1. What kind of budget do you have and what kind of results are you after?
Hi Guy's.... Can anyone recommend a good non budget breaking recording studio? I am based in Carlisle, Cumbria but we would travel a wee bit for a competitive cost..... Scotland/Lancs/N.East..... anywhere cheers guys any suggestions would be gratefuly appreciated Craig
2.
Even if you do say so yourself!
Yup. And having worked in many of them I feel reasonably well qualified to comment.
lolz seriously nice recordings though, although i don't think the drumming was exactly first class, sorry.
Wow. You obviously have higher standards than me. The drummer is a pro. He didn't stray from the click once. There's some pretty complicated stuff going on there. When you hear it on the radio with the rest of the song you'll understand.
 3.
Interesting. Would love to hear how it sounded
Your wish is my command. I've posted a soundclip of the R84 room mics from the session (below) on www.myspace.com/circlestudios for anyone else that is also interested. 4. Did a quick tidy up after today's session (strings) and took a wide angled photo thingy on my latest iphone app: As you can see, abfusors still arent up on the wall. Lights are now up inside booth and electrics are all done. Glass arrives on Thursday. :brow:
 5. Luckily I'm not asking a mastering engineer to design my website. I'm asking the designer of the mastering room to design my mix room.
That website design is terrible. "Our research has determined that people who are looking for photos of a recording studio will have a far more enjoyable experience if they have to sit through a "loading" screen and other UI obstacles first." S.P.
6. Will try and get some clips onto myspace in the next week or so. Anyways...I promised some big news in the New Year. Here it is... I'm really pleased to say that to go along with what I believe may be one of the best drum rooms in the country Thomas Jouanjean of Northward Acoustics has agreed to take on the job of designing my new control room. Some of you will have seen the amazing job Thomas did with Amsterdam Mastering: http://www.amsterdammastering.com/ I personally couldn't have been more impressed. That's why he got the job and why we will be shooting for one of the best mix rooms in the country. Thomas will start work on the drawings soon and I hope to start the build in September this year. Stay tuned!

 8. Not strictly a build shot but some interesting pics from this weeks sessions: we are shooting for a Amy Winehouse/Daptones kind of sound so went for a 1952 Gretsch kit mic'd primarily with a pair of AEA R84's 5 feet out but with the addition of a subkick, a KM84 on hihat and a cascade fathead 20-25 feet out. The R84's went to chandler TG2, the subkick to Chandler Germ, the km84 and fathead went to a pacifica. First up is the Gretsch and mics and 2nd up an action shot. Enjoy:
 9.
In our old room, the ceiling was fairly normal height, but triangular (there's a word for that!?). The walls were made of some really cheap plaster board, loads of windows, a little bit of brick. We had a great sound in there, it's fairly lively, but not mushy. The roof collapsed so we've moved to a new room within the warehouse at work. This room has a very high ceiling, also triangular. It has very hard walls and ceramic tiles on concrete floors. We're getting loads of reverb, which isn't so bad. The drums sound great, but when the guitar and bass kick in it's one big wall of mush. I think it's a problem in the low end, but i'm no expert. Any advice on what to do? We could drape something to create a false ceiling. I could buy some rockwool and make some bass traps. Could we sort it with EQ? There are some pictures here.
I'd start by making half a dozen moveable gobos of rockwool. You can then more them around til you find the best position for them. It's likely a combination of both lack of bass trapping, reflective surfaces and parallel walls.
 10. Thanks man!
Just checked last nights lottery ticket... no joy I'm afraid. Lovely looking thing though, good luck with the sale.
11. No interest at all I guess. Oh well. I guess it's staying.
 12. some interest but no deal yet
 13. Not aircon. Can't tell you until deal is finalised.
 14.
True. Price pleas or it'll have to go! ped
Wow! That's a big ask as I've never even seen one sell in the UK. GAK says they can get you one for approx £12,500. Though the price has actually dropped on the last few of the production run of these in the States from $15000 to about $12500 though they can be picked up from some dealers in the States for approx $10,000 (I understand there are only 4 or 5 left in the world after which they are sure to go back up IMO). If you buy from the States you'll of course have to pay shipping and vat on this taking it to about £7500-£8000 shipped. So I guess I'm looking for the closest offer I can get to £7000 but, to be honest, who knows.
 15.
Cool!! What's the "big news" for the new year then?
It's very cool... but not yet...
 16.
want a jaydee??.. and cash what headstock design has it got
It has the V headstock as you can see in the pics I posted in the Alembic Gear Porn Thread (here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=26098&st=80) I can take and send more pics to anyone who is genuinely interested. As you know if you are looking this was a very limited production run. This one is number 4. Might be interested in a partial trade. PM me with your offer.
 17. Am *thinking* about selling my beloved Alembic Spyder as I use it so little. If you are interested drop me an email with an offer I can't refuse. Cheers Trev
 18. The key component is the core sound. You can carve/shape/squash that but the quality of every item in the input chain directly affects what the engineer can do with it down the line. My preference is for a good quality passive bass at the start of the input chain. It tends to provide for a fuller starting position. Fairy dust can be added from there.
 19. Here's a bit more for you. Framing out the main isobooth ready for acoustic treatment. Here's a shot from the ground to the top of the windows: and one looking up:
 20.
Wow, thanks for the offer mate, where in Derby are you? I may well take you up on that, if you don't mind me bringing a mate who's really into the whole recording/tech side of music, he's the guitarist/DJ in my new DnB/Dubstep, and really likes seeing and talking about the whole technical side of things. Zach
I'm in Birmingham but it's only 40 mins down the road!
 21.
Cool, thanks mate. So if I use 10's I'll have a nice fat sound with loads of bass? Love your refurb thread BTW. Zach
Yep. 10s work very well. Try not to get something with too rigid a cone (like a hartke or something). Just a sensible 10 inch middle of the road speaker cone from a guitar cab will be fine. Keep watching the refurb. Much more to come! Am just too busy to do anything at the moment! Edit: I see you are in Derby. Drop by some time and I'll show you around the place. T
 22.
Anyone got a guide to making one? Zach
The Yamaha one does use NS10 cones but you can use pretty much any speaker. The smaller the cone the less bass. The bigger the cone the less tight the bass is. 10 inch is a good compromise between the two. All you need to do is make a stand for it to hang on and wire it backwards. Job done.
 23. Yeah I have and do use a subkick on bass all the time (esp if I'm micing my fliptop as it happens.) Sounds great esp for that old school vibe.
 24. Big news coming up in the New Year. Until then I thought you'd be interested in finally hearing how the room sounds. Here's a clip of drums from a project I started tracking recently. Haven'd done the full mix yet so this is just from the rough mix. There's a Zener on the kick drum and dramastic obsidian on the mixbus. I raised the levels for ya with a UAD precision limiter. Other than that, no other EQ or processing. For those who can't/won't download I've also posted the file on www.myspace.com/circlestudios (hmm, looks like the file may have been too big to upload here anyway) Happy New Year!
