Cool, I was worried you'd given up on us Trev Like the angling of the wall box, anything to help get the right lead into the right hole
Nah not given up on you guys. Just busy trying to finish up current project before next one starts! There's a bunch of offline stuff going on in the next couple of weeks: bathroom and kitchen are being replaced, plasterers are coming in again to skim booth and then decorators are coming in. I'll update you again after that!
  2. Here's a few random shots for you. The first is of the booth end of the room: The other of a wall box: And a close-up just for fun:
  3. So... back to regularly scheduled programming... I had a cunning plan on how I could get to the ceiling bits that I can't reach: 1. get a very long ladder indeed 2. Rest it against the 'steps' on the ceiling: And here's a shot with a bit more plaster on the booth:
  4. What budget do you have? Edit: FWIW firewire is much preferable to USB. The Apogee Duet is a nice little unit if you can stretch to it.
  5. It's been suggested elsewhere that this looks more like a pizza oven than an iso-booth. What do you guys think:
  6. Heheh. For your delectation... today you can see the booth is getting rendered with a scratch coat:

All proving my point... what sounds best to any particular individual... is best (for them)!
  9. Really not bad at all. One of the best budget recordings I've heard for a long time. Kick is a little flabby and could have done with a little more time on the mix (there's a small amount of low end clash) but not bad at all! Congrats!
I'm sorry, but the best chocolate is clearly ASDA smart price white chocolate!!
Maybe we should have a little poll. What do you think everyone? What is the best type of chocolate?
  11.
oooh! Booth is coming along nicely!
Watch this space for tomorrow's pics!
Well yeah I like it but is it the best I can do?
The best is the sound you like best. It's subjective. What's the best chocolate? There is no best. Only subjective opinion. If the sound you like best is dead flatwound strings then leave them as they are. If you prefer fresh nickel roundwounds, put them on.
Hi guys, Right I'm "in the studio" next week, and am debating putting new strings on my bass. I use flatwounds, I play erm indie folk I guess and what a nice smooth warm sound, so im thinking i stick. I've had these on now for about 7 months.
7 months is a very long time but given they are flatwound... Key is do you like the tone you are currently getting. If you do, leave them, if not, change them!
  14.
Thanks for taking time out to listen. Production was quick, we only recorded for 2 days, and paid about £150 in total. It sounded quite good in the studio, guitars sounded pretty beefy (tracked 4 times!..) , the bass was clear and the drums DID sound huge. Ah well, I see the points you're making though, and I really appreciate it. If we had more time/money I imagine things would have turned out a bit differently!
Yup. Sounds like you got what you paid for!
  15.
Please be brutally honest, I've heard enough "It's really good!"s, would like to hear some "needs more/less" etc: www.myspace.com/hellshrine Cheers!
Here goes then. First thing, the material really isnt bad at all. Musicianship is pretty good too. As said above the vocals are pretty awful. Melodyne will sort this if your singer can't. The production isn't very good either I'm afraid. Guitars need to be much more in yer face in this genre. Drums need to sound huge (they sound puny and as if they are being played in the back of a deep dark cave.) 2 reasons for this: too much of a bad sounding room in the mix and too much reverb. Bass is non-existent. I'd guess this is because the control room in the studio is not treated well. The bass in the room becomes overwhelming so the mixer backs off resulting in weak bass. Hope this helps. As ever... ymmv Edit: and I'm not listening on laptop speakers but on Adam s3as though cranesong converters in a treated room
  16. Today it was time to paint the last wall and ceiling. After applying about a full role of bright blue masking tape to my beautiful maple control room window I got down to it: I quickly decided that I wish I had gone with a more straightforward ceiling design! I found that if I stand on a 7 foot tall platform on my tip toes, with extendable roller at full extension, I can just reach the highest point of the ceiling... but I can't get into the corners... doh! Here's my problem:
  17.
nice wall unit, the bass aint bad either
Heheh. Do you see any resemblance?
  18.
Wow! That is a gorgeous Infinity. Is it one of the original Limited editions (I think they had an Ovangkol neck), or the newer one (with a maple neck)?
Er...
Here's mine. It's a very early one. Has no serial number. It's been suggested to me [Edit: I sent a picture to the Warwick and asked them] that it may be the original Namm show model:
20. Sorry, I don't do hourly rates and will rarely do rehearsals. Rack rate is 500 a day if I engineer, a bit cheaper if you are/have an engineer and just want an assistant (though I do offer special downtime rates for bands who can come in at short notice if a booked session ends early or starts late; I also offer development deals for the right unsigned band) and I'm booked til pretty much christmas! (Though I'd guess if you were prepared to fly from greece for a rehearsal 500 a day will be pennies to you!)
so how much you thinking? price per hour for rehersal only
21.
wow that is awsome alembic for rental? super !!! Ampeg are awsome too nice ones m8 ...
It's not for rental. It's currently available to use for free to anyone who rents the room!
  22.
You going for a big live sounding room there? Those panels in that positioning wouldn't take the room down to diffuse, so I'm hoping you'll be looking for a signature sound rather than a neutral sound.
The panels wont be in that position. They will be on rails so they can be moved anywhere in the room. They are also reversible diffsorbers with BAD panel diffusers on one side and absorbers on the other side. This makes for a completely tuneable room. Gobo's will also be available for micro-acoustic tuning.
What are you doing with the floor? All carpet, or different surfaces?
Wooden floors. Throw rugs available where required.
I loves me some positive room sound, and yours looks big enough to be useful to a decent sized ensemble.
That's the neat thing. You can set up the panels so they provide for a neutral response, so one side of the room is set to diffusion and the other is set to absorb or whatever you want! It's designed to take an ensemble of 25 (though I think that might be a little cosy if I'm honest.)
Nice work so far, looking forward to seeing it finished (I know it doesn't feel like it ever will be, that's the nature of studio builds isn't it?).
Thanks man!
