On the night of christmas eve, the house of one of the neighbours adjacent to our back yard caught fire and burned out completely. The lady living there (43yo) did not survive the burning.
Later that night, the man of the house - a heroin addict with repetitives episodes of psychosis in the past was arrested by the police in our city center. The man had locked his girlfriend in and burned her. This murder took place 50 meters from here, and we were aware the man was a danger to himself and his environment.
The neighborhood has called police a number of times and he would get 'help' but after a day or two he would always be returned to his home. Now the woman has burned to death and there was nothing we could do to prevent it.
I have not slept since. 2020 is the worst year ever.

It is worth seeking help with that. I think the Police have a "victim support pack" that they give out with pointers to counselling services among other things.
Still... I'd understand if you feel it is too little too late. Let's hope that a successful trial puts this person into custodial treatment.
Some years ago, I remember feeling helpless after I was told that the neighbour in the house behind hung himself in his garage while I was less than twenty feet away in my workshop. Sometimes things happen that leave you feeling utterly powerless.
Best wishes for you and your family.

From my experience it often feels like the system has failed the people it was designed to support. However the front line staff do a great job with the resources available and I'm sure that they too will be feeling your frustration about a needless loss of life.
Sorry it's affecting you too...take advantage of any support that may be available to you.
