Why are the La Bella rounds so expensive over here? I've just ordered a custom set direct from La Bella and they came to $13.21, which according to Googles conversion thingy works out at £8.34, a bit better than the £35-40 over here.
Even with the postage it's less than £20, can't remember at what price import charges start but I'll take my chances.

I just ordered a set myself after finding the Ernie Ball 6 string set that most shops advertise as suitable for Bass VI are actually no good for a 6 in line headstock. The La Bellas cost me £15 including shipping and I was able to pick the gauge of every string, can't really argue with that.

  2. I think it's a combination of all the points above, plus I'm pretty sure every Skyline bass goes back through the main US factory for the final QC and a set up. That alone is worh a lot given the rep the U.S. Lakland basses have, although I guess this is less relevant in the used market.

Perhaps it does just come back to the fact that there's a proliferation of US Fenders available in the used market, which drags down the value.

I don`t know much about Jazzes, but both MIA and MIM Precisions from 2008 onwards I`ve found to just feel much nicer to play, particularly the MIMs.

This. I've owned 3 MIM basses with dates ranging from 2004 through to 2014, and played all sorts in between, and while my old Deluxe Active P is a cracking example, the general trend I've noticed is that the newer stuff is better quality.

When it comes to MIM vs MIA all of the above points are valid. I haven't ever been able to justiy the extra expense of the American series because I'm not in a band or gigging, but if you're on the circuit a couple of nights a week it would definitely be a sound investment. Just make sure the differences sound/feel good to you before you decide for sure.

    Especially as you won, Dave.

I promise to bring a different bass if that would help :P

Winning aside, it was a great afternoon- I was able to play basses I didn't think I would ever have the privilege of playing, met some great people and left with one more bass than I came with! How could I not want to repeat that experience?
