I'm a big Primus/Claypool fan-have been since I started playing. The vibrato in the video was done via a Kahler Tremolo. I've never seen him use a Geddy Lee jazz-i've seen him use a couple of '70's jazz basses though-maybe that's the confusion. As far as Claypool doing covers, both Primus have released 2 collections of covers-Miscellaneous Debris EP and Rhinoplasty. A studio version of The Awakening was on the Album-Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel presents:Highball with the Devil.
I really dig their version of The Meters' Sissy Strut - fretless wobble a go go...
I took the time to check the other YT songs by Shri and I was really floored by them... shows that he knows how to groove and play in a band situation too. His playing with a bow on the fretless works great too and the whole tabla-atmosphere appeals to me a lot. Great band and this band is for me certainly a revelation (more than Primus which I always thought to be sloppy and harmonically poor)
+1 OK guys I think listening to Shri's slap thing on it's own doesn't really give you an idea of the whole breadth of what he can do - i.e. play tabla and flute incredibly well too - so the point of this slap solo is playing tabla rhythms on the bass. It's a set piece at his gigs and really does sound great live - while the patterns may sound a bit random they are proper Indian rhythms and are riduculously hard to play. Sorry if I sounded disissive of Claypool - I was a huge fan for years and years and learnt a ton of this stuff in the early 90s but actually find him a bit uninspiring today - which is just me - anyway just wanted to defend mr Shri a bit because that clip doesn't really do justice to his overall musicianship - his band is great live but I guess that slappy-wappy stuff has probably already put some of you off. Oh well Mike PS not sure where the ego is in this clip but it sounds like music to me:

Er, I've been deleted off the list, I was No. 21, no worries I'll be there anyway... Mike

I suggested to Ped that we have a live satellite link-up for you. what do you think? You could do a speech and everything..Play a trans-continental bass solo
We could Skype him in - not sure what the time difference is but it could work - we just need a laptop and some Wifi... Sorry but this guy Shri kicks Claypool's butt - check this mad Indian tabla-bass slap solo: He's from that band Badmarsh and Shri - check them live they're amazing M

Willis again, just the best IMHO current electric jazz fretless player today, here's why: But Michael Manring comes a very, very close second... Bright Size Life Giant Steps I love his solo stuff too but these clips are great to hear him in a more traditional setting, he kills it on Giant Steps too! Mike
I have one of the Mackie Onyx Satellite's, I really like it, very surprised actually. How do you find it?
It's good - the main reason I got it aside from it having the same high quality drivers as a full-size Mackie desk was that I needed something to run my monitors from - it works great - sounds really good and is very quiet and easy to use - plus my trusty Tascam soundcard stopped wrking when I upgraded to an Intel Mac! I'm very happy with the Onyx and it only cost £150 which is great for what it does. M

Hey I'll add my stuff - nothing too fancy but here goes: Apple Intel iMac 24" - with 4GB Ram, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.8 GHz, 800 MHz Logic Studio Pro 8 (will probably upgrade to 9 very soon) BFD 2 Ozone 4 M-Audio Keystation 49e Mackie Onyx Satellite Base Sation Pair of KRK Rokit 6 active monitors Very good Sennheiser Mic (can't find exact serial) Plus Sei basses and Epifani 502 UL Pedals and stuff All that is enough for me for now - obviously I'd love more stuff but it's a good quality set up that is just right for me to compose and record and get really high quality results Cheers Mike
-
Lovely set up Garry - I know PTs is the dogs wotsits but I'm a Logic person (purely because it's for home recoding and not multi-input craziness) but I'm really impressed with the new Pro Tools-esque features in Logic 9 - I'm seriously considering upgrading as I've seen PT in action several time recently and have been mightily impressed with its editing power - but simply can't justify switing over to it from either a music or financial POV - but I believe it's your job right??? Looks like you've gat all the er, bases covered there - nice work fella Mike
Problem solved, had a chat with my luthier and we're going to loosely base the neck dimensions on a Warwick broadneck, which is 55mm at the nut for a 6 string. Out of Interest Mike, does your Sei use a Schaller 2000 Bridge? i was just looking at pics of it on your site.
It's actually a Hipshot/Graph Tech bridge - with piezzo pickups in called a 'Ghost System' - it's pretty wicked actually, Martin suggested it and I love it for some super snappy slap sounds or 'zingy' fingerstyle - have a look here http://www.graphtech.com/products.html?Pro...mp;CurrencyID=2 M

