1.
Good choices all round there! We're stuck with 192's as we have a job lot from Digi, we have 14 HD rigs and 24 studio rooms, I can't afford to even begin thinking about changing the I/O...! How are you getting on with the Adams?
Wow! That's huge! Is that a teaching facility of some kind? Love the Adams. Stuff just translates
2.
Love Cascades, superb for the wonga! NOt heard the Lundhal transformer version though, make much difference?
yeah makes a big difference actually. Much more detailed and a more open top
3.
Haha that's perspective for you. Okay cool i expected you'd have some sort of isobooth given everything else lol. I can't wait to hear some soundclips if you're willing of course
there will be a total of 3 isobooths under the final design!
4.
Looking good mate, the API is a cracking desk to run PT through, makes the 192's sound good! Couldn't see what monitoring you use (admittedly on a cursory glance) what's in the control room?
thanks man though I don't use 192s. I have 32 I/o of lynx aurora and a cranesong hedd on the mixbus midfields are Adam s3a. Mains are dynaudio m3s
5.
Cheers! Heard of 'em, never seen one. I take it you have another mic in the shell or round back getting some beater click and what have you then? We want all your secrets
you got em. There's a shure beta 91 inside the kick
6.
Cool - I've bought a couple of them recently for my SE Gemini's - as I had one of those horrible moments watching helplessly as one toppled on to a floor on a standard mic stand that couldn't take the weight... Knew that the time had come to get at least one 'proper' mic stand! And the SE's are great stands - not done any drum recordings since I got them - but will certainly use them for over-heads next time I do... And what's the mic you have on the guitar stand in front of the kit? A ribbon?
yes. It's a cascade fathead with lundahl transformers. Probably the best bargain in audio at the moment! You can't tell but it's about 10 feet in front of the kick!
7.
Looking splendid! Is that a pair of SE Electronics 'Stand 1' microphone stands you're using for the overheads?
thanks man. good eye. Yes it is!
8. It's a Yamaha Subkick. An NS10 woofer wired backwards it's essentially a microphone that captures all the low end frequencies of the kick drum.
9. thanks man. Yes. There will be a total of three isobooths any of which can be used for amps.
10. Nb. The eagle eyed among you will have spotted my beautiful ampeg fliptop in the 2nd photo...
11. As you'll see here there hasn't been an enormous amount of work over the summer. I spent about 6 weeks out of the country and came back straight into a session. The room has now been entirely painted and the floor has been sealed with concrete paint. Booth windows and door have not yet arrived. In fact I spent today cutting blocks of rockwool to fill the window apertures (but forgot to take pictures after I'd done so). Anyway, here's a few for you (taken on my iphone so excuse the quality): And one of the house kit:
12. Yeah I've seen the ssls. I played with michael W's aws recently and while I get what people like, it doesn't really do it for me. Every one of my instincts is screaming API right now...!
13.
The 1608 or bigger? G
Well the plan was a 32 channel 1608 but since they announced that they won't be doing automation I'm starting of thinking of a legacy. There are a couple of deals around on well maintained used ones right now...
14. Btw, if you want to read a more in depth guide to this I did a long one here: http://forums.dv247.com/recording-mixing/7...me-guitars.html
15. There are a hundred ways to skin this particular cat. Unfortunaly there are 200 ways to screw it up. If you have the sound you want coming out of the speaker you then have to think about the room: is it colouring the sound in an unpleasant way?if so you may be able to reduce the room sound either by using gobos (or maybe a duvet) to minimise that. If you have that covered (no pun intended) are you using a mic that will tend to capture the sound you are after? An sm57, for example, will capture a mid-forward sound (some might say nasally). If you only have one mic you won't be able to experiment to find the right one for you track. The next thing to think about is mic placement. It isn't as simple as "just sticking a mic in front of the cab. Different placements will capture very different tones. There is no substitute for moving the mic around to find the right position. Broad strokes but close up on the grill will capture in your face guitars, further back will push them back in a mix (but you'll need a good sounding room). Pointing the mic closer to the centre of the cone will make for a treblier output, closer to the edge will be bassier. A movement of as little as an inch can make a huge difference. A decent preamplifier is a prerequisite. Different models will provide for different flavours API does aggressive guitars very well. Chandler germ is great on dirty guitars, tg2 for a full sounding rhythm. The list goes on...
16. The er... glamour of studio ownership. Here's one of me cleaning the gutters: At least it shows my feet are still firmly planted on the ground... er, ahem.
17.
Sounds good. Surprised its only an HD3 system, thought you would have gone bigger to give more power to a studio of that size. May need to stop by and have a look when its done, and im in the area. G
I don't do much 'in the box' so there's really no need for more. I've run 150 channel sessions without a glitch.
18. Protools HD3 system. There'll be an API desk in there when were are finished.
19.
wow that's like 72 in, 24 out.
Exactly right!
20. Thanks guys. Not much happening at the moment. I'm back in the States finishing off the job I started tracking in July. I expect to be here for another couple of weeks or so. More specifically:
@ Edward, the wallbox is one of three identical ones around the room; @ Mike257, I still think the photos don't do it justice. Once it's finished I'lll get a pro in to take some photos for me. @ Bythesea - I can't decide whether to go for shagpile or to just cover the floor with sawdust, I'd worry that might attract the Country crowd though... Think I might just go with maple per the original plan ;-) @ 51mon - git
21. Think this is a slightly better shot actually:
22. Finally I got some drums into the room for tracking! Here's a happy snap for your delectation. Was still setting up at this stage: moving kit around, moving gobos, trying different mics etc: Loads of things still to do in the room: decorating to be finished, traps to be mounted, windows and doors to be fitted to booth 1 etc. One day... But one thing I know for sure now... drums sound HUGE in this room!
23. Just a little update of the last couple of weeks' activity. I just got back to the country. The bathroom was completely torn out and the plaster knocked off the walls, flooring was torn up. It was all quite nasty. At this point it has been re-plastered, the toilet has been replaced and the entire room painted (white at this point). I'll post a pic when it's finished. The old control room has been given a bit of a cosmetic only face lift pending work beginning on the new one (hopefully sometime quite soon) which is at the opposite end of the building. I'm hoping the facelift of the old room will be finished tomorrow. I'll post a pic when it is. While I was away the plasterer was due to finish the booth and the decorator was due in. Well the decorator turned up but no sign of the plasterer. Despite promising to appear on a number of occasions he remained missing in action. This, of course, meant the decorator couldn't finish Ultimately, the decorator called in another plasterer who, on closer inspection, noted some nasty looking cracks in the plaster on the booth covering an area of about 4' x 4': here's another shot: Fine if it's just skin deep you say... Unfortunately it wasn't. A few taps, made that obvious. The movement in it was noticeable. As a result, it had to be replaced: before it could, finally, be skimmed: Finally, the decorators can come and finish the job!
24. More than anything it sounds like you just need to practice the craft. It takes a lot of work to get record quality recordings. While good gear will take you a long way great technique will take you furtehr and faster. For that reason I wouldn't worry too much about upgrading gear until you think it's poor gear holding you back rather than the fact your techniques need work. I've written a bunch of tutorials on recording and mixing over on this site if you are interested: http://forums.dv247.com/recording-mixing/. There are sections on everything mentioned above. Hope this helps!
25. Nice. I'd love a Stanley in maple but the piggy bank is a bit empty right now!
