Obviously Mr Fender was waisting his time or trying rip his customers of then.
My needs and desires grow and change all the time, most people aren't static. I also love the way basses look and if I see a bass I think looks beautiful, or cool, or whatever, I want it. If I want it badly enough I'll sell another bass to raise the cash, even if that bass is dear to me. That's led to some mistakes, but I love my current crop, even the Corvette $$ I am desperately trying to sell. I don't get that attached to them though, I like change. Mind you, the Wilkins Jazz will probably be hanging around for a long time, best sounding, playing and looking bass I've ever owned, and I bought it on a whim.
i'm a bit of a geek and definitely started out more towards the gear side. my first encounter with guitars in general was when my old man smashed up my brothers jackson when he got in some big trouble, years and years ago (i guess i was 12). i spent a long time learning how guitars worked (and floyd roses aswell! nightmare!) and managed to get hold of a replacement body and put the parts back together for him... so i definitely started out thinking about things from the other perspective. i was playing for a few years before i realised how much the music really means to me. now i'm definitely more in the playing side of things, but i haven't lost my appreciation of a good instrument!
I never had anyone smash up an instrument of mine but I know where you're coming from. I used to do so many mods on my guitars and I think I had a fairly individual sound at one point. I don't mess with basses much though. Funny thing though, my missus dug out a bunch of old tapes I did about twenty years ago and I was amazed at how good my guitar tone was, and how sympathetic my baby bass playing was. It's got me thinking. I wish I could be happy with a couple of basses for life but I enjoy the "new" experience of a ne bass too much. It's led me to some mistakes though.

I love GAS, it's a facet of me that keeps me excited about playing. That said, I love playing live, in the studio and rehearsing and those transcend any GAS and buying/selling activity I get up to, it's the gaps I have a problem with.
Thanks everyone! Basschat really is amazing! I'm still left with one great big regret though, and that is that I waited so long to do it. I wish I'd been doing this 20 years ago. But, as has been said, the thing now is to keep the momentum going and it doesn't look like there'll be any problem in that regard. Got a couple of offers to go jam with other musos, and possibly a dep call. It's looking good! Aksherly, I'm gonna link to this in my sig, so maybe this thread will serve as a bit of inspiration to others who are just as terrified as I was. It certainly helped me in a very big way and it would be remiss of me not to pass that on wherever possible.
Don't regret a thing man, your life being a bit sh*t scared of doing it will translate beautifully into your new-found love. Keep it up, don't look back! Mrs HT is obviously massively proud of you Well f***ing done !!
Ha ha i'm a girl so i'm allowed to have no man pride at all so i'm still terrified of doing it
Therefore you will never give birth.
Stop being a puss, and just do it ?
Hardly sympathetic, that, however, that is precisely what you must do. It's not exactly like giving birth is it. It's man-pride that stops blokes getting on the stage, and once they realise they can be up there without looking like/playing like a twat, it's man-pride that keeps them going up there.

Thank god for that, now i can get on with cooking the roast beef. Bloody well done, that man!

Last Seen: Yesterday, 01:55 PM Think we should just bombard him with PMs?

Heard speak of them, just checking them out now. Great bass tone and very tasteful but powerful playing. It all sounds a bit generic to me at the moment, not getting enough personality from the music. I'll keep trying because I want to like them.

Gorgeous, neck looks great and the action looks very low. I predict £4,681
I sincerely hope this reply is not disrespectful, I just wanted to address the above. The question is, where do you (we/ the UK government/whoever?) draw the line? Sadly, Tim did not have travel insurance which is designed to pay for exactly this sort of thing. I have read media accounts of people having to remortgage/sell family homes, borrow from friends and relatives or beg the same people for money because a relation or friend has either fallen ill whilst abroad and needed expensive medical care/medical repatriation or has sadly died overseas and the body is to be repatriated. I'm sure that there are many more cases of this sort of thing that simply go unreported, Tim's case, whilst undoubtedly tragic, is far from unique.
Agreed
I'll also learn Approximate...i hear the notes are pretty easy, it's just the timing you gotta concentrate on
Ahh, yes. I actually recorded a version of that about 20 years ago on my first 4-track. It was quite a challenge programming the drum parts on an HR16 and the guitar and bass have to be absolutely on the money. You're right, the notes are easy, the timing difficult at those speeds. -
I'm only saying it's worth looking into, he'd need to speak to a solicitor to get an idea of whether he has a strong case or not. He doesn't need a written confession or anything to show the guy is guilty.. I do agree though it's probably going to be one of those 'put it down to experience' cases.
On the balance of probablilities, it's highly unlikely (unless the guy confesses, making any action against him pointless unless he refuses to pay up) that any action would be fruitful. Anyone could have done the damage that night.
liiiiike...? That's the trouble, I can play all the hard stuff in my collection...I'm now down to trying to playing bach cello suite in G major entirely in slap...which sounds godawful and has no place in this world!! Whatcha got in your collection that has some killer basslines? tell me tell me tell me?!
Try learning Big Swifty by Zappa (from Make a Jazz Noise Here). It's long, horrendously difficult, and it will keep you occupied for a VERY long time. It's also a monster piece of music which will bring many smiles to your face. -
Or take him to small claims court, depending on the original cost of the cab, but you'd need a report written by an electrician/luthier first. IF you win you could get the legal costs off him too, or you may be elgible for legal aid. If you're not and you lose though you'd be left with court costs and repairs costs too though.
And you are providing evidence that it was him who damaged your gear from where exactly? Sorry Sarah, but the poor guy doesn't have even a pin prick of hope pursuing this through the county courts. The lesson is, don't let anyone f*** with your gear. I have met three bassists at gigs last year who've had their rigs totally knackered through lending them out at shows. Mind you, one of them had a vintage Marshall head that got fried, what in god's name was he doing letting anyone use it?! He even let me use it after telling me this sob story! Nice guy though.
Hi Shaun so glad you guys enjoyed the Sei bass feature, it was a real pleasure to do, but I am gutted about the caption mistake especially as it clearly says in the article that Jon is the other luthier in the shop not Alex... and as for the spelling mistake on the cover, that's just a bit crap as well, shame really as it's a great issue overall. I do the proof reading at Jazzwise, but not at BGM. Oh well. Mike
Doh! The penny finally drops, so YOU are Mike Flynn! I've said it before and I'll say it again, I really like your writing style.

The Ealing Gazette are reporting the family need to pay £10k to get Tim home. That's shocking. I wouldn't want to be the tour manager right now.

Yes, come on, we need a gig review/post mortem! And which nerve management regime worked best for you.
BTW, are those fanned fret basses easy to get used to?
They really are, Pete. They look scary as sh*t, but when you pick one up they feel really natural after a few minutes. I don't "need" one becasue I think they make more sense for ERBs, but I sure as hell want one They look damn funky!
-
Appalling typos aside, I think this is one of the best issues yet. I really like the fact there is a gig review and a letters page, although I think the letters page could be more useful, not just a big up to BGM.

Another problem I've found is that putting lemon oil on my fingerboard made it disappear, but I discovered that putting it next to a candle made it visible again. That problem coupled with using the TIIs made me a bit too nervous to go on stage.
3 sets but they are £25 a set
That's too much. I could say I've seen them cheaper but that would be an oxymoron.
Damn, I'm after short scale - do you know if it's possible to trim the 32" without causing any intonation problems?
I've found it's difficult to find the ends.
