1.
Four 10"s at once have nowhere near the force of the one 15" in the Big One at once, though you'll probably have to hear it to believe it if you're not into all the techy numbers! The main problem I have with 4x10"s is the off-axis response is so poor unless you make it as a vertical column which is too inconvenient in size and shape. You can get round this by only using the woofers for lows and then having a separate midrange driver, but if you're doing that then four 10"s will sound the same as one 15" and the area x excursion will be what determines max output (and the 15" in the Big One has more area x excursion that the best four neo 10"s all working in unison, plus it weighs less).

It is quite a big mental shift to go from the conventional 4x10" approach that's been dominant for the last 25 years but before that everyone was into much bigger cabs, often with bigger woofers and I believe bass players are forward thinking enough to again take the risk of trying something that challenges convention!

This does indeed make sense. Please don't think my 'brush off' of the technical side of cabinet making and speakers is ignorance; for me its all a learning process. Im in the middle of a law post grad so my head is exploding with information, I can't fit much more in. Over the past few months I've concentrated a lot of my bass gear and playing, more so than I ever have, and its leaving me with a lowwwww bank balance! I am enjoying it though, and its interesting to know how these items actually work. I've never owned a neo cab, but I am ready to buy one soon as an option to my rig arsenal.

I will keep an eye out for what you are making. My preference, because I admit I am vain even with bass equipment, is that vintage look you have in the other thread. That indeed is a nice finish! I'd pay more for a vintage style.

Have you thought, well no doubt you have, about other finishes, like tweed? (like Fender Bassman, Aguilar).

It'd also be cool to have a 'vintage' logo to go with the vintage look, so the player has two options on styling completely. Just a few ideas I thought i'd chip in :)

Im going off on one....Ill watch out for the new pics on your new models.

  2. Hey guys!

I was all set on a new Schroe...2x12. I almost had a deposit on one. But..I thought id test a similar 2x12 setup...so I tested a friends Aggie 2x12, (not lightweight...but). Although there are differences, obviously, and I still like the Aggies, it just didnt seem to be pushing enough air. The volume was there, but no bass....which I probably should have realised. I am competing against un mic'd Marshall half stacks so thats 2 4x12s...one of them being an Orange 4x12....super loud and heavy.

So...as much as the 2x12s do work for some...or even the 1x12 x 2, its not pushing enough for me. Later in life I might change to a smaller cab...but for now I want a bit more oommph! I still want lightweight. Ive been discussing the AE410 with a few members, (Simon) and its seems to perform incredibly.

There is also the Epifani 410UL S2, which has a little more weight now, but cheaper than the Berg by a fair whack.

I almost gassed upto a NV610....I might go down that route for my 'big cab' solution later...but for now I want a solid cab, preferrably a 4x10, that has that feeling and pushes some bass! It has to be lightweight and smallish, otherwise I could spend less or use my normal weight cabs.

Its going to be mainly powered by the LM3, when my order arrives.

Ive been gassing for Berg gear for years now...I feel like I should take the plunge and trust that it will be awesome. Just driving to test it will cost me about £40 and probably a place to stay.

But the Epifani seems also to have great stats on paper.

Ive no idea....at least ive got the right 'size' now.

I would go Schroe 410 front firing, but we are talking 8 weeks wait. Thats a lot of gigs.

Apologies for rambling on about cabs so much. Ive been researching loads...and testing, I just want it to be the right cab.

  3. First time I tried a LM2 I was blown away...and I didnt expect to be.

    So...Ive got a LM3 on the way.

It doesnt do tube grind at all...obviously, but if you want tube grind, forget everything but a full on tube Amp like Ampeg/Orange/Mesa 400+. Or...emulate it with a sansamp etc.

I wanted a good portable loud head with a different sound to what I was used to...and MarkBass amps are perfect for me.

