so i'm thinking about getting a new cab, an ashdown ABM 210 to use with my band, so i can have some speakers at home and some at the practice rooms as i usually have to take the bus, and take my head on the bus with me. I'll most likely be using the ABM 210 on it's own, and my question is this. I find my MAG 210 to be a little lacking in bottom end, great for mids/highs, and that's fine when i use it with my MAG 115, but if i want to use the ABM 210 on it's own, will i find a similar lack in bottom end?
IIRC both cabs have the same speakers, with the only difference being the cab's construction (ABM is Plywood rather than MDF) - I would imagine they sound pretty similar, but I havewn't had the chance to AB the 2 types. Would be quite interested to know if there is actually any difference as I'm thinking of getting an Ashdown 4 x 10 to use an extension for my combo, and I'm not sure it's worth spending the extra on an ABM.
All you are saying is you prefer a 4 X10, if that's the case play your bass rig through an original FENDER open backed 4X10 if there is no difference in cab design and no difference in audio dispersion. Restating and repeating personal reference is not a good enough rationale to base your arguments over design or acoustical science, --- some people prefer to vomit on their own clothes, it doesn't help in the science of personal hygiene. You are not helping the discussion on cab design. For a band that does not rely on PA, dispersion from backline is important if you want to get your audio across; part of the problem is that many acts don't care for this - they prefer to have a roar of energy but acoustic dispersion or intelligibility is not important. For a band that relies on PA, dispersion across the stage from backline is important to a point if you aren't monitored otherwise. You will have had this experience at some stage, all you get in the wedges are vocals but you cannot hear the guitarist on stage clearly because guitar is not in the monitor mix, you cannot hear clearly despite the guitarist using a 4X12 as he/she is stage left of you....all you get is low end from the guitar. If your instruments are monitored in the wedges on stage, dispersion is less of a problem. If you and everyone else will use in ear monitoring and a good PA, dispersion is not crucial at all as you technically do not need a cab on stage.
Yes i did say I preffer 4 x 10's - but that wasn't my main point - I was also trying to say that while a vertical array of 10's is scientifically the better option, in a PRACTICAL situation (ie a gig that is large/loud enough to require hefty backline support but not large enough to require PA support) it won't make that much difference - plus it only really becomes a valid point when you try to redesign the guitar amps to have an even dispersion as well (try getting a guitarist away from a 4 x 12!!! That's never going to happen) - and what do you end up with at the end of the day - the sound evenly dispersed equally left to right for each instrument across the whole field of the audience's hearing - surely that f***s up the whole stereo image of the band?

I use Ernie Ball regular slinkies, I like the sound and the feel - I used elixirs for ages and yes they last, but I don't think they sound as good.
. A vertical 4x10's/vertically aligned 2x210 sweet spot is literally twice as wide as that of an 8x10 or stacked 4x10s, making it a win/win rig.
So, you have twice as many people sat in the sweet spot, but it still isn't going to encompass the whole audience is it? not win win - maybe a slightly better solution but not the ultimate - now a cab wither side of the stage would be, but then again that would be a PA wouldn't it (but then again when using PA support where will the sound engineer sit the bass in the stereo mix? not dead centre I'm sure) To be honest I PREFER the sound of a 4 x 10 coupled with a 15 - not based on looks, based on SOUND seriously I am one of the least gear snobby people out there - I could not give a f**k whether my rig is 6' tall and 3" wide or the size of a shoebox as long as it sounds good. - you assume that the bass sound from the amp is some way bad. Yes therre will be differences out front depending on where you stand, but I can't say I have been to a gig and thought, oh that bass sounds off - must be the dispersion of the cab, but I have been to plenty of gigs with bassists using 4 x 10's on there own and been impressed with the bass sound.
-
but then again at some point someone is going to want to add more speakers - in fact it is fairly usual for someone to want to add, say a 15" cab or another 4 x 10 to their rig - a vertical 4 x 10 wouldn't be very modular, which is why I would guess they aren't made - same reason why the majority of cabs are 8ohm as well - people like to mix and match. in my opinion any problems with dispersion aren't really a problem in a band enviroment either - I can't imagine that anyone playing through a decent efficient 4 x 10 driven by a decent amp would ever struggle to make theselves heard in pretty much any practical situation (this has been my experience and I have played with some f**k off loud bands)
What about a vertical 410?
Might be a bit impractical to move? Although it'll only be the same height as an 8 x 10.
One might also conclude that a Ford Focus is the epitome of automobile engineering expertise... if one had only a Yugo to compare it to.
Maybe the OP likes the sound of 4 x 10's - therefore you telling the guy NOT to build one is just a little bit rude. That was my point - I didn't want to get into a discussion on the finer points of speaker design. Yours is an opinion, but is not nescessarily right for everyone. It doesn't matter whether it's a Ford a Yugo, a Ferrari or my mother in law - someone out there will enjoy riding in them.
Don't build a 4x10. It's the poster child for how a speaker cabinet should not be built. Do a pair of 2x10, stack them with the drivers in a vertical line.
But has worked for god knows how many bass players?!! I actually like 4 x 10's as a cabinet, they may not be "correct" but they still sound good!
There's an old Pantera video showing something very similar on the guitar & bass (can't remember which song it's for though).
5 minutes alone
Well I ended up doing a music tech degree at staffs. They have some great equipment and some allright studios, but you basically record 1 band in your 2nd year, and then you can do recording in your 3rd year if it's to do with your final year project. I went to learn about recording and basically just learned how to drug yourself into a whopping overdraft. I've since gained experience recording independently and am making an album with my own gear, but just learning what I now consider the basics of recording and mixing was a tough struggle after 3 whole f*cking years at uni.
That's actually one of the places I was looking at going after I finished my BTEC - unfortunately I got my girlfriend pregnant and had to go get a proper job!!
I was in the same position as you when I was 16. In retrospect, I should have gone to college and done a Btech in recording.
Which is exactly what I did - twice!! (although the first couse I did was 50% performance as well)
Hello all, I'm about to buy a current Corvette Standard ash unlined fretless, but I can not find any info about the side dots! Are the the side dots "on the fret" or between the same as a fretted bass? Thanks as always
I tried one of these out a while ago - I'm pretty sure they were "on the fret" (as they are with most unlined fretless basses)
I recognise those feet I have to admit I was really surprised by this MM. I'd never been a huge fan but this one really seemed very nice indeed. Can't beat a black Ray with a maple board. . .
Thanks Barrie It is a really nice bass - played with a pick it sounds phenomenal (actually it sounds fantastic played fingerstyle and slapped as well)

