I would also live without Yellow Submarine, When I'm 64, Piggies and Rocky Racoon. Eleanor Rigsby always been a favourite of mine though.

Yes, I’m basically with you on this, I’d loose oh bla di and yellow submarine but Elenor Rigby is great

Just reviving this thread as I stumbled on it by accident. I have had a 4 string fretted version since they were first released in the UK and I love it. It's light, ergonomic and easy to play. However, the point of this post: the drawback of all piezo based pickup systems in my experience is that they can produce a tizzy, brittle tone at some frequencies: nasal is another way of describing it. I haven't particularly noticed it on the SRH500 to be honest (nothing like as bad as my Taylor 6 string acoustic) but you can make it sound really good by using an acoustic correction pedal like a TC Electronic Bodyrez, or even better a Zoom acoustic pedal like the AC-2, which has a dedicated upright bass voice. Using the AC-2 and some EQ tweaking, I can get a really convincing upright bass sound. Like they say on the BBC: other acoustic pre-amps are available. Obviously, it would sound even more authentic if it were fretless but I am happy with the sound I can get out of it. Incidentally this works pretty well on my Ibanez Affirma bass, which also has the aerosilk piezo pickup system in the bridge.

Interesting about the preamp. I reluctantly sold my 5 string fretted in the end. I do miss it though. I could be tempted by the fretless if I could get a convincing DB tone.

i replaced it with a fretless Spector core which is definitely less nasal, but the piezo doesn’t work with nylon strings or even Labellas, so can’t get the sound I want from that either (although it does sound good).

Not even remotely as it happens - it is a really well balanced thing.  The bridge is well back on the body, the tuners are Hipshot ultralite.

Another great thing is because of the pickup position the tone isn't quite a muddy as the 'mudbucker' and has more bite to it.  I play in a blues/rock trio and it sounds perfect for that.

That’s great, thanks for the info.

The Gibson Les Paul Junior double cutaway reissue bass ticks all your boxes and, for a genwine Gibson, are pretty cheap, too.  AND they smell nice.

Cheers, good idea, but I’d have thought it would be a bit neck heavy?

  5. I fancy an EB0 type bass, but don’t want anything heavy or that neck dives. Does anyone know of a short scale EB0 type bass with the right sound that meets the brief?

    cheers folks

  7. I’ve always really liked the look. I’ve had three of the Squier ones. They work particularly well with pedals I think. The first I played a bit then sold. Then I had a notion of adding a stingray type pre, so I brought a second and added a retrovibe “stinger” - that worked pretty well, but once I’d satisfied my curiosity I sold it on. I still like the look and saw a guy in Spain making replacement pups using p type magnets and wire so I got it and brought a third! Added a KiOgon loom - it’s good! Has a nice focussed sound with the pup being a bit closer to the bridge. I also put a threaded bbot bridge on as the high mass type always seemed out of proportion.

Never seen a MIM Fender one second hand, but would be tempted I found one.

Took it to band practice tonight.

Genuinely stunned how good this thing is!

I didn’t expect it to sound so much better than my other basses.

much more full low end without any boominess.

wish I’d took the plunge sooner!

I’d be interested to know what your other basses are for a bit of context.

I like a Precision, like MM (especially Stingray) but not sure about the shape of these. However the price of some examples look to have dipped. Looks like a great bass, well done on a good find.

Considering the money was technically expended last year, and your hand has somewhat been forced by external parties, I would probably consider this a yellow-card offence only.
    As you were ;)

    Si

Thank you kind sir; I’ll consider myself yellow carded and try and do better in future. Now where’s that hair shirt, I had it here a minute ago. 🤔

  10. Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. I confess I may have fallen off the wagon and state my case for your collective judgment.

Last December I returned a bass in exchange for a less expensive one (Fender professional Jazz/Fender deluxe Jazz). I was given gift vouchers for the difference in price, but have to use them within 4 months or loose them. So I spent a chunk on a line 6 G30.

Can this be classed as a purchase from last year as no new monies have been spent?

I just thought it was cool that a guitar hero like Nuno would be happy to play the bass.  I did see that Stu Hamm came on stage after but I didn’t watch the full video

And why wouldn’t he be happy to play bass?

IMHO I thought both the guitar playing and bass were dated and unoriginal and in the case of the guitar; overly self indulgent. Yep, not really my cup of tea, but each to their own. 😉

    I'm out.

Just negotiating a GK MB200 that i can use for rehearsals. Trying to cut down on gear that i take, and I found that as long as i dont take my Helix (which i dont need to) i can get everything, inc my MB800 in to my Bass gig bag. It's a very tight squeeze though so hopefully the MB200 will be more suited.

Good luck to those that haven't cracked yet.

I’m hanging on by a thread. If I can get through the current bought of GAS without cracking, I should be ok for a week or two! 🥴
