1. I've had one in a Passat saloon before. Fortunately, the back seats dropped down and I was able to put the bass in the boot but it had to go in and rest bridge side down - not ideal, but it did the job and I was still able to carry a passenger.
2.
Well I must admit..I thought I could get away without learning scales..I thought that they were just for posh people that use a bow ..
Ummm... no, they are available to everyone. There's some useful stuff on here http://www.studybass.com/ You may be surprised how much you already know
3.
I have the horrible feeling that Im actually going to have to learn scales green maybe.
Surely that's true of any instrument? (OK, apart from anything percussive!) Sounds like the tuning issue has disappeared and there was no strings snapped... great to hear you had fun and that no "mild peril" was encountered
4.
Lol.....must be as old as me
Well, I won't be saying hi to my forties again in this lifetime, thats for sure Now, get that bass tuned up! lol
5.
yup....loads .... seriously..I want a deep thudding bass
Amp will sort that out
think...Restless (one for the older members there ) or Charlie Hightone or Mystery Gang
ermmm.. I'm one of the older one that remember Restless.. in fact I've been to several of their final farewell tours
6. I have a Korg DT-4 tuner. I usually place it on the bridge while tuning and pluck the string closer to the bridge and it usually works for me. Gets more interesting in a noisy venue though! If your strings are new, then I can understand it slipping out of tune - settling into position on the tuning pegs, new string stretch, plus playing it all add to the possibilities. My Innovations took about 2 weeks to get to a point where they'd stay in tune for a whole set.
7. Sounds like you've got a bargain if you've got chance of some lessons and setup on your doorstep. Maybe we have different ideas on what rockabilly is. Carl Perkins is most definitely rockabilly IMHO, and the rockabilly style of playing is the Boom-Chicka-Boom style of slap, as found on just about every early Johnny Cash or Elvis track. Not everything is root/fifth though and any note sequence can be played with any variety of slaps. I think that upright bass is a completey different animal to e-bass. For a start, left hand technique also incorporates holding the upright. errr.. upright (beware tiled floors!) and stopping the darned thing spinning round when whacking it hard. Right hand technique is totally different due to the string orientation, but if slapping, incorporates rhythm and syncopation. I'm interested to know - have you seen a particular double bass player, band, or method you wish to emulate?
8.
youll be telling us next that Sting did the voiceover for the meowmix commercial
Not at all.. everyone knows he did the Pal for Active Life Here ya go.. from Chris Speddings own web site, if you need more proof.. 9.
nooo waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
'Fraid so
10.
Wasn't it Neil Innes with the flying v? All top musicians dont yaknow. edit: ah no, Mike Batt. Innes was the womble basher.
The Flying V man was Chris Spedding.
11. You could, if you haven't already, try putting some masking tape position markers down the side of the fingerboard to help while you get used to the scalelength. That may help with intonation for the short term If Lights out, which is a reasonably quick song if its the Jerry Byrne song I'm thinking of, sounds ok, what songs aren't quite working for you? Are you playing the songs plucking, or slapping?
12. There are tons of fun to be had playing songs out of context. Try Paranoid in a Johnny Cash style.. it works.. Should I Stay or Should I Go works as a rockabilly song... not sure a flowery shirt will work though What sounds awful? The tone? intonation? or is it simply holding the tempo together?
13. How about this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfFBdViZHzk
14. Hope the strings hold out... then, for the practise, I hope your fingers hold out What songs do you have in mind for your practise?
15. Did the new strings arrive, and have they survived this time?
16.
I nearly bought a set of weedwackers..but someone on here warned me off them so I didnt bother in the end.
As i said, I wouldn't recommend them, but as a cheap "it'll keep you going" idea if you didn't get a replacement, thought I'd throw it up there.. oh, why the whisper?
17.
...but surely the strings on it have to be "fit for purpose" ??? I would hope that just tuning them to the right note shouldnt cause them to break...
Not an unreasonable assumption, but it's also very true about the quality of strings fitted. Mine (which was a £1100 bass almost 10 years ago), came with strings that were only really useful for cheesecutting - as my fingertips found out about an hour after I got it home. While I would never be able to recommend garden implements as good things to play, you might be able to get a set of weed whackers for about £20 which would, while being dreadful tonally, would probably be far superior to the standard fit strings.
18. If it is the case that there is a "sharp point" on the nut that is causing too severe a kink, it will be a case of evening it out and smoothing the string path. I'd try and get a new string from the supplier, tell them that you think there is a problem, get a luthier to have a look and estimate the work required. You might then want to fix the bass you've got, or get it replaced under warranty.
19. So when you said about 5mm above the nut, you mean about where the top of your ellipse is on the photo? To me, the G looks to be set very deeply into the nut. Did you notice if the D was the same? Any sharp edges will be damaging to the string as it crosses over (or through!) the nut and/or bridge.
20. It seems strange that the bridge should be pulled forward. The strings should sit in a groove on the bridge with about 33% of the string width resting in the groove and the remainder standing proud. Sometime they drag on the bridge during tuning and can pull it forward. Loosen each string individually and put some graphite into the groove and it should slide through/over more easily. It is probably tilting upwards due to needing a lot of tuning upwards as the strings stretch. Some strings will settle in quickly, others take ages to settle in, depending on string composition (steel, nylon, kevlar, gut). If you are playing slap style already, that will give your strings a good workout, so expect some tuning problems while they get fully bedded in. Last time I put a new set on (Innovations) they took 2 weeks before they held their tuning for a full set.... BTW, if the strings are "stuck" in the groove, wacking the bridge with a mallet won't do a lot for your string's lifespan.....
21. K & K Rockabilly Plus. It's a wing and neck pickup attached to a stereo jack. A stereo cable runs to a small pre-amp from which you can send the blended pickup signal to a single amp or split the signal to two amps/pa channels I've had no trouble at all with mine, but they are a bit fiddly to set up as some adjustments can only be done internally. I've also heard several people commentins about poor battery life on the pre-amp, but mine usually last 6 months, so I'm happy. I've had mine for a good few years and quite a number of new p/ups are available now. If I need a replacement, I'll probably get an Underwood as I've heard few of them now and they put out a nice tone (to my ear anyhow)
22. I've not used either of the two pickups you mentioned to know if they are any good tonally, but for under 40 quid they may be useful backups if and when you decide to upgrade. Clicky pick ups are subjective, I have mine almost turned off as I like a 'natural' click and not having the click overwhelming the notes. Either way, only you will know whether you need one or not.
23. I am currently using Innovation Silver Slaps. Had them on for about 5 years. Slightly lower tension than I prefer but that's nitpicking. I've only replaced one during that time which was caused by the string biting too deeply into the bridge and the winding unravelling. A decent string at a decent price.
24. Congratulations.. welcome to the never ending, and expensive pursuit of sonic happiness
25. Hi, The Neo series cabinets will support the Bi-amp of your RB head. I believe the MBE cabinets are full range only.