I'm selling my Musicman Stingray 3EQ - I got it from Molan on here around Christmas time but as much as I love the sound, I'm struggling to get on with it and end up playing my other basses more. This bass is in seriously good condition, with only a couple of minor marks and some very slight buckle rash on the back (but nothing that really even gets through the laquer) The neck is absolutely perfect. It has been modified slightly with the addition of a Hipshot D-Tuner and also the installation of a coil tap - this gives you 2 extremely usable sounds at ther flick of a switch - one is obviously the Stingray as god intended it and the other is more, well like a single coil 3 band Stingray I guess!! I'm not really after trades any more on this a - so it'll be cash only - £700.00 It's probably worth noting I haven't got the original MM case for this, but it comes with a slightly battered but fully serviceable Hiscox Liteflite hard case. I've used Barrie's (Molan's) pics, cos the camera I have at the moment is rubbish (hope he doesn't mind) - but the bass is in pretty much exactly the same condition as when I bought it.
Here ye go. How do you like the new look? I've modded the original body and neck and pimped it out in Surf Green - the only other original parts used are the neck screws. I'm against the decals theoretically but I think there are enough homages to the original Coaster so as not to be pulling the wool over anyones eyes so (although at the end of the day it's probably put together better than any Fender) I thought f*** it why not. I'm getting dragged out to the shops just now but I'll list the changes and hardware later. I'll try and get some better pics up too as the sun's out in Aberdeen again and these are way overexposed and you can't get a right good look at the purty Surf Green. Cheers
Mate, that looks awesome.
You could always give this guy a quick email: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROSEWOOD-THUMB-REST-...2QQcmdZViewItem I've got 2 of his ebony rests and they are very well made indeed, he'll probably knock you up a custom one I suspect.
Thanks mate - just sent the guy an email. Hopefully won't cost too much!!!

I am looking to find a long thumbrest, Kind of something to be similar to the ramps that Tim Commerford and Juan Alderete use but more like the Fender style thumbrests so it can sit above the pickup - (probably needs to be about the distance from the back of the bridge pickup to the front of the neck pickup on a Jazz bass). Reason is, I am really struggling with my right hand on my stingray, as resting my thumb on the pickup causes my hand to cramp up after a short while of playing- I have realised this seems to be because of the realtively small gap from the top of the pickup to the E string, as opposes to the larger gap on my Ibanez and Jazz Basses, both of which I have no problems playing for hours at a time. Add in to which my almost pathalogical desire to play nearer the neck, and I end up 2 options - Sell the bass, which I don't really want to do (I struggled/still struggle a bit with the neck profile on this bass as well, but I like the sound sooooo much I've perservered and am starting to get used to it) or find a solution, which adding a thumbrest seems to be. So what I am looking for HAS to be made out of wood - I intend to countersink screws in to the back of the scratchplate so I can attach it from behind to save drilling holes in the bass - that way all I have to do if I ever to decide to sell is whack on the spare scratchplate I have to get it back to normal again. Anyone know someone who could supply/make something like this for me? also how much is it likely to cost?

So, we took some recording gear down to our rehearshal room this week just to get some live demos of some new songs - the singer chose that day to have a motherf**cker of a sore throat so the vocals are terrible, but they give a rough (and I mean V rough) idea of the songs, so I thought I'd share them. Demo2 is the best one I think, but I do get to play some slap in the middle 8 of pretty green eyes!! (it's not that great though). and yes it is the song by Ultrabeat!!! I apologise in advance!!!