  4.
Ahhh... your view of international finance may be slightly lacking. Buying stuff in the UK has always been dear *because* the supply change managed to ignore the current exchange rate! Dollar = Pound is pretty much the starting point. Back in the good old days when there was 2 dollars to the pound something costing $1000 (in the USA) and £1000 (in the UK) could be had for 500 quid plus the costs and taxes. You might have thought it *should* have been 500 quid (UK price) in the first place :)
I understand we always pay more here anyway. Definitely...unfortunately. Thats something I can live with. When I was younger and CDs were selling like mad, I went to the states and bought loads of them. They were about £6 or less...usually less.

Then I spoke to a few guys over there, who said its always been like that. We pay more, and that is becuase of how our county works, due to pay levels, inflation, etc. No idea if this is correct, I realise we have to pay more if its a USA product, as the shipping etc is very expensive. Just like the USA has to be a fortune for anything made by Orange (finally we pay less!). But, ah well. I still think some of the recent price rises are disgustingly high. Some of them are justified...but, for example, Ampg gear has gone up about £200 on some of the bigger cabs/amps. £200?! When I look how much they pay for the high end cabs, I just think we have a real raw deal. Ah well...tis the way it is.

    Thanks!

  5. I really want to look at a fretless in a year or so...once Ive got the 5 string gas out of the way. I NEVER thought it would be my 'cup of tea' so to speak....but now I tend to love everything 'bass' to be honest!

Good to see you got such a nice tone from that bass :)

I indeed think a P or J Bass would be my choice of fretless.

  6. Thanks guys!

I was looking at all sorts...Fender USA and various USA cab makes.

Despite it being more expensive here, I will just go for the normal UK route.

What I keep thinking is, when the economy recovers, what will happen?! I very much doubt they will lower prices over here...I imagine they will just keep it as it is!

Anyway, Ill have a look at UK prices now.

  7. Personally I keep it all out of the sunlight. Unless you have a blind or curtain, it will fae the colour...ive seen it happen to other people.

Even my cables and stuff are kept out of sunlight. Im over protective though.

If its getting warm, id move it...If you cant, get it cover on it. :)

  8.
Yes, I am undecided and may go for the LM3 or Genz shuttle, The built in tuner/multi band comp/ presets and footswitch
got me interested in the TC.
That was the thing with it...a lot of features, but the price is quite high.

I know 50W means nothing, but a LM3 gives that extra 50W, plus Im pretty happy with Markbass reliability...not that I have any reason to doubt TC. Im not into presets, and I wouldnt use the pedal. I like the idea of having a good consistent sound and just making minor changes...but thats me! Some people like to be able to change with fswitches etc.

I like using a Boss tuner, just works for me being on the floor.

No doubt this TC head is really good though. Only gripe was that the overdriven tube sound was like a cheap distortion pedal...but that might have been the video.

    Test the Shuttle/LM3! Great stuff!

  9. Thanks for the good advice.

I worked out a rough estimate if the VAT was at the 'lower end' of the products value....and I didnt realise there was an import duty as well. If I add that on, we are talking a saving of maybe £20. Not only that, they could add all sorts of charges, and then Id have to pay for the bank transfer itself (around £20).

I did think about the insured aspect as well. if they say 'oh its worth £500' when its worth more, Im not in a good position if anything goes wrong.

The main aspect that has made me think about going through a UK dealer is the fact they can sort any problems. They can also deal with all the stress of getting it here and checking it, etc.

It might take a little more time, but I think going through a dealer here is much safer.

  10. Has anyone ever imported anything direct from the USA...like basses? Or smaller cabs?

Im looking into it, but at the moment, itll only save me about £20-30, and thats if they dont sting it for the total value for VAT. If they sting the real total value, itll be the same price as UK :)

It just might be a little quicker, but...there is a risk of damage I guess. If it comes damage, the 'seller/manufacturer' is in USA...instead of a middle man that can sort it out in the UK.

    Opinions? Good or bad idea?

  11. Bass felt right...

Anyone who says 'bass is easy' is full of crap. my guitarist said it..so I told him to play mine. He couldnt. His hands couldnt handle it, and he has no real feel for rhythm.

Bass still rules my world. I do like Telecaster guitars...a lot, but a Fender P/J or Stingray is my home.
