1. One week old Spiro Weichs, on the bass for a few days and off again, windings in absolutely perfect condition. Bargain bargain bargain!
2. Sounds like an amazing plan. I'd need to win the lottery for that. Good choices I think. Edit: great choices IMO
3. Sure thing sir.
4. So sorry to hear about the op: no chance of physio and rehab to get back to playing DB afterwards? This bass plus setup, in this condition is a real bargain, I hope you get a quick sale.
5. Lenzner gut strings G and D spare for me, used for probably 3 months but still loads of life in them and regularly oiled and looked after. £50 posted.
6. Still available.
7. I fear I'm not helping here, but whatever you choose today, and when the DB bug bites you, you will end up trying all of the afore mentioned strings plus many more before you settled on your "holy grail" string.... For a couple of months, then you'll try some more and finally settle on the real "holy grail" string for 6 months.... Then you'll suffer some more as you hear a great bassist sounding divine on a type of string, which you will rush to buy, only to discover you sound crap on it... And this will go round in circles... Your initial resolution to get cheap strings will turn into a twisted vortex whereby you start thinking that £200 for a set of strings is a bargain... Sounds like torture, but it's great fun: you will have a blast!
8. Babies love double basses Owen. For the past 2 years I have been practicing when my daughter is asleep, she never ever stirs. Its great to see how the sound of the bass to her is a comforting thing of normality as it is for music in general. You're gonna have a great time. PS- I played in Shetland in November once: living there at that time of year is not for the faint hearted...
9. On hold
10. One week old. All windings almost perfectly intact (only fitted and taken off the bass once). Cannot possibly go lower than £70
11. You are totally right, it applies to all things as you say, not just playing bass. Be a healthy, serene person, and all things you do will improve as a result. You still need to practice scales though...
12. And Sold, thank you very much for every nice comments and well done to the buyer for getting an excellent bass at an excellent price!
13. Sold pending.
14. Amen to that Beer of the bass...
15. True Bassace...If I had a penny for every time the sound guys made me sound like a tin of biscuits with 4 strings attached on stage, I'd be able to afford Danny Thompson's bass...meanwhile it's only fair to try and get the best possible acoustic tone and hope that the clever people who make mics, pickups and amps will one day be able to allow us to reproduce it on any stage. They are getting much much better all the time: they just have not cracked the affordability element yet...
16. Ok call it £1500 and that's a big bargain. Basically all the upgrades and added benefits come free, and some. Chance to further negotiate on the price are now much slimmer, sorry.
17. I believe that for most of his recordings Danny played Thomastik Spirocore Stark strings. In his DVD he mentions higher action at the nut and hand strength built by many hours of rehearsal. Danny now has his own signature strings you can get via the Bass Centre, reasonably priced quality steel strings, I have used them in the past and liked them. Other than that, a fine old carved bass like his and his unbelievable talent are sure to be contributing factors to his sound. Hope this helps.
18. Price reduction alert: £1600. Would prefer not to let it go on eBay.
19. Forgot to mention: the Duke is currently set up for gut strings so I have had a bridge cut with action around 9mm on the G side. However I have a second bridge which makes the bass go down to a high tension steel strings setup which I used on some recordings a couple of years ago, and let the action go much lower. The second bridge also has quality adjusters and is of course included in the sale.
20. Bargain!
21. Thank you Pete, any query drop me a line. All the best. And you're right Sarah thanks very much.
22.
No problem matey! I had exactly the same questions when I started out so I'm just passing on the information that others gave me.
Brilliant! This is a great place for DB chat, really friendly, informed and impartial advice for players at any level. By the way, what Dave said above is absolute gospel.
23. Hi fellow Basschatters, There have been a lot of enquiries and interest in this bass in the last couple of days, but one issue is common to every single person: you all seem to live in England and the Middle of Scotland is a tad too far to travel. Here's what I think: 1 - a good bass is worth a trip as you know, but... 2 - I realise it's a long trip for some so please, drop me a PM, explain your situation. You'd be surprised how much can be achieved with a bit of flexibility and negotiation on both parts. Of course I want to sell the bass, but I do want it to go to a good home and a happy bassist too, and I think I need to be approachable and flexible to achieve that. PS - still no trades though.... Have a great weekend everyone.
24. Thanks Paddy. I had a right chuckle at your offer: God loves a tryer and all that...
25. What budget? There's a cheap Chinese for sale in the forum now. There is also mine which is a professional instrument specifically built for the genres you mention but it may be too expensive for what you want to spend as a starter. Generally speaking, DBs are like shoes: buy cheap, buy twice.
