Question: My Mrs was recently a bit cheeky to me. Now, as I'm Welsh, technically, I need to know if that was actually a hate crime? Because if yes, I probably need to call the police or something.

That's exactly what happened to be fair. 👍

I’m not sure that being Welsh is a protected characteristic so Mrs R was probably okay.

  2. I bought this earlier in the year as part of a project to add some (simple) synth leads and pads to the 80's songs we cover. I'm not a keyboard player and I knew nothing at the time about subtractive synthesis or how to program a synth. The Gaia seemed the perfect machine to learn on.

The experiment was very  successful and I've since upgraded to a full blown Korg workstation. Much as I like the Gaia, I just don't need it any more so I'm moving  it on.

The Gaia has been around for a good number of years now and it's main strength is the simplicity of use; it's a great way of learning to to create custom sounds. With three independent oscillators, LFOs, filters and envelopes, it's an amazingly flexible synth and I've been able to get pretty close approximations of all the synths from the songs we cover. The 64 factory presets are good, it also has standard GM2 sounds and there are additional sound libraries available from the Roland website.

It's in excellent condition and I have the box, manual and power supply for it. It's pretty  obvious from the box what's in it so I'd prefer not to post. As I travel around quite a bit, please PM me  to see if we can find a convenient meeting place or whether  I can drop it off.Alternatively, it's available for  collection (and a quick try out) from the sunny Lincolnshire coast.

Merry Christmas, everyone… get the sprouts on to boil…

What? I put them on last Tuesday.

I want to be sure they’re cooked through.

Merry Christmas one and all, and a huge thank you to the mods for all their hard work, patience and - I’m sure - restraint over the last twelve months.

God bless us all, every one!

I reflected on that list and on my own history and thought, well, I've no moral authority at all except it wasn't a friend, more a colleague I occasionally had drinks with.

  6. I was there on the 11th.

Took a mate from Liverpool who didn’t care for Zep apart from Stairway.

He got so p*ssed, he fell asleep half way through their set and missed them playing it.

I still have the program upstairs along with the one from 1978 (Genesis)

  7. As mentioned earlier by @Ricky 4000, if the guitar is too loud, I’d be tempted to turn my volume down. I’ve got one of those sound level apps on my phone and last time our guitarist was getting too loud, I started getting progressively quieter until he finally noticed and asked me to turn up. When I pointed out that the volume in the room was still over 120dB with basically just him and the drummer playing and maybe we should look at dropping levels rather than adding more, he finally got the point and wound it back.

If you’re lost in the mix, try changing your EQ a bit rather than adding volume? Boost the mids and cut back the lows and see if that helps.

And if the guitar cuts a solo short, make sure you do the full “glare across and slow head shake” look so it’s clear to anyone watching that it was him that just screwed up.

My previous post may give a hint about band dynamics. I'm the incomer.

The gig is driven by me. My local I.A.M. Motorcycle Group has it's annual dinner and I was asked if we'd play. Otherwise we would probably have carried on as a perennial practice band. I was also hoping that it would lead to more gigs. Instead we're in danger of coming apart at the seams!

    Ooh. Tricky.

I grew up in Kendal (a couple of school years behind  you if you grew up there too) and I know what you mean about the limited options. There used to be a pretty strong folk scene so rather than going back to the Bass Shed, maybe there's scope to find something outside the pub circuit?  Or outside Kendal? There's a very strong musical theatre group in Burneside who may welcome a bass player to sit in the pit?

Whatever happens,  it sounds like you're saddled with the gig so I guess you need to try and make it works best you can.

I'd still have a (quiet) word with the drummer - ask him how he copes with the guitarist going off piste and  can he give you any tips? Ditto the rhythm guy - he must have similar issues so how does he deal with them?

If you can lock  in with the drummer and follow him, you might be able to learn  to work round the guitarist's wilder flights of fancy.

  9. Tricky.

I think I'd have gone by now, The volume thing would be enough for me.

This shouldn't be about just you and the guitarist.

Have you talked to the drummer and Rhythm guitarist about this?

If they're of the same mind as you, why don't you all walk?

Assuming that they've got the same issue, you could all agree that you three will play the song as per the original structure (plus any variations that you've agreed in advance). Then - collectively - tell the guitarist that if he wants to deviate from this "in the moment", he needs to give you all a visual cue of some sort or you will all carry on following the agreed structure and he will sound like a complete idiot.

Then implement and stick to this policy religiously until either he "gets it" or you all walk.

Of course, if they don't see a problem then maybe you need to find a band with a better standard of musicians. There is a difference between being able to play an instrument and being able to make music in a band with other people and it seems that you're the only one seeing that distinction.

    Good luck with it

PS Unless you're certain that the gig won't be a car crash, I'd be gone well before it

  12. First band I was in had a copper as drummer.

He was in a Firearms Response Unit (or whatever they’re called) so spent most of his days driving around with the occasional emergency call out to some incident.

He knew his schedule well in advance and we booked gigs around it.

I’d guess that your drummer may struggle to fit in gigs and practice when she’s doing her initial training but once she’s past that, it should be workable - although having a deep on hand for those last-minute emergencies probably won’t hurt.

Do you really need to strip it? Stripping a poly finish is a bastard. If you're doing a solid colour you could spray over the existing finish. Before you do, fill any dings, flat the surface down nicely and clean with de-natured alcohol before spraying.

Household emulsion probably not ideal. Poly or nitro will work. Poly's easier, nitro's nicer to look at and to touch (but expensive, slightly more difficult to source and it takes longer to do the job).

Yes you may use Halfords' rattle cans. Buy one of those rattle-can handles. They only cost about a fiver, comfortable to use and they give you much more control when 'sweeping' and working round curves.

    spray-grip-pistoolgreep-voor-spuitbus-1.jpg

Not necessarily but it's always a good idea if the new colour's going to be lighter than the old finish. Loose rule: light top colour, light coloured primer / dark top, darker primer.

Use a spray poly primer whether it's a poly top or a nitro top coat. Rule: Nitro over poly, not the other way round. Flat down with progressive grades until its nice and smooth, then clean everywhere including the cavities (use a vacuum cleaner for the inaccessible harness runs). Spray in a room at average temperature. Freezing cold garage not ideal.

When the paint's hard you may wish to overspray with a clear top coat. When that's done, lightly flat it out with very light grade paper then finish with a rotary buffer and Meguiar's anti-scratch polish (it's f__king awesome for getting a mirror finish).

Look up some 'refinishing a guitar' vids on YT and plan your steps in order.

Just the info I needed, thanks.

Given that I’m the least ept person I know, I think even I should be able to manage this.

    Famous last words….

  14. I am planning to strip an old SGC Nanyo bass back to the wood and respray it.

Is there any particular type of paint I should use? Or avoid?

I’m after a metallic finish (Candy Apple Red) with a gold sparkle (I didn’t say this was going to be tasteful). Can I use automotive rattle cans?

I assume I’ll need to use a primer coat? Again, any particular type?

  15. Sold my Tama drum throne to Anth.

DPD managed to screw up both the collection from me and the delivery to him with the result that it arrived two days later than planned.

Anth was patience personified through the whole sorry saga. All in all, a lovely guy to deal with.

    Thanks again, Anth!
