With a friend of mine, we sent a high value (declared and insured) bass to the U.K. from Luxembourg on the 8th of January, which cleared the local customs on the very next day as all the paperwork was perfectly filled and only went out of the U.K. customs on the 18th of January. The parcel has arrived today at the local facility, so it should be delivered tomorrow.

Now let's wait for the total fee amount for the import thing...

I'd be interested in having a clear idea on taxes both ways as well.
I have read a few threads, but am stil not sure on second hand goods.

    There is this, though :

2.2 Paying taxes on goods sent to you

    [...]

These taxes must still be paid if:

    • you purchase the goods or receive them as a gift
    • the goods are new or used (including antiques)
    • [...]

I have bought and sold a few basses and gear on here - enjoying the language courses in the meantime - and added VAT on imports both ways would probably mean a bargain won't be a bargain anymore. 20% is a lot.

  2. I am due to receive one of these parcels.

This was a purely investigative purchase, with (almost) no GAS involved 🙄

Did you have the possibility to mention whether it was second hand goods, or a gift ?

I struggle to imagine they would charge VAT on a gift, or charge extra taxes in case of a trade with no cash involved.

  3. This rings a bell.
I have 2 young kids now and I grew up with - among many other styles - early Metallica riffs & breaks,  90s Prong, and little bit of Godflesh.
The synth drum kits can be charming.

I'd get the bass higher in the mix, though :)

Update by Jan 1st: Buyer‘s from within UK should be aware that for imports from EU to UK since Jan 1st the UK VAT will be applicable. This VAT has to be paid by the UK buyer once the goods are crossing the borders. Note: As a private seller in EU I can not reduce the price for second hand goods as VAT has never been included in the price.

Are you sure this applies to second hand goods and private sales ?
If so, this is a real issue.

All I could find - after a quick search - is the following :

  5. I had the Bassbase 400 for years, loved it but it could have done with a little more power sometimes (not that often).
High quality gear, and you can experiment new tones  with an easy swap of the the 12AX7 preamp tube.

I have sold it to buy a good class D, that I have eventually just traded for a big transformer amp.
Same old story... Otherwise I would have bought this in a wink.

This is a real bargain !

  6. Thanks again for the tip @Matt P, I have just replaced the overdrive tube with the preamp tube and it now works perfectly fine !

The covers simply needed a small push down and rotation indeed :)

I have swapped the preamp tube with a new old stock RCA grey plate 12AX7, and the sound is much clearer when the gain is pushed up, you have to push it really high to get a little overdrive.
Some would say it is more hifi.

@Salt on your Bass?, everything is  sorted now and I'm happy with the amp !
I did not have the time to test the former overdrive channel tube, I might do some day.

  7. Hello,

This is a bit of an old topic, I know.
How did the story finish ?

I have just received a Fender TB1200 and the tube overdrive channel does not work, it produces no sound at all when fully balanced to the overdrive channel.

(the other channel is a killer, apart from that)

This must be the tube that is either dead or has moved during the shipment.

I have already changed 12AX7 tubes in other amps without any problem, but I have to say that there are some metal protections screwed above the tubes and in view of the masssive transformer I do not dare touch the metal pieces in there :

I am not even sure what screwdriver I shoud use

And there is one side without a screw, but some resistor underneath :

Any advice would be welcome !

  8. Hello,

This is a lovely bass and a very good price as well.
Unfortunately, the SR necks are too thin for me.

I'm afraid this was not made in Japan, but in Korea, as printed on the back of the headstock if you zoom in.

Nothing negative here, I have an Epiphone Ripper, made in Korea and all maple as well, and the quality is really astonishing, especially in view of the price.

I have my green Overwater Jazz for sale at the moment - not because it isn't a great bass, if anything the opposite - it plays fantastic with a huge usable tonal package. The reason for sale is that I, like many others here, have too many basses most of which don't get used.

After selling it several years ago I suffered with Sellers Remorse, when the buyer, @claustra, put it back up for sale I snapped it up, but it has pretty much lived in it's case since. If you look at my for sale thread you'll see that he even reconsidered buying it back again.

When I put it up for sale again, the original owner/ commissioner of the bass got in contact committing to buy it back once they'd sold their current bass. Several weeks later they got in contact to say, despite really wanting the bass back, they were now in the market for a 5/6 string bass, and pulled out.

So nobody who has owned the Overwater has been disappointed by it - if I was using it regularly I'd definitely keep it - cos I'm not, I'm giving somebody else the opportunity to put it to good use.

It's as good as any of the many other "Super Jazzes" out there, it'll do everything you ask of it - super punchy, super build quality and plays like a dream.

I often question why they're not held it more esteem.

@TheGreek, this bass is fantastic indeed, and I've had a great time playing with it for a few years. It is far more than a J, does a lot of things and responds to your playing really well. You can feel the care that was involved in the making of the instrument.

If I hadn't had a second child in between and a luthier built P, and no more serious porject, and a few spare quids, I'd have had it back.

  10. I confirm this is a fantastic instrument.

The figured wood of the fretboard is a genuine hypnotist, and the colour over the slightly darkened grain of the ash is gorgeous.

The neck is just right, not too thin, unlike on most jazz basses (i.m.o.), and the electronics provide a VERY wide array of tones. Set the EQ to noon and you get the passive tone.

I would definitely buy it again back from you if I had not had a luthier project delivered (same woods, same tuners, same bridge... wonder why...)
