1. Add your own fills to their established sound. They should want to use your unique input and not just have a clone Also work out the most difficult bass parts and do something special to them. If time is limited in the audition, they will potentially test you by having you play them. Above all just be you. If you fit, you fit. Break something :)

Yeah Might be the flash. It almost looks orange in the pics but is the deep red. Or it could be the subtle mood lighting in my Man Barn. Started out as a shed but I got carried away.

It's hanging from the stand's grabber head using the side prong. The pin does not touch the ground

You need to set the height of the stand so the pin does not touch the floor. That's key so it has no pivot point. If it is resting on the floor and leaning on the stand the high centre of gravity will push it over.

I used this on stage for a normal gig last night - a stage made up of boxes with some movement during lively bits .. It was fine.
And this is mine[attachment=

  4.
I've been playing with my chromatic tuner in the line to check my ear and positioning. That helps.

Gig was fab .. Only played the Stag for three tunes - two folky tunes and These boots as an encore ....
Again the reaction from people was notable and the band have now christened it the totty magnet as it does seem to have that effect ... They're also claiming I'm compensating for something as well as it's very long ..... Fortunately as a bass player I'm too stupid to understand that ...

However a little warning .. I managed to pull the lead out by standing on it so I have to address that problem, preferably by being able to switch my wireless over ...

I have an AB input switch so I just piped it through all my effects and stuff that I normally use for the EBG ... Voodoo Chile intro with fuzz and wah wah came out rather well and, of course, scored very high on the incongruity meter - "folk" band, on bass and on an upright bass at that.. .. :) I like that in a tune ..

I didn't risk playing an entire set dance on the Stagg as that can go on for a long time and I'm not sure the muscles are up to it yet  but a very successful start.

    OG
Congrats mate. Im thinking of a similar set up with a Bassbone to do the switching and the seperate EQ on the Stagg. Untill then, Im going to use an EQ pedal in the chain. and just change the lead over. Do you leave it plugged in and if so is the battery good enough to last?

  5.
Hey Maxcat, can you post a couple more pictures of the stand, especially how it sits near the bottom of the stand. I can't see if you have the end pin extended or not.

    Thanks
No probs mate. cant find my camera tonight but will get on it tomorrow. BTW the end pin is fully extended but just clears the floor by about a cm. Old Git has definitely got this to work perfectly. Cant take credit for the pictures already posted cos they are OGs but Ill take some close ups. Did you get my PM re the tripod stand?

  6.
I have a daytime gig on the 5th and Ash is on my way home..
Might pop in. What do you play? (music wise)
We play a majority of covers with some originals thrown in. A lot of our stuff is unusual to say the least Anything from Velvet underground to L Wainright, Primal Scream to Gloria Gaynor and anything in between. The 5th will be us as house band so we will do a 20 ish minute run from 8.30 then get the jam going and end up with 3 or 4. Would be great to meet you gents. Ill definately bring the Stagg if you promise to be gentle with me. :) Hope to see you there.

  7.
Hi Maxcat

where do you jam in Ash? I used to play at the Lion Brewery. I'd love to come and see the Stagg in action. I have one too, but at the moment it doesn't get to leave the house! (other than for lessons)

    cheers
Hi Rainbass. It is indeed the Lion Brewery every Thursday night. We host every 5th week and our next one is 5th June. I dont tend to bring the Stagg to the jams unless we are hosting cos it probably wont get used. Saying that we could defo sort something out in advance if you fancy a tinkle. The first proper outing for the beast is next Saturday 24th at the Crown and Cushion Haslemere with my band Six Miles Away if youre around. Look forward to meeting you.

  8.
Had my DB lesson ..
My technique's Ok (amazingly), the bass needs its nut lowered a few mm to stop some horrible noises in half an first position (see got the terminology too :)) and the he suggested raising the action to get a better DB sound .. It's not bad as it is, that was just a "could be better" suggestion ...

