Couple of years back I changed the stock neck on my MIM Jazz fretless for a Status Graphite fretless. Very stable and could handle the small relief much better - didn't move at all in the year or so that I had it. The tone did change a bit - bit more trebly even with flats but not un-nice. One thing I would suggest if you went down this route is having it fitted at Status. I was lucky and had two MIM Jazzes - it only fitted one of them! I would have had to do some pocket work on one of them (plus a shim) as it wanted to fit at a slight angle. It was perfect in the 2001, not in the 1996.

  2.
My opinion would be that there is really no need to spend anywhere near £1500 to get a really excellent bass.

Half that should suffice, leaving you the option of two basses, a bass and amp setup, or just some money ;-)

Seriously though, ask yourself this, would even a £500 bass actually hold your playing, and your music back?
+1
If you feel the need to go this much then its a custom with pretty woods or a vintage that will hold (investment) value. One of these would be lost on me - I'd be scared of using it, every ding would cost about £100. IMHO £7-800 will buy a good bass that shouldn't hold anyones playing back.

  3. I've had 2 Warwicks, a Corvette, and currently a BO Thumb4. I a-b'd the Thumb BO and NT. I'd have to say that if I'd had the extra cash I probably would have gone for the NT but that was because I thought the 3 band EQ was better than the 2 band on the BO not because of the neck or neck profile, sustain what have yer.

  4. Just bought my first fiver - Lakky DJ5. Jury's still out after 26 years on 4's but it's so damn pretty I've got to give it a go. Know what you mean about the left hand-right hand thing. I'm ok until I start to think about it :) Great for Lizzy stuff with the eflat thing - unfortunately don't think I will be able to convince the guit**ist to detune!

  5. Know where you're coming from. Currently back to 3 and somehow it doesn't feel right.

Main Gigger - a 2004 MIA black Precision. This just feels right and does what it says on the tin.

Change/Jamming Bass - a 2006 Warwick Thumb BO4. Nice set of sounds and it's own distinctive voice, cuts through the crappest of Jam night set ups.

The new one - a 2007 Lakky DJ5 Skyline. Fancied a go at a 5 string. I can see this getting left at home and coming out for the odd noodle. Probably some time down the line after it's gathered an inch of dust it will be sold on this fair forum.

  6. Been playing for longer than I care to remember - always on 4's. Always said I wouldn't go to 5. Recently ended up at a Jam night and the only bass available was a 5 - I made a pigs ear of many many songs. So......after umming and ahhing today I've finally picked up a 5er to see if the old brain can get around the change. We shall see. If this little flirtation doesn't work out there will be a brand new DJ5 in black sparkle in the for sale section.

  7.
LOL :) The 'Modulus Beedster 4' doesn't have quite the same cache really does it, but thanks anyway!
Re modern MIA Precisions, I'm right with you. My MIJs have always been better (and half the price if buying used). I've just put together a bitsa Precision (also for sale on here) for about £300, and it knocks the socks off anything Precisionny that's come out of Corona for a while (having said that, the SD QPs and Badass certainly help). Given that the QC at Fender in the 70's was reputed to be so bad, and given that '70s Precisions can be thunerously awesome, I wonder whether Precisions just get better with age? Perhaps instruments that seems a little lacking in something today might, in 15 years, be real good 'uns?
    Cheers

Chris, OTPJ, I would have been right with you on this one if I hadn't bought a MIA 2004 P off Old Horse.. Just about as good as any P I've ever played including a '82 JV that I have particularly fond memories of. Perhaps there's still some variation in Corona?
