I had big problems doing this (I guess I still do), but once you know a bass line inside out and don't have to think too hard it gets easier. Playing with a pick I think makes your brain do a lot less work in trying to decipher the difficult coordination as well... if you think about it you're only really moving your hand up and down with a plectrum, where as if you're playing with your fingers it requires a lot more concentration. If you rhythmically complicate your plec technique it gets harder again though!
I do a lot of backing vocals with my band and I find that finger style is easier for me than plectrum work. Might be because I also sing playing an EUB. Got to know the bass part inside out first then concentrate on the vox.

  2.
I've just seen you've got a 80 Ric 4001, how is it? ;)
Ive had it since 81 so Im completely attached to it. It was my only bass up until a couple of years ago. Sounds great and clanky and Ive had the capacitor mod done. Having a bit of a problem with the tone pots which I think are on the way out so unfortunately might have to replace them or even the full harness when Ive got the readies. Piccy on the porn site under Maxcats Litter.

Some nice pedals anyway. In a way I wish I'd got a smaller board. I've sold a bunch recently to pay for a new synth pedal but it means I'm going to have a big empty space staring at me and I'm sure I'm going to be GASsing for delays and pitch shifters and other fun stuff I don't need...
Weird isnt it. I had an annoying space on the board soI decided to fill it with the SMHH. Looked pretty full. Then I got the SYB3 and just squeezed that in when along came the BassIQ but thankfully I swapped out an Exar Pignose I was using. I now feel the need for a Unichorus but Im going to have to lose one to make it fit. Problems problems.

  4. I thank you. Ive seen a few boards on here that are really works of art due to the great use of space. I must have tried a dozen different layouts, but the Bassbone input/outputs screw with them all except for this one. One things for sure. I cant fit anything else on. Thatll please the boss/wife.

  5.
You certainly got as much as you could on to that board! Does it fit in the case?
Yeah Its a tight squeeze and it only fits coz I got the soft case not the flight case. I have to be a bit careful with the DHA controls on the back of the pedal as they stick out a bit. I really should have gone for the PT2 but I didnt expect pedal GAS. In a previous life I was Ric straight to the amp. Thats progress I guess ;)

  6. So the board is finally finished until I cant contain my GAS for an EBS Unichorus ;) Quite pleased with it now although if Id bought a PT2 rather than a Junior then I think Id still be spending.

Still might experiment with this but for now I have

    Bass > DHA VT2 > Bassbone Ch1 > Optostomp > Amp
    EUB > Bassbone CH2
    Loop = OC2 > SYB 3 > BassIQ> PH3 >SMMH
    Tuner Out > Korg Pitchblack

9 Volts powered from a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 and all admirably held together by OBBMs patch leads and power cables.

And now the "should be compulsory" Night Shot

  7.
I'm sure OBBM would make you a better product than you can buy commercially for less money ;)
Already done mate. Dont know why I didnt think of it. Daves done fantastic leads for the rest of my board. Just a dumbass I guess.

  8.
it's not the neck that's the problem... excessive tension would pull the bridge or soundboard off before the neck snapped... or else you would run out of adjustment on the truss rod.

From what I can tell on the web, an acoustic guitar (and by corollary bass) would only really have problems if left in a car out in the sunshine. The excessive heat would then cause the glue between the bridge and top to slacken and the bridge to separate from the top or else the top pulls away from the internal bracing spreaders...

this will happen with normal "as supplied" strings if you leave it in a hot car.

I have no idea where this "Old Wives Tale" has originated from that thou shalt not fit flats to an acoustic bass... apparently, on Basstalk, someone once did it and their bass broke... I personally suspect the bass was left in a hot car and he/she blamed the flatwounds rather than their own stupidity for leaving it in the car.

It's rather amusing, as a lot of posts there tell you to fit flats for a fretless acoustic bass, but not to a fretted acoustic bass as it'll break it... which is daft, as the only difference in construction is the lack of frets and the different fingerboard material, the bridge and soundboard is the same. My bass is available in two different versions, fretted and fretless, the only difference is the lack of frets.

If you're worried about voiding your warranty, well then, wait until the warranty expires before fitting tapewounds.
Thanks everyone including neepheid ;)

  9. I have just got my hands on an Ibanez Artcore AGB 200 bought today from Guitar Works in Reading. Short scale and acoustic enough to practice un amped. I havent been able to spend a lot of time with it but it has a lovely Bluesy grunt to it. Check out the samples on You Tube for the tone and also eye candy. I love it already. Ill post some pics when I can.