He bowed it and declared the bridge arc not really enough as he was finding it hard to avoid playing two strings when he "dug in" (or whatever) with the bow. It actually bowed OK apart from that though.

So I covered postioning, playing high and low, using open strings as much as pos, vibrato, holdingt the thing to free up my left hand to move and play rather than support, plucking and bowing...
Not bad in an hour  Had to drag him back from geting me to play two octave scales in the lesson  I'll do that stuff in my own time and go back fo rthat when I'm happier with teh whole instrument..

Cool, I'm heading down the right road.. now I just have to practice it more anand bulid a few callouses ....

Got it's first proper gig with my band tomorrow. Just plannng "These Boots ..." and "Hit the road jack" for the first outing ... May slip in Smoke on the water and Peaches too though
Man you are too rad for a DB. Smoke and Peaches! Im jealous.. Glad the lesson went well. Ill admit I havent done a 2 scale octave in my life. Maybe thats where Im going wrong. Break everything but a string tomoz OG. Let me know how it went.

  9.
I am contemplating on entering the world of EUB. But I was wondering if it was possible to play the Stagg whilst seated in a "conventional" manner across your lap like a normal electric, or can you lower the leg so that it can be played whilst seated? The reason I ask is I've got a disability with my legs and I can't stand for too up long without feeling severe discomfort in my legs.
Can you play the Stagg with a bow too??
Another consideration I was looking at because of the scarcity of the ol' Stagg's was a Dean Pace EUB and I was wondering the same points about this model too, I.E. can it be played seated and with a bow??
Or does anybody know of an EUB around the similar price range that you can suggest that might fill my requirements? Thanks
Hi Wooks. I would say that whilst its not impossible to lay it over your lap, the sheer size, balance point ,neck dimensions along with the scale length (approx 44 inches) would prevent you doing much :) . You can however play it seated on a bar stool or kitchen stool with the bass upright. All you need to do is adjust the end pin to the height you need when sitting. I believe lots of DB players play sitting down. The Dean Pace has a tripod that again you should be able to adjust to the required height and Stagg apparently are R&D ing a similar stand. Give it a try. PS You should be able to bow a Stagg (I dont) but Jakesbass will be able to tell you better than I. I believe that the Pace is not bowable due to the lack of curvature on the fingerboard. Hope this helps.

  10.
I'm going to be brave and gig mine next week. I plan to play "These boots" and possibly "Hit the road jack" .. any other comedy classics that are relatively easy to play on upright?
I'll be using it on for a few tunes only, and then towards the end of the evening in case it's overly popular. No way I could play this thing for more than a couple of tunes at this point. My arms would fall off .... :)
Hi OG. Im just putting the finishing touches to Boots, Cmon everybody (Double Rockabilly slap if you will) , Hound Dog, Folsom Prison Blues and Ring of Fire prior to the first proper gig in 2 weeks. I like the fever idea and also listened to The Pigeon Detectives doing a cover of Duffys Under your spell into the Minder theme on Radio 1. Sounds good so might try it. Best of luck with the gig. Beastie got a lot of attention at its inaugural outing so be prepared to be fighting em off

  11. So thats 3 reds to a black. We are fashion gurus. BeLow, I lowered the action to experiment and found that although you can go pretty low without string rattle, it changed the sound quite dramatically IMO to a slightly muddier sound. Put it back up to where it was and the nice pseudo DB sound came back. Im no expert in piezos or anything else for that matter, but it was noticeably different. Good luck with the beast. Stagg On :)

  12.
Just in case you missed it, I've found my Hurcules GS414B neck grabber stand works for the Stagg on stage (as long as your guitarist doesn't walk into it carrying a cab; Doh!)

Anyway, Mark a Bass Direct (poptart) has them for £20 and has offered to ship it free for BC members .. pm him to get the deal.
Thanks OG. PMd Mark and will call this aft.

