so the singers didn't have the mics knocking their teeth out.

Seen a three piece band in a local about 6 weeks ago. The bass player/ lead singer got exactly that. Both front teeth, very neatly, right out and into a pint of Guinness on the floor. Was vary hard to watch, but he never missed a word and finished the set.

The band I am in was formed in 1979. I am the third bass player. The first one is now the lead guitarist. The second one left and was replaced by me. The others are all original. It's quite scary. They all know what each other is thinking after all that time!

How long have you been their bass player?

  3. O2 ABC was almost completely destroyed due to a fire in the building next door. Saw Black Star Riders there about 14 months ago and I was due to see Uria Heep there in December, also saw The Tubes in the art school before the last fire in 2015. Major loss to all concerned for both buildings and hope both can be re-built or salvaged in some way. How many other great venues have we lost over the years?

I carry one of those cheap plug in testers in my gig bag to check the polarity and if it has an earth, better than any certificate.

Was a recent recall on one brand of those ( I think it was a fluke model? But don’t quote me ) as it caused more risk than it solved. I’m sure the recall notice is in a workshop at work, I’ll try and find it.

Favourite song in our current set is Crazy Train. We all nail it and it always goes down well.

Guitarist in a band I started rehearsing with last year ( hasn’t come to anything yet, lots of talk, but not as much action ) had that second on the list he sent me, first was Ain’t talking ‘bout love.

  6. You’re starting a new band, playing songs you like, not songs you think an audience wants to hear. What’s the guaranteed song on the set list? The one you give your band mates to practice or use to audition potential members?

I asked a good friend last night, known him nearly 40 years, was my best man at my wedding, played with him in a cover’s band and his answer wasn’t what I thought he’d say. He said It Bites, Calling all the Heroes. Great song, love it. I’m a bit simpler with Tom Petty, Running Down a Dream.  What’s yours?

  7. Saw a covers band the other night, the P90’s, in a local pub ( Horse & Jockey ) and the bass player was playing a beautiful  Ovation bass. Using one finger on his right hand for picking and doing it very well. Bass sounded brilliant, venue isn’t much bigger than my living room, but PA was terrible. Great wee band though.

I'm tempted to state the blinking obvious and say Ringo Starr

Apparently, I wasn’t there so can’t corroborate, but at a press conference a journalist was asking Paul McCartney about playing with Ringo, because Ringo was the best drummer in the world. Paul’s response was “Ringo? He’s not even the best drummer in the Beatles!”. Was only later, when I read up on it, that I found out that others had toured and played drums, including McCartney, on some Beatles recordings.

Apparently, offstage he was a real riot. Onstage, he was extremely shy. I think a lot of people think he had eyesight problems because of the dark glasses, but in reality he was hiding behind them.

I thought, my memory isn’t what it was so forgive me if I’m wrong, either McCartney or Harrison had sat on his glasses and broke them? He only had his prescription sunglasses left to go on stage, so wore them so he could at least make out the rest of the band. Once he’d wore them once, he carried on wearing them for the rest of the tour.

Many years ago, I was asked if my band would play the Inland Revenue (UK version of the IRS), fraud squad's, Christmas party.

I had to turn them down.

That would most definitely be 'The wrong crowd' for my then band xD

OMG, I ended up doing the sound for the band who done that gig, inside Centre 1 at East Kilbride...... done the last ever night there too before they closed it. They done a full show, including the blues brothers and I’m sure they got paid cash?

  11. My other guilty pleasure is cars, I have the same amount of basses as I do cars. The difference is, if I sell all my cars I’d get about £100k, if I sold all my basses, I’d get £100. The main difference is the fact the cars cost a lot to keep up, MOT, Insurance, Servicing and maintenance. A guitarist I played with years ago once said “ if it’s not eating any bread, why sell it if you don’t need the money? “. I’ve sold basses I regret and I’ve sold cars I regret. The basses more as I didn’t need to, as it wasn’t costing me anything to keep them, the cars are more justified as they were costing me.

If you need the space or money......... If not, I’d keep what you have. As I’ve found out, now that the kids are all grown up, married and left home ( withe the exception of a 22 year old daughter, but that’s a whole other story ), you’ll want to go back to enjoying playing again.

  12. Of those kits, I think the Premier kit is most suitable, once set up and tuned it should be good enough for your needs.

Played drums ( 35 years ago ) before I started learning bass and I ended up getting roped into into playing drums one night ( 20 years ago ) at a wedding and thought it would be ok as I didn’t know anyone. Sat down for the first song and there was whole table of people from my home town sitting waving to me. I couldn’t stop my right leg from shaking.

  13. Would it be possible to start BPLA ( Bass and Player Licence Authority ) to keep a note of of make, model and serial numbers? Even just a thread here you can post pictures on, as they'll be date stamped, so you can prove when you owned them? Obviously it becomes outdated if people don't keep a track of what the sell, but might be a start point and give others the chance to cross reference any items for sale in Cash Converters.
