I never realised how useful fret markers on the side of the neck were until I played a bass without them. Shortscale too. I sound like Les Dawson playing the piano.
I have a Yamaha fretless; for some reason they seem never to have understood that the dot position needs to change on fretless. I use black tape with Tippex dots on it