My single cut Sei is both 33" scale and has 18mm spacing - it took a little getting used to after playing a warwick Thumbfor 18 years but I'm used to it now - no reason for you to stick to those measurements if you want it tighter spaced but I like it now, do what you want especially on a custom bass.
It would be hard to argue that Bireli is a copycat. After all, he has had his own musical voice since before he met Jaco. Jaco was not only a mentor to him but also a friend, and to me, this sounds more like paying a great homage. Playing anything remotely like Jaco seems to have gotten a bad name, but thats probably because there are so many crap imitators around. Bireli makes it sound utterly effortless and very classy, unlike the half baked attempts we usually hear.
My point exactly, and the fact he does it so sincerely and with such skill and respect, and joy, is also why Bireli has every right to do this stuff as and when he feels like it, which, as far as I know is very, very rarely. It's not a case of him "not having moved on", like he's desperately out of touch with today's scene, or is lacking ideas of his own, he's having fun playing tribute, with incredible skill, to an old friend.
I thought maybe Urb was after a new pair of trainers Mark Ong
Looks like a cool dude and sadly no, I just bought some new trainers (that my blisters are tellling me aren't broken in yet!!!) - but sadly no this is not the chap I'm talking about - if anyone has a copy of Bassist magazine circa 1990 then I reckon that's the last time I heard of him... seriously it's a mystery.
I think your thread is very good Dan. Except the point above. If customs want to get into your case, they will. So take heed of this story: Double bassist Steve Berry was travelling with his bass and had it stored inside a Stevenson fibre glass case, I've borrowed his case many times and it is enormous, it attracts attention wherever you go, from security especially... Steve put a lock on the case thinking he would be safe not letting anyone open it. Customes took a dim view of this and smashed a hole through the front of the case and inserted a camera to find that it did indeed carry only a double bass, luckily they missed the bass by milimetres but given that Steve has a gorgeous old instrument well in excess of 10K you can imagine his anguish when the case came out with a big hole in it.. My advice, don't lock your case...
Just to add to this that while I took my bass in the cabin no problem - my suitcase was in the hold and for no other reason than peace of mind I had a small padlock keeping the zip shut - and yes they removed the padlock between me checking it in and receiving it at the destination - so I completely agree - don't lock your case.
Still playing, by the looks of it. Hey Folks This has been bugging me for a while now - and I can't find anything anywhere on this guy Mark Ong who was featured in Bassist magazine back in the early 1990s and was probably (to my knowledge) the first guy in the UK to play a 7-string bass, he was a virtuoso player and seemed to be ahead of his time in a lot of ways. I even saw him play live at some guitar show in London. He had a very progressive approach, great sound and was a member of NYJO (National Youth Jazz Orchestra) I even have a CD with him playing with them. I haven't heard anything about him since then, he seems to have disappeared - I hope he's OK obviously - so I just wondered if anyone else has heard of him and if he's still playing. At the time it seemed like he had a bright future ahead of him but it seems like he's vanished from the music scene altogether. Any news or sightings would be appreciated as this is bugging me! Thanks guys. Cheers Mike
Usual Jaco negatives, has it occured to anyone that perhaps Bireli was maybe tipping his hat to Jaco and maybe doing it just because he can, just like when he plays a violin, because he can. What else do you expect a musical genius to play when he picks up a bass or a violin, Alright now and Three Blind Mice?
Don't get me wrong I think Bireli's 'Jaco-inspired' playing is amazing - wish I could make it sound so good and look so damn easy... M
Sounding like Jaco is and always was a fool's errand (even when I was trying it). Yes it's great but it was great because it was fresh and exciting. Now its superficial and tranparent. Birelli should know better. I prefer his playing on The Super Guitar Trio cd http://www.amazon.co.uk/Super-Guitar-Trio-...3349&sr=1-1 PS didn't watch the clip - can't on my work PC.
While I agree with you 100% Bilbo my take on Bireli's JP impression is more of a party piece to be performed once in a blue moon, not as some kind of "look at me, I've copped on Jaco's licks and sound, so I must be good...", seeing as he's primarily known as a guitarist and doesn't exactly need to prove his skills as a bassist. Hadrien Feraud loves what Bireli does on the bass and rates him as a player, I'm sure he can play pretty much whatever he wants too. Just a thought - but I think you're right about 99% of the other Jaco-wannabes out there. Mike
He's been playing since the age of 4 and he was something like 18, 19, 20-ish when he toured with Jaco. Mad or what? His talent is awesome.
Exactly - Bireli was a child prodigy and has always had sick chops - the clip is of him age 13 (albeit on a slighty out of tune guitar) his playing is just crazy - but his Jaco bass stuff is IMHO one of closest most sincere 'impressions' of JP anyone has ever done - and yes he was close to Jaco for many years and obviously absorbed all his phrasing and technique first hand; Cheers M

OK - this isn't my bass (I don't think I could play it) but this is Martin's latest beast - and a true example of just how extraordinarily skilled he and Jon are at making instruments - this is a world-class piece of work and while it's not to my personal taste in terms of practical, everyday bass playing - this really is jaw-droppingly stunning: Wowzer...
