Saw Mo Foster and Lee Sklar who I thought were both great...
I saw Mo Foster as well, very much enjoyed it despite Mrs C's assertation "he's much better than you"...
Maybe it's a bit like having wonderful sex with a woman you thought wasn't very attractive - once you've experienced it you have to keep going back for more
Is this more likely to happen to me if I buy a Fodera? If so I'm in....

Fretless wanted. Will be my 1st fretless - advice appreciated
Yep, just got one of these from this parish - plays lovely and I suspect, when I get into rehearsals, will have plenty of presence.
I've always liked them as instruments. Look good, feel good and sound good. Can sometimes weight more than Eric Pickles but at the price, I think they represent a good choice. -
OMG, I realise that I now have Fodera GAS
I go through periods of thinking I'd quite like one... Then I see something like the single cut they had on the bass gear stand at the weekend and I come to my senses. God that thing was ugly, looked like an expensive ironing board with strings.

Oh no we haven't entered something serious have we? No other nation is ever going to vote for us as they all hate us... The only nation that would get less votes than us is America if they were part of europe and they entered... We're better off putting something ridiculous in and making a a joke of it. Taking it seriously is embarrasing.

Try a Westone Thunder fretless... cheap as chips, does the job -
Big rigs look cool, and give you extra headroom, what's not to like?
I think they are kinda cool if your playing a stadium... both cabs would make me look like a bit of a wally in some of the dives my current band are likely to be gigging...
...and I don't feel the need to blitz people on facebook with me with various name players, which seems to be this year's trend.
I didn't know who any of the name players were...
2 x 212;s probably sound great on a stadium tour but really is overkill for anything else. I'd sell 1 of the 212's and get a 112 to replace it. IMO there's no point in selling a 212 and replacing it with 2 112's. I have a 212 and 112 which I can run seperately or together and I haven't played a stadium in decades.
I hadn't thought of combining a 212 and a 112... Chances of me playing a stadium are very slim...
Yes, 2 of those 212's must be VERY loud I use one and have never run out of volume with it, even in a park outdoors with not going through the PA it's done the bizz.
It's VERY loud... but louder than I will ever need
-
Whilst it seemed seemed like a good idea at the time, buying stuff in the Genz blowout means I now have a ridiculous rig that would allow me to play Wembley without PA support... 1200 watts is frankly ridiculous... Think I should downsize and get a pair of 112s. Not that there is anything wrong with the NXT-212s, they are the best sounding cab I've ever had... but might be overkill for my needs.
.... or will this always happen to me and I am doomed to GAS, and buy basses on the forums forever?
That was out of your hands the moment you signed up to BC...

I just can't get on with the aesthetics of a P pick up... Oddly enough I think they look fine on a P bass but I just think PJ basses look awful...
I was having a discussion with Bernie Goodfellow about the noise thing. We were lamenting the lack of common-or-garden groove playing in favour of gratuitous slapfests at these kind of shows, and Bernie, being a bit of a veteran of these kinds of shows, told me that not only does the groovy stuff not really get heard above everything else, but also many of the more casual visitors don't really want to hear the simple stuff, they want to hear the slapfest! Despite being desperately unfashionable, I guess people still like to hear it when done well. I do like a good bit of slap myself, but why does everyone who purports to play slap only play in Em7?
There was a fair bit of slap coming from his stall... to be fair it sounded huge through that EBS rig he had on the go. Also, Mo Foster should have stuck to the finger style stuff which sounded great and not tried that slap tune which sounded pants...
...but the main show stalwarts of Promenade Music, Bass Gear and Bass Direct have showrooms where it is far better to go and try out their basses in a sane environment.
I was going to try out the Vanderkley 112s as I'm debating getting a pair. However I could barely speak to the guy on the stand let alone hear anything through the rig. The gallery have a pair comming in a months time, I'll go down there and try them out in a controlled environment with my own bass and amp head....

The thing is... If it's going to carry on with the same formula as this year I'm not sure it's worth saving...

Tonight @ The Soundhouse, Colchester - Friday Night Blues Jam
CamdenRob replied to Lee Carter's topic in Gigs
That was way back when I was first drinking, so 90/91 I suppose. Used to be called the Oliver Twist and was owned by the same guy that owned Molly Malones. Kev bought it and ripped out the 'old' pub feel and turned it into the Twist Venue. First gig I ever played was there when I was 14...many years ago.
Molly Malones.... That was another one. Wasn't the basement a seperate venue? Fagin's Den or something it was called (would tie in with the Oliver Twist thing I guess)... the ceiling was about 5 foot 6 I was 14 as well when we first played there. Thing about the Twist was that it had a decent sound and a base crowd that were there regardless of the bands... When the guy took it over and called it the soundhouse (Neil?) was about when the new licencing laws came in... the death knell was opening till 2am on week nights and still only having three bands... Sending the headline band on at 1am on a Tuesday was never going to be a sustainable plan. Shame, I had some great times there. -
It still is, the Soundhouse was the old stable block on the back of The Bull. It was converted into a venue about 3 years ago. Good set-up there now, covers bands in the main bar for the Friday/Saturday night party crowd and then the more isoteric stuff in The Soundhouse. Yep, The Twist used to be a great venue, even better when the bar was in the middle of the pub :-) never got used to singing round a bloody great pole though! The Jam went fantastically well thanks, we have some great blues players in the area and I'm blessed to have them come and play at my little Jam. I'll post some vids of the night up once I have them.
I don't remember it with the bar in the middle when was that?... It was always on the left looking out from the stage when I played there, guess the first time must have been 95/96. Used to be so easy to get a gig at the Twist as a new band, then move on to the Arts Centre once you had a bit of a following. Good music scene in Colchester back when I lived there. Glad the Jam went well, I'm occasionally back around that neck of the woods visiting family etc, I'll drop by the Bull next time -
The main guy is Beaver Felton
Quality name that...
Ahh Different Soundhouse, this one is attached to The Bull. The Twist has now been turned into offices...many tried to keep it going and many failed.
Ah I see... didn't the place next to the bull used to be a chinese takeout? Fond memories of the Twist in the 90's when Kev had it, I used to play there as a teenager and every penny of the money from the door went to the bands. No selling tickets nonsense, straight up fair deal. Hope your jam went well Friday -
Bit disapointed if truth be told... Was alright, better than sitting in front of the telly all afternoon but left me a bit cold really. I was imagining it to be much bigger than it was with more basses from each exhibitor. Liked the look of the Eve basses, never seen those before and whoever bought that buckeye 4 string on the ACG stand is a lucky man. Tried out the Roscoe sixer on the Bass Direct stand, very nearly bought it. Sounded fantastic and was the lightest bass I've ever played. Didn't go for it in the end as I would have liked to give it a workout at decent volume before spending that kind of cash on a bass... Having said that, the bloke on the stalls "affable, customer focused" personality kept me and Mrs C entertained for a good twenty minutes or so... Enyoyed Mo Fosters jam thing, that was quite fun.... Not sure I'll be attending next year unless it's a much bigger affair. Couldn't get anywhere near Yolanda Charles for the hoards of middle aged men taking photos, she sounded really good though.... better than the girl on the musicman stall playing the same riff for hours on end... All in all... Not great.
