1. Putting this back up, it's still getting no use and I could do with the cash to fund another purchase...
  2.
For me i'd say half to double is acceptable (depending on what that is). TBH I really enjoy a good NYE gig, I'm not bothered by being out drinking with friends, but a few beers, playing some music, enthusiastic crowd... there are worse ways to spend a night
I'd definitely rather be playing, and I'm sure it would've been a great atmosphere in the pub where we were offered the gig. I probably would've gone for it to be honest, for the reasons you mention above, but was overruled on this occasion
Country pub in North Herts this year. 9-1, three sets about an hour each. £1,250 for a 5-piece band which I think is about right. I think musicians should be getting at least £200 a head for pubs and clubs, £400+ each for corporate/function. Pub's organised a lovely heated marquee for all the locals and regulars, should be intimate and fun! Truckstop
Sounds like you've got a pretty good one there Truckstop!
  3. No gig for us this New Year's Eve. We were offered one earlier in the year, but turned it down as the other guys decided it wasn't enough extra cash to warrant not having the family New Year's Eves that they'd planned. Out of interest, what would you say the going rate for NYE gigs is at your typical local pub/social club venue in terms of percentage greater than your usual fee? I ask as the one we were offered, the guy was willing to pay about an additional half on top of our usual fee. We thought that was a little low, considering we got double our usual fee for a Christmas Eve gig this year.

If you want to try a budget solution before shelling out hundreds on a proper pro setup, then I rate Algoriddim's "djay 2" app. I use it on the iPad, not sure if there's an Android version too. They've recently added Spotify support, so you can mix your own collection with anything you can find on Spotify. You need to get a headphone splitter cable to allow you to cue up the next track, I think this was about £12. With just the cable and the app, you can pull off some passable beat-matched mixes, but I've just added a Numark midi controller so I have a real crossfader and slightly better pitch control. It's a Numark "iDJ Live 2". This was about £40 from eBay. Obviously it'll never provide that lovely tactility that a pair of 1210s does... But considering the whole setup (not including the iPad obviously) including app, splitter cable, and controller was no more than about £60, I'm pretty impressed to be honest. Here's the setup, excuse the poor photo and general clutter next to it!
  5. Have a bump for a lovely B2A. I have one of these, it doesn't get a lot of playing time these days but it's a great little bass. The folding knee rest has broken on mine, and I just could not find a replacement the last time I looked. This has prompted me to have another try! Good luck with the sale.
  6. Had a request for a sound clip, so here's a quick video. Apologies for the poor quality phone video, scruffy attire, and general rubbish-ness at playing a fretless Hopefully gives you some idea what the thing sounds like though. http://vid1191.photobucket.com/albums/z464/alexbaker27/IMG_5401.mp4

  8. Ibanez Blazer fretless - £[s]220[/s] New Price - £175 delivered Good evening basschatters. I've decided to sell my Ibanez Blazer fretless. I don't really have a need for a fretless for gigs, and whilst it is rather good fun to have a plonk on every now and then, I'd quite like to release some funds tied up in it (primarily to balance the books after the recent acquisition of a Squier Jazz Deluxe V...) As such, no trades thank you. It's not fretless from the factory, a previous owner has de-fretted it and added a coat of some sort of hard wearing varnish to the fingerboard. They've done a reasonable job, there's a few bits where the varnish has crept on to the edge of the neck, but it plays nicely. The action is not quite as low as I'd like, but I'm sure a professional setup would be of benefit. The plating on the hardware is a bit worn and tarnished but all functional, and there's some rust on the screws and the pickup pole pieces. When I got the bass, it was looking rather tired and unloved, in a rather dull looking burgundy finish. The scratchplate was broken and it was generally looking rather tatty. After having it knocking about for ages, I decided last year that it needed a bit of a tidy up. I took it to pieces, sanded the body back to the natural wood finish, and gave it a couple of thin coats of varnish. As you can see in one of the pictures, there's some discolouration on the underside of the neck in the usual high-traffic area. There's also a hint of the burgundy still visible in the grain of the wood, but, in my opinion, it's looking much more presentable! I also replaced the scratchplate with one from basschat's "The Bass Doc". The electronics look very simple compared to those of my other basses, but the growly tone that comes from the Blazer is lovely. It's strung with flats, which were new when I sanded the body last year. It's hardly been played since then, so they still sound nice and fresh. I'm not sure what effect the previous butchery of the fretboard might have on the value, but I'm looking for £220 to start with, which I think is reasonably priced compared to the few I've seen for sale lately. I have a soft gig bag which I can throw in, but it's not a padded one so I'd suggest getting something more substantial if you were going to be carrying it around a lot. I would really prefer any potential buyer to come and view the bass and make sure they're completely happy with how I've described it and what they are getting. I'm based in Norwich, but I do travel a bit with work, so I may be able to bring it to you by prior arrangement if I'm going to be in your area. I've got a couple of trips to the Reading and Guildford areas in the next two weeks if that's any help. If there's anything else you'd like to know, please don't hesitate to post or send me a PM, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Here's some pictures... Let's have a bit of a Zoot thread resurrection... Here's my custom 5.
  14. Thanks both!
Welcome - do you make cheese? The other bass player called Alex makes cheese, I like cheese
I'm afraid the other bass playing Alex has this one sewn up - I bring no cheese making talents to the table
  15. Hi all, I've been having a look through the forum this afternoon and thought I'd better join up and say hello... I'm Alex, I live in Norwich. I've been playing bass for about 19 years now, but I'm a little rusty at the moment. Work has been getting in the way of regular playing over the last few years, but I seem to be working fewer evenings and weekends lately, and have been picking up my bass a lot more. The plan is to get out jamming and rehearsing again, maybe gigging as well. Experience and style-wise, I have a very broad taste in music generally, and I've played in various bands over the years. From pub indie/rock/blues covers bands, a metal band for a bit, function bands, and playing in the house band in a few musicals for an amateur theatre group. Whatever the style, I just love a good groove! As for gear, I have a 4 string electro-acoustic Aria which is always ready to pick up and play if I need to work out a bassline. Then I have a Hohner B2A and a ratty old Ibanez fretless which get occasional use. The main bass though is my Zoot Custom 5 string, which I love to bits. If I'm playing at home, I tend to use a little Peavey Microbass combo, so as not to annoy the neighbours too much. For louder stuff, I have a Trace Series 6 GP7 head, with a 1x15 cab. Anyway, I can see myself spending far too much time on here browsing the for sale section when I should be 'working from home', so I'll see you around! Alex
