I recently fitted a pair of passive EMG Thunderbird pickups in a Warwick Corvette, and find the result a bit blah.

I've been looking for other pickups and came across Gemini pickups, has anyone used their products?

Yes, I’ve used Gemini. I had a Rickenbacker type pickup inside a Thunderbird case. Pretty good and first class service.

  2. This is a little bit special. No longer made Cabronita Precision, in very good condition, just a couple of minor marks/play wear. The pick up has been replaced by a hand wound unit by Jess Loueiro using traditional P bass magnets/wiring, but in the mini humbucker format. It’s had a KiOgon wiring loom & the bridge has been replaced by a grooved vintage style unit. Light weight & well balanced.

So you're a Group B player then! Ha! What basses do you have at the moment, please?

I’m still looking for the holy grail, but ss wise I have the Harley Benton HB-60, Epi de-luxe masterbuilt, Squier Bronco, Rob Allen Mouse, Ibanez SRC60. It’s quite an eclectic bunch!

  4. I’m 6’6” and don’t want a small bass; but I like s.s. because of the “plummy” sound and that they also seem to have good G strings, ie not thin sounding. I also appreciate that with less stretch between frets they are great to play and the notes fall to hand more easily. With shorter length there should be less neck dive (which I dislike) however due to poor design, that’s not always the case. The other bonus is that they often fit across the width of a British cars boot!

Oh well, there you go; when I turn on the radio and it’s Liza, I turn it over! Can’t stand her “delivery”. Horses for courses! 😉

And I’m the same with Zoe Ball, Elaine Paige and Steve Wright! Maybe I’m not keen on Radio 2 after all 🤔

I've left the club - Scott Devine has my bass now! I still think the Smith sound is one of the best and they're some of the most identifiable base out there in terms of sound and looks. IMO the big hitters which are easily identifiable by sound alone are Precision, Jazz, Stingray and Smith.

    And Rickenbacker! 😉

You wouldn't happen to have his contact details would you dear chap?

The name is Jess Loureiro. I originally found the Cabronita pickup on eBay. There’s no contact info on the box, but there may be a web site; I’ll see what I can dig out.

    I weighed my sterling tonight

if I’ve not played it for a while, when I pick it up it feels heavy, but on a strap it’s fine

    so I weighed it, 10lbs 🤪

that’s heavy for a smaller body bass!

    its sounds and plays great

    Tony

Gosh that’s heavy! I think mine was about 8lbs

Ive been looking for one of these, congrats @Basilpea

I couldn't find one, so I opted for the one that marked as sold on Rob's site - walnut with a f hole. I can't wait. I really think these are something special.

Lovely! Be interested to hear your thoughts when you get it.

  10. There was a guy in Spain making hand wound Cabronita pick ups. He used the same magnets and wire as in a standard P but in a Cabronita format. I grabbed one last year for my Squier Cabronita and it dropped right in. It sounds great.
