 6-7mm on the g string then about 9(d) 10 (a) 9 (e), can really dig in compared to the CCB and has much more tone and volume, sounds like a proper double bass to me , will try it through the acoustic image combo tommorow if i get the bass max fitted in the wing slot, cheers, Jez
-
Been to Jans this morning, going to have the fingerboard shot and nut reprofile and new fixed bridge, tailwire and maybe new sound post to start with, having my old spiros put on, will then see how it turns out and if i really like it will have the bridge adjusters fitted and full circle later if i am definetly keeping it, this way i wont be wasting money if it turns out that i dont love it! Jan is very helpfull and was concerned about keeping the amount of work/cost down till i know its a keeper, cheers, Jez

Does a string length of 102cm/40inch fall within a 3/4 size bass, seems most this size are stated as between 104-106cms as far as i can find out, am i correct in assuming that i can use normal 3/4 strings and will this mean that on my bass with a string length of 102cm there will be a little less tension than on the more normal lenght of 104/106cms, cheers, Jez

thanks guys, im expecting to have to put some money into it as i want it to be right, am considering having an adjustable bridge fitted and a Fishman full circle installed as it needs a new bridge anyway, i have heard that Jan doesnt go looking for things to have done that dont need doing and is really great at what he does so am waiting in anticipation , i have an appointment to see him on monday morning, anyone had this kind of bass and found strings/pickup that work well with it? cheers, Jez
-
Been and bought the Golden Strad from John (toddy) , have booked an appointment with Jan at leeds to see what he reccommends done , apart from the bridge as John mentioned in the ad, interesting playing it when i got home how much more tone it has than my CCB even with the knackered bridge and strings, cheers, Jez

One of the reasons was looking at Thwaites is that in that price range there are 5 basses, cant find any other shop with that many in my price range, just got an email back from the violin shop in Glasgow and they have a zeller and thats it, also i reckon a good laminate like the old german ones at thwaites will be more robust and probably just as good sound wise as summat solid thats recent for similar money, i wouldnt be put of a solid wood bass but as most playing will be amplified to varying degrees a good laminate makes sense also, cheers, Jez
-
thanks for the replys, i am leaning towards older basses that are in good condition hopefully to avoid any surprises and thats why i liked the look of those at Thwaites in that price range, would be interested in anyones opinion on the basses on that list regarding sound and if they are a good price, though i am keeping my options open, thanks, Jez

Just sold my Yanagisawa tenor sax so am looking to upgrade my very cheap chinese double bass, my budget is around £1500, am looking at used double basses and have been looking at these http://www.thwaites.com/basses/basses-from-1-2k anyone dealt with Thwaites? would have to drive down from west yorkshire so can anyone comment on these basses in this price range, or know of anything else worth looking at, cheers, Jez

Jezyorkshire replied to gcordez's topic in EUBs & Double Basses For Sale
' post='1130271' date='Feb 16 2011, 09:16 PM']Jez - just had to take a big hit on selling a car because I needed the cash to pay off debt so I know what its like from the other side - I'm not saying the amp isn't worth more I just haven't got any more! Not meaning to offend anyone - I'm new to double bass and the most I have ever paid for an amp before is £300 (for guitar) I know DB is a different animal Regards david
Know how you feel David, works bad and just had to sell my moto guzzi (motorbike), still it has enabled me to buy a 2 year old acoustic image combo and can tell you they are great for double bass, all the best, Jez -
Selling my Acoustic Image Coda R amp
Jezyorkshire replied to gcordez's topic in EUBs & Double Basses For Sale
' post='1128890' date='Feb 15 2011, 08:49 PM']Hi Greg - don't want to offend you but my budget is strictly limited - My budget is around the £500 mark
Hey David, what would your opinion be if you were the seller and someone had made that offer? just curious? -

strings are spiros and yes they are too twangy but thats not changeable at the minute, as for the fx return, yes all the eq knobs work when plugged into it except the pre amp gain! i was hoping that they wouldnt? cheers, Jez
-
the show is for charity and is ticket only which will sell rather quickly as the singer knows that many people who want to come, but we are planning doing more as we have put too much work into it just for one gig, its at pontefract sqaush centre on nov 20th and the tickets are going to be £12 but dont have any idea when they are on sale, cheers, jez

Had first rehearsal with drummer for Elvis show and am using a very cheap chinese bass with Bassmax into fishman pro platt into markbass combo with one 12inch speaker, getting good result plugging into effects return, this only eliminates the pre amp gain as the eq is still functioning on the front but is an improvement from plugging into the input on front of amp as having the pre amp gain to set plus the pro platt input gain and output level just made it more difficult to get the right setting, eliminating the pre amp gain on the amp bye using the effects return made the signal clearer and was easier to adjust, Jez

yes def interested, if can make it could possibly share the costs/journey with Tom(tpj), Jez

double bass for sale ***Withdrawn***
Jezyorkshire replied to Jezyorkshire's topic in EUB and Double Bass
the double bass is no longer available, cheers, Jez -
im afraid that i havent been playing much lately and i cant get motivated to put the time in and together with the politics at home i think its probably a good idea that i sell my double bass, its one of those chinese jobs with what looks like a solid top, lowish action with spiros on, has a few chips on the varnish and a couple of small cracks which i fixed and havent come back on one of the top shoulder bits, comes with a canvas cover and stand for £200, also there is available a bassmax pickup and fishman pro platinum pre if the buyer is interested, if you want to chat my number is 01977 780818 and i am in pontefract , west yorkshire, thanks, Jez

Hi, if that is the bass you are looking to upgrade to the one you have must be pretty useless, in my opinion thats what i would consider a very basic beginners bass, , if you are upgrading then looks are the least important and you should be looking at second hand in my opinion, cheers, Jez

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qv_cwyA-PoQ This is my 12 year old sons first composition with some accompaniement from me on the big bass, any comments welcome on either of us or as a whole or whatever, hope you like it, cheers, Jez

update on K&K bassmax, have used with quite loud blues band and doesnt sound as good at volume, definetly sounds more natural at lower volumes though using it through my Markbass combo may not be the best thing to play through though probably better than most bass guitar amps, have just won today on ebay a fishman pro eq platinum bass pre amp so will report when i get it and see what difference it makes, Jez

done a couple of rehearsals and a gig with the Bassmax plugged straight into my markbass combo, getting a decent sound not to far away from the acoustic sound with the following settings, gain at 9 oclock, low at 9 oclock, low/mid at 9 oclock, high/mid at 12 oclock and high at 1 oclock, this is with the combo off the floor and not playing with a drummer, just piano/sax/guitar, cheers, Jez
