On a more serious note, my offering is my 2006 MIM Precision. A nice bass, nothing flashy, but seriously better to play than the 2008 American Standard I had recently. Go figure.
As event organiser and Judge I must ask you to withdraw your entry "oh er mrs" Tis much too nice and shiny to be considered....
So who won the Amp category?
you tell me ? I'm really confused now. Amp category ? As I am organiser and Judge I decree that this competition shall end on Sunday with 2 categories. Amps and Basses

I'm confused now ! I thought the competition finished on Sunday and that bassassassin had won ? And I'm the organiser and Judge..... We'll let it run another week then and see what's unearthed.
I'm sure this has been said before, but I'm loving the shortscale action right now. I picked up a Squier Bronco for £50 for a laugh (could sell it locally for same) and found it surprisingly playable, even in the state I got it in. I changed the bridge for a 4 saddle job (had to get the drill out to "convert" it into top stringing, drill 2 pilot holes for the mounting and replace one of the saddle screws with a longer one because it wasn't long enough for the intonation I needed!) and I'm hoping to get a lipstick pickup in it soon. All in all I've spent approx £30 on it and although the tuners are a bit crap, they work so I'll leave them for now. I could see myself getting along with this bass for some time. It's great for picking up and noodling away. Might pimp it up with better tuners and a swish new pickguard, but all in all it's been something of a revelation for me. I'm getting ready for my first gig (gulp) in a few weeks and this is the one I've been learning the songs on, so I might even end up playing it on stage. Who would have thought it? Might be tempted to get an Epi EB-0 or equivalent for some shortscale variety
At last a short scale thread........and there's only me reading it. Although I don't own one at the moment I am thinking of making one. Just goes to show if you actually just want to play a bass rather than polish it you can have a lot of enjoyment from a cheap short scale jobbie.

Has anyone out there seen, heard or bought a Birdsong short scale bass ? I like the company ethics and the way they build. Birdsong.... Before you go looking youtube is pretty poor.
Its my understanding that noone can sell title to goods that they do not legally own. So if you purchase something from CC, and its later discovered to be stolen, I guess the person possessing the goods at the time of recovery is the one that loses out unless by agreement with the insurance company (witness the deal struck over Mark Kings stolen Empathy Matrix 001).
This is very true , but if the theft was a while ago the original owner has probably been paid out by the insurers and if he had no insurance what was he doing buying a Fodera without it ? Best I have managed was a Mint White Mexican Precision for £70.00 at my local pawn shop. We have just got a new pawn shop in town ......I'm off there now.....bye.....
A P bass player like me I expect, though I do have a bunch of foot cotrolled stuff that changes the sound. But, the other side is the mass of knobs and controls and subtle options you get on an active bass, and the many players who replied "yes, lots" to the "who uses their tone controls?" thread. Your view is valid if you have your own signature sound but if you play in a covers band and have to make a sound that's close to each orginal rekkerd, you need a few more otions than high filter off/high filter on that your P bass gives you ..
Very valid point that I failed to mention. But I have a thing about "covers" bands so thats probably why But surely if you did mainly covers you wouldn't use a bass with a signature sound as that in itself would cause problems ? and why then go to the bother of trying to make it sound different ? Would it not be better to buy an active bass with a wide tonal range to start with. -

I built my own "varitone" years ago and won't bother again or with any of the commercially available items. I don't see much point in them when using a good back-line setup or when DI-ing into a panel or mixer. If you like doodling at home and playing around with different sounds then maybe they have some merit. I think the current trend seems to be moving away from items like these towards a good solid bass sound combined with a few pedals and a good amp. We all know most of the sound and dynamics comes from your own fingers anyway. I liken it to audio amps with all the bells and whistles we saw on them a few years ago...gimmicks and expensive ones at that. My audio amp has one volume control and a set of good castle speakers and whatever I play through it I never think " that needs more bass" or "that needs more treble" its a pity we can't get bass amps the same. I have always found too much tone control on a bass or an amp is there to correct an underlying weakness in the sound. Less is more.....now who said that ? -

I have nothing buy praise for APC. Luckily I have continued my business account from my old company to my bass enterprise. This means I get preferential rates and it only costs me £9.80 to send a very well packed bass. I have recently sent about 15 with them without incident. If you send items regular get an account with them to save a few quid. I cannot remember what the increased insurance rates are but they are very reasonable. For international I use Parcelforce, the last I sent was to Denmark, it weighed 9kg and cost £42.00 For smaller items I always use Royal Mail either Standard parcels or a signed for service. I must of sent 500-600 items in the past 3 years with them and have never had a problem. -

Remember there is a prize, modest though it will be , its still a prize.
'Underground SAI' on Friday St is still the same with old and new speakers crammed to the ceiling still run by the Original SAI guy, Do you remember the Luthier up Carrington Rd? was my first guitar teacher but not very good at either teaching or making
bloody hell 2 people in Chorley play bass.... The so called Luthier / teacher was Dave he moved in the old tailors shop on the corner, I lived across the road in Lorne St. I pass the new SAI about 4 times a day so I suppose I had better look in , he may remember me. Do we know each other.....?

In my teens in Chorley we had Pall Mall Music a converted terraced house crammed to the ceiling with gear and run by guys with beards.....superb shop, service and gear, down the road in Coppull was a cavernous old cinema that was SAI again a cracking shop where I bought a secondhand Yamaha Combo for £230.00 in 1979 !!!!!! I think a guy called Dave Shinn had something to do with both shops..... Does anyone remember the shops......? modern shops just aren't the same.

Have you thought about a Warmouth neck?
Welcome to the site you have come to the right place........but please don't butcher the Westone they are excellent basses , I sold my 1A to a fellow basschatter a few months ago . Going mad with the router ! Sub 6 pounder Part 1,
Prosebass replied to Prosebass's topic in Build Diaries
As it happens , I spent 2 hours earlier making a black plate and really nice it looked until I rested the soldering iron on it........ So having run out of black perspex had to spend another 2 hours making a gold one which is better. Finished article tomorrow hopefully. -

The shellac is finished but I leave it 48 hours before the final cut back and polish. Next job is the scratch plate and is highly technical. Items required for the pattern were 1. A Cherios box....make sure its empty otherwise you get shouted at. 2. Sellotape....a one handed dispenser is always best 3. Scissors Big decision next, either understated black or bling it with a gold mirror jobbie. I would use a Korg Ampworks Bass Unit. The output is stereo and the matching can be switched between amp / line It gives you full eq control The amp and cabinet modeling actually work (you can therefore find a sound that matches your amp / cab setup) The effects are ok After using it with headphones I never practice now with backline gear , it makes your bass sound so good. Whatever you normally play through will sound inadequate after using this unit and headphones. it is rather noisy with some settings but very quiet with others as it uses a noise-gate, and for about £45.00 new its superb. I would recommend anyone to use it for practice.