  13.
Dalry eh? my stepdad took me to an amateur footie match a wee while back, it was Beith vs Dalry, honestly you'd have thought those two next door towns were seperated by ideology, some of the stuff that was going on was just mental.

Anyway I'm more civilised,I'm from Killie and up to my knees in Ayr blood :)
Ah the diplomatic and cultural nirvana that is the Garnock Valley. On a Saturday night in Dalry its like Beirut without the heavy weapons. China Cross ya bassa.

  14.
There are not many cabs like that and IIRC they can be bi-amped as well. Not sure if that bypasses the crossover but I think it does, designed to be used with something with a crossover and a separate power amp - Peavey were into that big time.

    This might do the job.
Sorry BF Ive got "2 x 10s on the brain. Its a Megabox with 1x15 and 2x8sIt can indeed be bi amped and the Mk VI head has a crossover with hi out and low out tho Ive never used it as I dont really know too much about it. Is it just a case of hooking up the outputs with the bi amp inputs on the cab. (showing my ignorance as norm) Always thought I needed 2 amps to do that. I know Ill do a search on the site like I should have done first off. Cheers for the info

  15.
1.No. I drove a T-max at 2 ohms for years.
2.Not many. Even Peavey dont drive 2 ohm loads now. Used T-max combo maybe? EBS combo's will drive 2 ohms but they are "only" 350 watts and f***ing expensive. You could get a Dr Bass Airhead from Robbie - you can stick any amp in one of them.
3.There is much better gear than what you have - but if you are happy with it why change. You could look at an amp that will give you more power into your cab. Is your cab the one with a 15" ,10" and tweeter?
4.The world is your lobster - I wont tell you what to buy. If you like Peavey then get a new one - they are good VFM.
Thanx for the advice BF. The cab is the 15 and 2 x 10s. The more powerful amp is another way of doing it.

  16. Hi all.At the risk of sounding undecided, Im undecided. Ive just joined a 4 piece country rock blues band playing small to medium size pubs. Had my current rig (Peavey MkVI, Black Widow 1510)for over 17 years so am quite attached to it (more to the Cab than the Head tbh), but I feel that for the bigger venues, Im going to need more power than the 250W@4 Ohms that Im getting. One option that I can do cheap/easy is adding a 210@40hms to up the output to 400W@2Ohms. Never driven the head at 2 before tho that is its minimum.

But. I am quite attracted to having the ability to split the stack by replacing the head with a 400W ish combo allowing me to gig small (combo) or large (full stack). From research the ideal combo would be something like the old Peavey BAM 210 (cant find one) or similar spec. Any ideas??

And finally and this is where the undecided bit comes in. The GK stack sold by Funkyhobbit really gave me GAS (if only it wasnt in Newcastle) so am I limiting my options too much by trying work round my old cab. Should I start fresh and tailor the gear to my needs. Unfortunately funds are not unlimited.

If this makes any sense, any advice, opinions, would be very welcome. I play a Ric 4001 and swap that out with an EUB for a handfull of numbers so 2 seperate switchable input settings would be ideal but not essential. Sorry about the diatribe but to paraphrase
1.Is there a problem with driving a Peavey MK VI at 2Ohms
    2. Can anyone recommend a 400 to 500W combo that will drive @ 2 Ohms
    3. Am I being a luddite by not moving on
    4. If 3 then what do you suggest for my sitch.

As always I bow to your wealth of knowledge.

  17. Hi all. Played the Stagg in public for the first time last night at our Jam in Ash. Went down a treat. All sorts of "Closed my eyes and thought it was an acoustic" type comments" :) so it looks like ive got the sound right at least.Adds another dimension to the band sound and certainly makes for a different dynamic on stage. OG you are right. Chicks dig it large. All in all for limited outlay, a lot of bang for your buck. Re Hercules stands, can I order on line stating Im a BassChatter or is it easier by phone. BTW thanx to poptart for the stand deal in advance. Stagg on mighty warriors.
