1. Interesting thread, Chris. It's well-established that the placebo effect is very, very powerful in all sorts of fields. So why should it be different with basses? When you add in peer expectation/pressure (as Machines mentioned) and general GAS consumerism (cf. everyone on this forum ), I think there's little doubt that people will see/hear what they want in their basses to a large extent. You'd need a proper experiment to verify this, of course - any basscentric psychology post-grads out there?? I'm off to play my Marlin Sidewinder...
2.
Thats nice. I mean really nice. If i had the money I SOOO would. Do you take computers? bikes? ANYTHING!!!!!! I have a small malaysian slave somewhere....
Well, I'd consider one of these...
3. Bump for a great-looking and sounding bass. Quality playing there too; it's not easy to keep a crowd interested, much less clapping along, during a four-minute bass solo.
4.
Lovely looking Jazz there.. some good photography too .
Thank you, Mr Machines. The old (nowadays) Nikon D70 makes it hard to take bad photos , though the full-frame D3 looks fantastic...
5. PMs received, thanks. Still available... bumpola to page one Busy on here at the moment, isn't it? Anyone would think Christmas is coming up.
6.
Quite bizarre ... presumably it was first sold with the accompanying accessories :-
Indeed... I bet it swings too.
7. Have you seen this one in the sale section?
8. Some interest but this is still available...
9. Very, very nice - there are some cracking basses for sale on here at the moment.
10. Mmm... beauty. Good luck with the sale.
11. Kyuss do indeed rock - good luck with the sale.
12. Ladies and gentlemen of BassChat, I give you - one Made in Japan Fender Jazz in superb condition with no noticeable dings or marks. The 'Q' serial number at the base of the neck dates the bass to 1993-4. I bought it from Denmark Street about three years ago when I took up bass again and it's served me well since. Why am I selling? Simple, I bought a '75 reissue recently so this has to go. Pictures: (I can send larger versions of these images, if required) The bass is loaded with noiseless Bill Lawrence J-45 pickups, purchased from BassChat's own Pete aka mybass in June. It's a little hard to find technical info on Bill Lawrence's website, but see here for a review and discussion of the pups, and herefor sound clips. Tone is very subjective but 'full-bodied classic Jazz' sums them up for me. I never gigged with them but they're hum-free in my practice room. Unsure? Ok - I'll throw in the stock Fender Japan pickups FOR FREE, if you'd like the choice. As you can see, the Jazz has a black scratchplate but you have the option of (the originally fitted) white or tortoiseshell, if you'd prefer either of those. Everything else on the bass is stock, and the strings are a set of played-in DR Hi-Beams. You probably know how highly rated Japanese Fenders are; this Jazz lives up to that reputation. Price? £350 shipped or £330 collected from SE London (I'd really prefer not to courier this). You're welcome to try out the bass over a cuppa, of course, and PM me if you have any questions. Thanks for looking, Doug
13. Great shots - looks like you're doing justice to the bass too.
14.
It's also fueling my GAS, that's not fair. In pittance I demand you give me that '75 RI for me to forgive you.
Do not covet your brother's Jazz, my son. Purge thine heart of GAS for, verily, salvation is here.
15. Well, I followed The Burpster's sage advice and it worked out perfectly. I used a tiny drill bit to manually deepen the hole a tad and put a little Vaseline on the screw ends to ease them in. Result - both pickups lower and a nice lower action following saddle height adjustment and a tweak of the truss rod. Thanks.
16. Looks a stunner and I love the colour - congratulations.
17.
Thats normally the case, you may want to carefully deepen the holes and then lube the screws as you put 'em in with lard (or nice silicone grease if you have some) but dont overdo this as you dont want 'em sloppy..... A teeny bit on teh bottom 2/3 threds is all thats neccasary, so that cutting the new thread in teh wood doesnt twist he screws off which would be bad.....
Thanks for that; I'll have a look tonight.
18. I'm trying to lower the bridge pickup on one of my Jazzes. There's some black foam underneath which is mounted on an earthing plate. Although I can push the pickup down with my fingers, the screws refuse to turn after a certain point so I can't get it as low as I'd like. (The neck pickup is quite a bit lower so no problem there.) Might the screw holes be too shallow? Any ideas appreciated - thanks.
19. Thanks for your comments. It is an ash body. While www.craftedinjapan.co.uk have ceased trading at the moment, John @ Far East is still going. He actually had two identical spec 75RIs (the other one is up on his site now) so I spent a while pondering before plumping for the older one in better condition - this is from 1993-4. OTPJ, just seen your purchase - wowzer.
20. Collected yesterday from John Blackman at Far East Guitars - nice chap to deal with.
21.
What were the lyrics to Warriors of Gengis Khan again - something about burning, shooting raping and looting I think?
I'm a warrior, the blood won't wash away I'm a warrior... I'll kill myself someday Classic
22. Blimey, this brings back memories... Hey Mister Bassman... play the f**king bass!
23.
your family also is vintage....all original? ehehhehe
Yes, and the wife comes with three-bolt Micro-Tilt neck adjustment - you don't mess with that.
24. The natural Precision is stunning and I can't imagine finding one in better condition... would you take my family in part-exchange? Few dings here and there, otherwise in good working order. Let me know.
25.
The person who used the top bunk doesn't live with us anymore, so I may need to get a new bed EDIT: Also, I figure I may need to get another bass in the near future...a 5-string should suit my needs...I also wouldn't mind having a fretless...
Or... keep the bunk beds and stow the 5-string and fretless on top bunk for easy access.