  10.
1/2rounds are still available.... Flats sound really nice on an accoustic, just make sure it can deal with the added tension.

I use nylon wound flats on mine which give an 'upright' kinda tone.....
Sorry for being dense. How do you know if it can take the extra tension?

  11. Ive been looking around for a uk seller who stocks the right angled Centre negative 2.1mm x 5.5mm power leads that run from my board supply to the pedals (shown on voodoo lab site). Sent emails to any site that looked valid and have had nothing back. Does anyone know where I can pick these bad boys up from?

    Cheers in advance

  12.
You might not want to seek out Amy LaVere then ..
    To paraphrase from memory
"I was visiting a friend and he had an upright bass. I was singing in bands but I didn't really play anything at that point but I had a go and just found I could play rockabilly slap on it more or less straight away"
    aaaaaaaaaargh
I would still loooooove to seek her out so to speak. I think we had a similar conversation on this very subject OG. Why does she not love me?????

  13. Always to the front left as I sing backing vox at the front. I get the hi hat/snare and kick full on and when I want to get an eye lock/tell him to f***ing count ;) I just drop back. Saying that at the jams we host coz of space and balance I have to set up on the right but Im not as comfortable there.

  14.
Did you see Imelda May on Jools Holland? He DB player Al Gare looked and sounded fantastic on Johnny Got A Boom Boom? Now there's a slapper. Not using a Stagg though, I notice...
Yeah I instantly became a fan. He makes it look so easy but reading his blog he has been doing it for 100 years. Not just a great sound but a great look as well. My band are talking about doing Johnny got a Boom Boom but Im no where near that sound.

  15.
Hi Maxcat, did you try sellotaping bubble wrap to the top end of the pin? Ever since I did that, my rattle has disappeared. I'm also loving the sound now I've wrapped some material round the strings between the bridge and tailpiece to mute the unwanted resonances. I am delighted with my acquisition and would definitely recommend it as an instrument in it's own right.

If by slapping you mean hitting the string downwards against the fingerboard, then I've not tried it so can't really comment. What I have tried is plucking upwards and letting the string vibrate back against the fingerboard and that makes a pleasing sound which sounds a little slap-like.
Hi mate Havent tried the bubble wrapping yet but Ill get round to it before the next gig. Yeah the single slap sounds good tho Im still working on my speed and accuracy but its really the double slap (when you follow the upward pull with a downward hit on the string to bang it off the fingerboard that makes the unwanted clatter. God only knows what it will sound like if I ever get to the dizzy heights of triple slapping!!!! Ill try the endpin fix and see if that helps. Or maybe Ill just watch a film with triple slapping in the title ;)

  16.
Im considering a Stagg EUB for some rockabilly slapping, I can get away with some tonal discrepancies to a degree as it'll be fast and hard thumping, oooh eerr !!! These Stagg EUB's seem to have cheap chinese/generic P.bass machines so fit whatever strings fit, right? My double bass which I use for Rockabilly / Psychobilly is fitted with Eurosonic Ultralites and I reckon these strings I seem to like so much may not fit a Stagg EUB's machines. The string ends seem too big to fit bass guitar machines.......any ideas or advice? W.
Hi mate. I cant help with string change issues coz Ive still got the originals on. But slapping on the Stagg has caused a few issues. Now most of this needs to be taken in the context of I am not a slapper and am by no means an expert on upright anything. However the slap sound that I can get from the Stagg leaves a lot to be desired. It obviously doesnt have the woody percussive sound that
sounds so good on an upright, but also all the other parts of the bass seem to want to join in and the pickup is more than happy to oblige. By that I mean that the end pin rattles like a good un with anything but a mild approach, and the sound just becomes very muddled. That has a lot to do with my fledgling technique but I would advise a trial run before purchasing the beast just for slapping. That aside, its a great bit of kit for the cash as you can tell from all the praiseworthy posts on this thread. Hope I havent stuck my oar in where its not wanted

    Cheers

  17. I dont do a lot of lead vocals nowadays, mainly backing vocals, but I have fronted a few bands in my time in a Phil Lynott stylee (I wish). ;) The only thing that works for me is to know the song inside out on the bass so that I dont have to think about what Im playing, then I can concentrate on the vocals. thats the way I do it anyway. Good luck and practice hard.

  18.
ha ha yeah I couldn't resist ;) bit of a change from the old train spotter's Deltic
There's a japanese manga girl avatar playing a jazz on here somewhere too :P
Could she handle a big red Stagg?
